I ordered the M3 LR AWD for the same reasons as you. Performance model is too low (I live in Norway, on a farm with fairly nasty roads), less comfortable, too big rims (more expensive tires, bigger chance of a pothole wrecking them), and has no trailer hitch option. I did order the 19" sport rims on mine though, which I've since regretted as I didn't know about the standard rims having a removable cover (which I found extremely ugly, and initially thought was non removable). Almost a month and a half since I ordered, so I don't want to change the order now and push back the delivery date. If the Performance came with an option to have the same ride height as the LR, as well as a trailer hitch option and 19" rims, I might have gone for that instead.
Back in August I too ordered the LRAWD but I was really lucky and was offered the unicorn P- so all the benefits of the long range 18" wheels etc but with the 3.2 second acceleration, unfortunately they now no longer offer this as an option, but to say im over the moon with this car is an understatement , congratulations on the 10k subs.

Good video. I totally agree with your logic. The Long Range AWD makes even more sense for me as I live in Canada where it is very cold and snowy for half the year and you can expect to loose about 40% of your range under those conditions.

One of the best reviews I have seen. Very nicely explained the difference between all the 3 models. Well done. This will help me a lot in making a decision as I am looking to buy one very soon :) Thank you
@@thibaultgrosse4442 just for my own knowledge. What sound are you guys referring to? Do you mean the road noise? electric motor sound? I didn't know there was a sound difference between the different configurations. Interesting.
For anyone who sees this now (April 2022): So at least in the US, the LR doesn’t come with a year of premium connectivity (I just bought it after my 30 days was up, in my LR, it was like $99 USD per year). Also I think the RWD now comes with heated rear seats and the audio system, although I believe the interior is still the same. The RWD is slower now in acceleration as well (would have to check but it’s 5.8 seconds I believe 0-60mph), and the LR is fractionally faster (4.2). All prices have gone up by a good deal now as well.
I agree the sensible me picked the LR as well. I've had those rubber band tires on my S3, have an 80 mile commute and never track my cars. I picked up the LR and added the Acceleration boost which gets me down to 3.7sec 0-60 not bad at all that's RS3 speed. I even selected the magnetic ride S3 due to the comfort mode but it still felt like I was ripping the wheels off when i hit a pot hole or was on a bad road. The one thing I do miss out on that I hear they're adding soon is track mode for the LR. Not being able to adjust the traction control features is a real downside of the standard and long range. If you ever want to do a track event you're stuck with a very limited traction control and have to bypass it by manually disabling the system. At minimum track mode should be included if you buy the Acceleration boost.
The more I look at your car, the more I like the 18" dark gray wheels over the 19" silver wheels. The contrast looks better when you have a white exterior on darker wheels.
I went with a white PM3-. Same acceleration as a performance model but with the suspension and wheels of the dual motor. Not sure how much this config costs now, but when I purchased it saved me about 6500 from the price of the full performance version. I totally agree with your assessments and reasoning for going with the 18in wheels and softer/taller suspension. Love the way your spoiler looks, may need to get one:)
I'm planning on getting my Model 3 next year. When I went for a test drive, I asked for Standard Range+ but I was given a Long Range. That audio system is what sold me in the Long Range M3. After listening to it for a while, I don't want to settle for the SR audio system. Great video, keep it up!
I made exactly the same decision for the same reasons. Living in California, the land of potholes, I did not want 20 inch wheels with the low profile tires. I could care less about the spoiler. I paid for the performance upgrade so my 0-60 is 3.9 and the car is awesomely fast off the line. I have had mine three months and love it. No regrets about my decision. Build quality was also excellent. I had one very minor paint issue which Tesla fixed and otherwise the car has been perfect.
Wish I’d seen your channel before I ordered a 2021 SR+ last week, I still think for what I need, this will do the job, but after reviewing your decision making it think I’ll will cancel my order (probably losing my £100 deposit) to order a new LR. I do feel a LR will hold it’s value better and appeal to a greater audience in the future, whilst residual values will come under a little pressure as the car ages and more used examples hit the market place. Plus in the mean time you get the benefits you described in your video. I think the extended range, all wheel drive and upgraded speaker system will help future proof the car mor3 than the SR+, however it is a mighty close call. Finally, and personally I will be sticking with the 18” as I think the dark grey contrast is a better match (on a white car) than 19” silver alloys for an additional £1400. My only decision now is which home charger I want, and I’m leaning towards the Tesla own charger, based purely on aesthetic. P.s. every cloud has a silver lining, if I lose my £100 deposit, I’ll at least be able to use your referral code to soften the blow. Keep up the good work 👍
Great thinking there mate. I guess ultimately you chose the SR+ for a reason, but if you feel the LR is better suited, now is the best time to make that change. Best of luck whichever you go for.
