    I don’t like snakes. But it’s pretty interesting to learn about them.

    In case you didn't know it, these things can be lightning fast; when, they want to be. If you got bit, screwing around with him; we, of course, are supposed top feel sorry for you. Those things are DEADLY. I saw a much bigger one in Florida, years ago. I observed him, said hello and left him. What you should have done.. You're lucky... He gave you a pass...

    Gorgeous specimen! ILove's comment is correct for North American coral snakes, but NOT for the Central & South American species, some of which have red and black rings touching. Coral Snakes normally are very secretive, shy and retiring, usually found hiding under something. They rarely bite unless grabbed, handled roughly or startled. This does NOT mean, however, that one should free-handle a Coral Snake . Although they have short erectile fangs, like other Elapids (e.g., Cobras, Mambas) they have very potent neurotic venom. Bottom line: Admire its beauty, but leave it alone!

    Beautiful snake. Amazing how docile he was. I think I mentioned in another of your videos that I have encountered several here in Louisiana and the speed at which they traveled and disappeared under the pine straw was stunning. I kicked back the straw and they were long gone. One was huge for a coral snake.... probably 3 feet long and close to 2" in diameter. Your confidence is impressive.

    The color pattern rule only applies to North America. I think down in Central and South America red can touch black and it still could be a coral snake.Also do we know for a fact is the most venomous snake in North America? I’ve heard the Mojave rattlesnake might be the most venomous or even the Eastern diamondback.

    You are smart to wear gloves. I read where their neck is actually deceptively muscular and strong and they can strike quickly and they do not need to chew to envenomate you. Yes you are accurate about venom not having the necrotic agents of the vipers but allegedly there is not much antivenom currently being made because it is too expensive too make . They have Crofab for the Rattlesnake bites and others for Cottonmouth and Copperhead but currently scarce and sometimes outdated anti-venom for Coral Snakes .

    i have seen two of them , in my hometown in central florida . i saw one climb into a hole on a cinder block wall , i guess it was nesting in the block , and another time i was at a friends property that was dense semi jungle and i was sitting at a table eating lunch and i looked up and there was one less than two feet away coming over the edge of the table , there was junk next to the table it had climbed up to get onto the table . my heart skipped a beat because i could have gotten bit by it and people usually die when bitten by one of them

      @BobHansler  8 лет назад +1

      +CncObsession I've found a few little guys here and there, made a bracelet from one that had been partially run over... This one is definitely on the larger side. I dont believe the coral snake opens its mouth or protrudes its fangs as many of the other vipers do. He had enough of me either way, it was time to let him go on his way.

    • @CncObsession
      @CncObsession 8 лет назад +1

      That is the way I understood their mouths to be too.
      For some reason it gave me a much more comfortable feeling that somehow their bite wasnt as instant. Like you would have time to react after the bite. I am sure in reality what it means is that the toxins are that much more powerful and very little is needed. Probably a false sense of security ;-)
      Either way I treat snakes with respect. I figure you get an infection either way if you are bit, venomous or not.
      I also understand the letting him go on its way. No need for any additional stress.
      Great video.

    i'm not like, an expert, or anything, but it would seem to me that snake was trying REALLY hard to get you to just leave him alone...

      Narture just wants to live in peace.... but, if handling this guy for a few minutes educates a few thousand folks and leads to more understanding and less blind hatred... then he can sacrifice a moment.

      word, i wasn't hating, just commenting, and maybe someone might read it, find a snake in the wild and instead of killing it, realize it probably just wants to be left alone...it was an awesome find though!

      The snake's first instinct is to flee. They don't reason so they can't want something to leave it alone. Once they feel like they're not in danger, they calm down.

    I have heard that the coral snake has tiny fangs and the bite is more of a chewing action to get the fangs to imbed in your skin so you may be able to shake them off of you before you get a dose of venom. Any truth to that?

    • @BobHansler
      @BobHansler  5 лет назад

      If they get angry enough they become fast.? Not as quick with the venom as a Rattlesnake, but it only takes a second or two.

    "friend to Jack" Is what I heard growing up. I ran to a Kingsnake and put my foot on him and uh...it was the real deal with the business end. He and I were at an animal park and he was just hanging near the education buildings, in a hole. They took him in and he lived 20 years. I named him Carl. I hope he liked air conditioning because he lived his life inside.

    isn't it dangerous for the snake and the handler to hold a snake by its tail? or is that just for non venomous snakes. obviously you wouldn't just grab a venomous species by the middle and cradle it. I'm just learning about snakes and how to care for them and handle them.

    Wearing leather gloves for protection against the small mouth of a coral snake only works if you don’t have gloves with holes in the fingertips! Fingers and toes are where most humans are bitten with coral snakes. Not a good example.
