Never had medium format depth of field supremacy better explained, really. Thanks for that. I think the x-t3, which i own and love, was only launched in september 2018, so your time together is probably a year, not two. And your dog is so cute she might increase your subscribers ten fold if she appears more often. Thanks for the great video!
Victor Candia I tried lol!!! I try to explain I the best I can but usually gets a bit confusing cause there’s so many factor to apply. And shit I didn’t realize it’s only been a year!!! I think with my xt2 combined it’d be over two years, possibly what I was thinking. And Sedona says thank you lol 🙏🏽
85mm 1.2 L is gorgeous on the GFX also, autofocus is a mess but manual is so easy with the focus peaking on the Fuji, it's almost faster than using an AF adapter since those hunt so much.
You explained it well. Medium format fuji has an amazing look. Landscape shots are phenomenal too. So much color and detail. I have the xt2 and the image does break down if you push them or crop in much.
Thanks for this... I have the X-T3 and a bunch of lenses, but considering selling it all for the 50R and a lens or two. Heard the 45mm is a killer piece of glass, what is your experience?
how big do you print? the xt3 can print to A2 no problem at fine art quality, for publication/advertising the files are reduced to less than 10 mb, I don't understand why you need 50 mb if you are not shooting billboard or shop window prints at 8 feet tall and a veiwing distance of a couple of yards
Pushing the ISO for action shots/low light shots dont size up well compared to the medium format. So with awesome lighting conditions, yes it print fine.. but half of these gigs rarely have "perfect" lighting. I dont do studio work usually, most of the stuff im booked for is on location and/or involves western action type stuff
Thank you so much for this. I would like to know if the images at the beginning of the video was made with both gfx and xt3 or just the gfx only? Man I would pay to learn from you. Thanks again!!!
Haha I love your explanation with your hand in front of your face. Made a lot more sense than all the overly technical explanations out there. I have an XT4 in front of me now and the GFX50R arrives today (rental) to see if I want to go down that route. Thanks for the video.
@@CaseySchneider I kept both plus an xpro3. The GFX50R files are fantastic but it can’t replace the XT4 for faster shooting or video. The XPro3 was just so nice to handle that I indulged and got one too.
I think you nailed it. The Fuji x series glass is excellent and well regarded by all the reviews I have seen, but the GFX series lenses bring it to the next level. The 250 f4 is a spectacularly good lens, but it does cost a pretty penny. There are sales, and sometimes you can find a demo unit. I think there is a sale going on right now. I would not trade my 50R for anything else out there at the moment. The 100 is certainly calling to me, but for my needs, it is overkill and not a terribly compact package. Of course it was never intended to be that. For your needs, maybe you can justify the jump in price because you could use the extra speed, but if you can live with the speed of the 50R for a while, it is perhaps the best bang for the buck in image quality. Great comparison review, and a very practical explanation of the "look" of the larger sensor format vs the smaller ones. You may also notice a smoother transition from sharp to blurry in the focus fall-off, especially vs the Canon glass. I think this is mostly due to the lens quality. Sonder Creative did a really nice comparison between the Canon 85 and the Fuji 110 f2, his video showed a much more abrupt and less pleasing focus fall-off with the Canon lens. If you want to experiment with a different color palette, try the Classic Chrome and set the Color Chrome setting to high. I find that it works really well for colors in shadow or lower light settings. It probably won't be what you want for a commercial customer, but you can always do the conversion after the fact on a RAW file and ask the Art Director if they like it. For your use, don't try it on the in-camera jpegs on one of your paid jobs, because it will slow the camera down alot! My needs do not involve speed, so I have no problem with that. Good luck and enjoy! EDIT: I just went to your Instagram, it looks like you already tried some of the Classic Chrome! I could be wrong, but I would guess that the mckennamobley shot was processed with that, or you just have great taste. :) You really are killing it with the GFX!