There are a few more differences between the SR+ and LR. You can charge the LR at 250kw, and the SR+ at 170KW. The two motors can heat the battery at 7KW on the LR, but only 3.5KW for the single motor on the SR+. Despite all this I went for the SR+, it's lightest the most efficient model in kw/mile and Bjorn's 1000km test showed only 30 more minutes on the journey (10:30hhmm). I find that the performance feels similar between 30mph-60mph anyway but I've only tried that out once.
Getting larger wheels than 18" makes no sense. It significantly reduces range, slows acceleration, makes the ride worse, and makes it much easier to damage wheels and tires. I would buy a Performance model today, if I could get it with 18" wheels. I know there are after market options, but spending time and money getting new wheels on a brand new car is the last thing I want to do.
I went for the mid-range much for the same reasons, especially the point about having kids, who absolutely love having the entertainment package in the car. We make a long trip every other month to see relatives and always stopped off half way for snacks at the services. My thinking was that it wouldn’t make any difference having an EV and here I was wrong. The kids now stay in the car leaving me free to have a proper break. Haha
your explanation was very useful to me, although I am planning on buying a model Y long-range later this year. I do agree with your reasoning for buying your car. Thanks.
When I watch your videos I want a Tesla but then I read/watch other stuff and all the issues people have worry me as i seem to be a problem magnet. Great quality video 👍
From a Tesla owner, yes there are problems, keep in mind tesla is more a tech company than a car company, but, it's amazing, constant software updates (for free) improve my car, autopilot is just amazing, and Netflix while you charge is very good for the kids( but they only get 15 mins since it charges very fast)
Awesome video! Your reasons are exactly the same as mine! I'm coming from a 300bhp 4 wheel drive diesel BMW and I'm getting my Long Range Model 3 in white on black on Friday!!!! (same as yours) and I've seen a lot of videos of popped tyres on Model 3 Performance cars. Keep up the great work
Thanks a lot! 330d xDrive remapped 😛 since going xDrive I don't think I'll ever buy a 2 wheel drive car (especially nothing north of 250bhp). Having that confidence regardless of weather is great, and let's be honest the roads are rarely dry in the UK!
I made the same choice following much the same logic. The Performance model is fun but the wheel/tyre combination is just too uncomfortable and expensive to replace if you damage a wheel - £1k per corner wheel/tyre combined versus £500 for the 18”. And those low-profile tyres on poor roads are much more vulnerable to allowing the wheel to be destroyed by a pothole. When you add in the £1.5k acceleration boost, you have a more comfortable “stealth” Performance (now just 0.6 of a second slower to 60) for £8.5k less with the identical interior and a more comfortable ride. And who needs “track mode”? How often would the average performance driver take their car to the track?
Currently haveing to do the same choice as you had to do , im mainly struggeling with Not buying the SR+ over either of the other , the prices here in norway atm are SR+ = 29.5k gbp LR = 38k gbp PF = 42k gbp
I've ordered the long range. The audio is a big deal for me and I was very disappointed with the standard set up considering how much you are paying in the first place. Extra distance and just being a little bit quicker made sense too.
great video, ordered the SR+ here in Canada. I travel short distances daily and really mostly listen to news on the radio so no need for premium sound. also seen video that the RWD with snow tires drives really well in winter here in the city. also I get the federal incentive rebate of $5K. have installed a 14-50r outlet in my garage for daily charging and my workplace also provides free charging in the parking lot.
I came to the same conclusion as yourself and ordered the LR but with Sport Wheels as they where available when I ordered. I just have to wait until the 10th now to pick it up from Bristol. I will be using your referral so expect another 1000 free miles.
This video really did help me make a decision. I'm looking to get a Tesla in the next couple years, so I've been doing my research. But his video really helped decide that the Long-range just makes most sense, financially and environmentally.
Really informative. I personally went for the SR+ because I can't imagine driving more than 2.5-3 hrs without wanting to stop anyway, I have more than enough data for tethering to negate the need for premium connectivity, and the speakers are nice but not for €10k more. And given its my first car (been on motorbikes, but got a family now), the SR+ is already enough to be paying. Might upgrade to the LR in the future though, since you make a lot of great points. Enjoying the content mate, making delivery waiting a but more bearable, keep it up
Thank you Chris for info on link for referral.I will definitely use when I purchase. I am currently living in Devon but next month I am moving back to Saddleworth.
Fully agree. The money saved on your can be used on FSD and spoiler. In Australia the bigger wheels are standard on the LR, but can’t order white interior anymore, which is a pity. I love the white on white with darker wheels and chrome delete.
@@SpawnPoiint very true. At the very start the performance still had 18 inch aero wheels as standard (which some people preferred as they are better suited to Aussie roads). And until recently the white interior was available in the LR. I guess it's to sit the market. Great video!
I was leaning towards the Performance model at first, mainly because the performance gap between the LR and P was so big. But when I learned there's a performance upgrade package available for the LR it brought performance for me in the sweet spot. Also: for people that would like to exchange the Tesla rims for third party rims; there's a much larger choice of 18/19" rims, which don't fit the Performance model's larger breaks. The regular suspension with higher ground clearance is a positive for me as well. Finally, I don't like that carbon fibre spoiler so with a Performance model, I would have removed that anyway.
What a huge difference in price between the long range and the performance. Here in the Netherlands it's only about 5500 euros, both with the same trim as in the UK.
Thank you for your video! I made my mind up and am choosing the long-range dual motor! I originally was going with the performance, but the tire cost, and other costs including a harsh winter, weren't worth it. And so I set to get the long -range!
I’m taking delivery of a model 3 SR+ next week as I don’t feel I would need the extra range or features of long range but do agree that’s probably the best buy.
I have just got the performance model 3, and I get your point about the 20 inch wheels! But there not really a problem, I often drive country road routes some of them you would struggle to call roads and the wheels have been fine. It all makes senses when you put your foot down its just rapid, I have no regrets. I couldn’t have dealt with the, look what you could have had if I didn’t get the performance. Great vid👍
That's why I got the same Long Range with the exception mines has 19 in alloys. It's a better all around buy. Especially if you live in a place where there is winter
I have the SR+, white with white interior which they gave me for free because of the end of quarter push. With rebate etc, the full price was right at 40k. I love this car so much, though I reallly wanted the long range initially, after owning the SR+ I couldn't justify it. Unless range/speed/AWD are crucial for you, the normal sound quality is still great IMO(I have heard the quality of the premium and they are AMAZING) and fog lights are not very important to me. The ability to pay for premium connectivity came out right after I purchased the SR+ and that was a big plus.
Totally agree with you. You’ve mirrored exactly my thinking about the M3. On UK roads the 18inch wheels make the most sense even if they don’t look as good as the 19/20’s. Enjoy the car!
@@SpawnPoiint I've seen pretty much every single video on tesla that you have made and others that have mentioned you in their videos. Im in america going to get my tesla in the next week or so and this channel has helped so much in the process. Do you have any more plan for future car videos? Id love to see more, its almost like watching a show!
I like the front license. I have the same version, with same color and seats configuration, but I choose the 19", mostly for the nicer look compare to the plastic cover, and also go the towing kit to carry bikes or use a trailer to carry larger items not fitting into the trunk. I wish the Model 3 was a hatchback like the Model S. May be in the future I will consider the Model Y but I would prefer a smaller size Model 2 (?) with a hatchback like the VW ID.3
I'm totally with you on your model level choice. I've been looking at the same but in the model "Y" variant but only looking. A very well presented video, just sub'd.
I have had my model 3 performance for 4 days and going back to service centre tomorrow because side camera not working and a couple other issues that have been in it since day one. Other than the couple of problems it is a great car to drive but you see your range disappear if you flog it.
newer models have closed rear shelf. The bass sound was way better on early models with open meshed grill there. you can test the difference it by releasing one of the rear seat back support
You can also add heated rear seats to the sr+. £300 on the app and they'll activate the feature. The one thing I really miss from my leaf is the heated steering wheel though.
I get my LR in 2 weeks, same balance I made, 9 times out of 10 not going to need the performance but if you want to say "I beat you and it's not even the fast one" and still do more more than 250 real world miles on a full charge, it's the obv choice saving £10/15k against the performance 👍
I went for the LR AWD for the same reasons but I also got the 19” wheels as I love the contrast of chrome against the white body and also Edmunds ran a test with the 18s vs 19s and the 19s had better grip which gives faster acceleration and better braking and cornering. I also went with the white interior as to me it brightens up the interior more and the white seats are also the most stain resistant in Tesla’s tests. Thinking about performance boost upgrade but seriously I don’t think the use would justify the cost.