Your theory with the hand might look weird but it's 100% correct. Yes high ISO values might look better on the GFX cameras, for your line of work, but for a say reporter that's still perfectly usable. Like for the dog! 😁
Thank you for taking the time to record this video, it answers a lot of questions I'd had. I've been curious how you were finding the user experience on the 50S/R. There are reviews out there on youtube but there is a huge difference between a camera reviewer going out for a few days, with a rental, having fun and a professional photographer going out and having to use the gear for work and get results day in, day out. As far as feedback goes even on social media like instagram I personally can clearly see the difference in image quality with GFX cameras. You've been posting some stunning images on there. There is a progression image quality/fidelity wise from Canon 6d to X-T3 to the GFX (and I'm mostly a canon user saying that).
Daniel Russell dude that you so much 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽 I always think that’s the biggest sign of having the right gear that works for you, is when people start saying things like “your recent work has been amazing!” After switching to a new camera lol!! Granted I am a selfish artist so I would liked the camera regardless. But comments like this means a lot to me when some can break it down to the truths, so thank you brother 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
@@cammackey And thank you both for your comment and for making the videos. I feel like I've learned a lot in the last 9, 10 months or so. Sadly we don't have your desert landscapes in England but we do have are own. I think you'd like Dungeness/Romney Marsh.
Ken, you have probably never have owned a Leica Monochrome if you are so enthusiastic about it. I did (M246) and I was happy to get rid of it. Take a look at all the photos made out of this camera. No one is made on a sunny day with a lot of contrast because you are simply not in the position to control the highlights. It’s a bad weather/ low light camera and you need definitely a second one for all other situations
Jean Lambert Lightroom is just bad overall lol. In capture one you can push photos way further without losing clarity. It’s more when you start retouching or doing mroe fancy stuff on it
i've never given any thought about medium format cameras.. after this its stuck in my head... damn you... just when i was to save some money.. now i have to spend it :D

Awww....man! I was hoping you would wait for the G2 of the 50r/50s because you know they’re going to put all that crazy AF stuff from the GFX100 in there...those cameras are going to be so CRAZY for photo and video!!
Since the universal standard is 35mm format, everyone tends to speak of crop factors from that point. With that said, the crop factor would be .8 coming from 35mm format.
Great video! I think the reason why Medium Format looks "3D" is that you get the compression of a 110mm lens with the field of view of a ~50mm lens (on a full-frame camera)
XT3 paired with a good lens is totally fine up to A2 prints. Even a GFX won't give you a better looking print when printed up to A2. Saying the XT3 image output is just good enough for social media is totally wrong.
Miljo 214 misunderstood me. I was saying for commercial brands, cropped and sometimes even full frame, is not enough. Specially when you’re competing with other photographers to get the bigger gigs. It more or so for the MP count. If you tell a brand you have a 24mp option.. and the next guy has a 50mp+ option... they’re going to go with the 50mp.
And agreed with the good lens pair up! I’ve tried all the F2 lenses and they’re all great, but the faster lenses definitely bring out the magic of the x series cameras
@@cammackey Oh ok, different story when it comes to commercial use. Talking private use and not printing wall-size with it, the XT3 is a very capable camera. ✌🏻
Miljo 214 insanely capable. Honestly the most underaged cameras rn. We’ve just been so influenced with social media and everyone shoving full frame down our throats lol. When in reality there’s not that big of a difference. Only difference to me is the focal depth. And then you could debate that focal depth is overrated lol. But with medium format, it’s a different ball game. There’s a bigger difference between medium format and full frame vs full frame and crop sensor. Being able to keep the “3D effect” without the crazy bokeh.
@@cammackey agree! As I mainly shoot landscapes I have less problems with getting everything sharp with my Xt3 and benefit from larger DOF. Could sometimes be a problem with the GFX unless you do focus stacking.
So, technical explanation was terrible. But your enthusiasm and images made this a TOTALLY OUTSTANDING VID. You really captured the heart of the issues. Personally I think the 50S is a more useful camera. Sure it’s a bit heavier but with the rotating adaptor you can shot from any angle in blazing sunlight. If I was a fashion commercial photog I’d go for the 100S. Just mortgage your first born and don’t look back. Again, GREAT vibe. You captured it‼️
That was actually the best explanation of DOF difference in MF and cropped.
Eye opening!