Can’t remember if I said already but I made the same decision to go for the long range like yourself, awaiting an anticipated arrival of it second week March 🤞 great video and explanation tho👍
@@SpawnPoiint it's my home town so easy to recognise. I've only seen a couple of model 3s around here so they're still a novelty. Fingers crossed more appear and then onto the 2nd hand market in the future 🤞
Hi, great video as always. I had decided on the long range version with the 19" wheels with the hidden tow bar (just in case it's needed for carrying mountain bikes) and pay for the performance boost as a best of both worlds, but I test drove the performance version the other day and now I can't decide again thanks to the sport mode jump and the track mode option on the performance version!
I feel that pain, and only you know if it's worth it. You don't want to regret either choice, and the fact you're even considering the Performance, you'll probably regret going for the LR.
SpawnPoiint yes I know what you mean. Might have to convince my girlfriend to sell her old Chevy pick up and get the LR for her. That way we have both options available?

If you're looking for efficiency, the SR+ was a great choice.
Totally agree- exactly my thoughts too
Great video! I agree with everything you said. About to test the long range version tomorrow, hopefully i will buy a Tesla this month.
Haha
Haha that sounds like the perfect outcome all round 😂
your explanation was very useful to me, although I am planning on buying a model Y long-range later this year. I do agree with your reasoning for buying your car. Thanks.
Thanks for watching Jan.
Congrats on 10k subs! 👏
Thank you dude, really appreciate it too.
I think you made the correct logical choice. Good job on the video.
Keep up the great work
Thanks mate. Sounds like you're coming from a 335d? I came from a 335i, and it was a great change, I've enjoyed every second. Good luck!
Thanks a lot! 330d xDrive remapped 😛 since going xDrive I don't think I'll ever buy a 2 wheel drive car (especially nothing north of 250bhp). Having that confidence regardless of weather is great, and let's be honest the roads are rarely dry in the UK!
Glad that I have came across your channel!❤️ Keep up the good work and please please make more Tesla videos!🚗 Congrats on 10K🔥🔥
Thanks mate. I try to alternate between tech and Tesla. Think I have 14 tesla videos so far ☺️
Exactly. I feel that what I've said a lot of LR owners feel the same too.
Your videos have just sold me a Tesla model 3 Long range AWD!
Haha thanks mate
Currently haveing to do the same choice as you had to do , im mainly struggeling with Not buying the SR+ over either of the other ,
the prices here in norway atm are
SR+ = 29.5k gbp
LR = 38k gbp
PF = 42k gbp
I've ordered the long range. The audio is a big deal for me and I was very disappointed with the standard set up considering how much you are paying in the first place. Extra distance and just being a little bit quicker made sense too.
Great minds 👍
great video, ordered the SR+ here in Canada.
Sounds like the perfect setup! Enjoy the car mate.
I came to the same conclusion as yourself and ordered the LR but with Sport Wheels as they where available when I ordered. I just have to wait until the 10th now to pick it up from Bristol. I will be using your referral so expect another 1000 free miles.
That's great to hear! Good luck for the collection, not long to wait now. Thank you too 🙏
This video really did help me make a decision. I'm looking to get a Tesla in the next couple years, so I've been doing my research. But his video really helped decide that the Long-range just makes most sense, financially and environmentally.
Glad it helped Lance. A lot will change over the coming years, I reckon there'll be a 500 mile Model 3 and Y before long.
Great video ... never normally comment on any videos ... but this was so helpful and well edited I had to comment.
Thanks for taking the time to comment mate
That’s great. I’ll be passing through Devon next week actually.
Great video! Really informative. Just ordered the same model myself in Blue with the upgraded wheels. Thanks
Nice one mate. Hope delivery isn’t too long.
Fully agree. The money saved on your can be used on FSD and spoiler. In Australia the bigger wheels are standard on the LR, but can’t order white interior anymore, which is a pity. I love the white on white with darker wheels and chrome delete.
Really strange how each country has a slightly different option list.
It seems the price keeps changing, also the grant here is no longer available on the Performance, so the gap is bigger for that reason.
Thank you for your video! I made my mind up and am choosing the long-range dual motor! I originally was going with the performance, but the tire cost, and other costs including a harsh winter, weren't worth it. And so I set to get the long -range!
Enjoy mate. It’s a great choice, and you can’t go wrong with any.
What a fantastic video was that Scarborough at the end love North bay
Good spot, yes it was!
arrggg. now i want the LR. great video.
Haha sorry mate 😂
I’m taking delivery of a model 3 SR+ next week as I don’t feel I would need the extra range or features of long range but do agree that’s probably the best buy.
I have just got the performance model 3, and I get your point about the 20 inch wheels! But there not really a problem, I often drive country road routes some of them you would struggle to call roads and the wheels have been fine. It all makes senses when you put your foot down its just rapid, I have no regrets. I couldn’t have dealt with the, look what you could have had if I didn’t get the performance. Great vid👍
Nice one 😎
Great to see Scarborough in the vid :)
That's why I got the same Long Range with the exception mines has 19 in alloys. It's a better all around buy. Especially if you live in a place where there is winter
Great video brother
I love the quality of your content 👌
Thank you 🙏
We bought the LR RWD last year. Really LR, doing great in Swiss Alps, Swiss winter wasn't a problem. We hope that they will sell it again next year
That’s awesome. Hope you enjoy it too.
I went for the LR AWD for exactly the same reasons. And mine is also white exterior with black leather.
Cheers 👍
Great choice 😎
@8:45 That "modest" speed is much faster than other cars in that price range
Great video.
That’s great, glad you’re happy with it too.
Wish they had black rims on the LR like the model y does. Then just get the acceleration boost
Totally agree with you. You’ve mirrored exactly my thinking about the M3. On UK roads the 18inch wheels make the most sense even if they don’t look as good as the 19/20’s. Enjoy the car!
Thanks Steven 👍
dude just watching this and you're already at 112k wow
Thanks mate. I know, it's been a crazy year haha.
You helped me make up my mind!! Thank you!!
I like the front license.
I have the same version, with same color and seats configuration, but I choose the 19", mostly for the nicer look compare to the plastic cover,
and also go the towing kit to carry bikes or use a trailer to carry larger items not fitting into the trunk.
I wish the Model 3 was a hatchback like the Model S.
May be in the future I will consider the Model Y but I would prefer a smaller size Model 2 (?) with a hatchback like the VW ID.3
A Model 2, that's a good shout.
I'm totally with you on your model level choice. I've been looking at the same but in the model "Y" variant but only looking. A very well presented video, just sub'd.
Thanks Michael, it'll be nice once the Y is here too.
Excellent analysis! Thanks!
Dude you channel is growing very fast, great job!
I have had my model 3 performance for 4 days and going back to service centre tomorrow because side camera not working and a couple other issues that have been in it since day one. Other than the couple of problems it is a great car to drive but you see your range disappear if you flog it.
Also got the LR AWD.
Wanted big battery, 4 wheel drive, and towbar.
I'd recommend getting some cheap Model 3 mud flaps from Amazon.
I am tempted. They actually give it an aggressive look too.
@@SpawnPoiint more that they do actually protect the paint. Tesla issued some for Scandinavia, but not here.
newer models have closed rear shelf. The bass sound was way better on early models with open meshed grill there. you can test the difference it by releasing one of the rear seat back support
Oh really, that's interesting to know. I guess the closed rear has helped with reducing road noise from the rear though.
I watch your videos for the amazing production quality.
Thank you dude
quality info thank you
Thanks Iain.
Getting this one. Thank you!!!!!
yer i ordered the LR as well overall i think more value for money
Great choice
You can also add heated rear seats to the sr+. £300 on the app and they'll activate the feature. The one thing I really miss from my leaf is the heated steering wheel though.
Thanks for that. I didn’t realise that option existed.
Great vid, it's helped me decide 👌
Thank you 🙏
I get my LR in 2 weeks, same balance I made, 9 times out of 10 not going to need the performance but if you want to say "I beat you and it's not even the fast one" and still do more more than 250 real world miles on a full charge, it's the obv choice saving £10/15k against the performance 👍
Wonderful video! Well planned, shot & framed!
Thanks Rob!
Also a M3 owner live in Helmsley. love the video.
Thank you Jack 👍
Same choice I made. Also to note that you can’t spec a tow bar on the performance model. 👍
I didn't realise that, is it something to do with the suspension setup? If so, then maybe the P- would still spec?
@@SpawnPoiint Not sure, I assume so. Cool videos by the way. ;-)
Great comment. The boost upgrade is tempting, but I don't need it (yet) either.
Can’t remember if I said already but I made the same decision to go for the long range like yourself, awaiting an anticipated arrival of it second week March 🤞 great video and explanation tho👍
That's awesome mate, enjoy the new car. Not long to wait now.
I think I'd make the same choice! Great video as usual, nice to see a bit of Scarborough too 😁
Haha good spot, it was a post-lockdown drive at the weekend. Didn't stop long though.
Pretty much why I went for the long range as well 👍 if you haven’t got it already go for the performance boost it adds lots of grins 😄
Nice one, sounds good mate.
I almost every product category the mid-range or mid-tier item or trim is normally the best value.
That’s a fair comment actually.
