I have. She even manages how I respond to emails. She contradicts her instructions on day to day basis in such a way that she made it appear I have not done what she asked me to do knowing that it was the instruction she made a day ago. She supersedes a lot of her instructions. It's so stressful. One time I had enough, I answered her email point by point to her allegations. My last paragraph was telling her that I value my job and I don't want to get fired because I have a family to take care of. Until now she hasn't responded, and that alone is stressful not knowing what will happen by next week.
I do the job incompleted He knows what I'm 😳 doing Then he is getting furious And I get calmer This is my game a lousy incompleted job and play like a dumb
@@jackwinters5942 dont let it bother you. These people are awful. My bosses are similar. They don't respond to me but have all day to message their friends who get promoted over me.
I agree you can't you absolutely can't they cry they take it personal they think you hate them they act awful it's worse when you try to communicate it's absolutely awful it's like you're screwed
I work with a huge company my manager micromanaging has gotten to the point that she demands to know what I am doing on a constant level. I have worked for a lot of companies in my life, huge and small alike, and I have never been questioned about my work ethics. It has gotten to the point where I have been on short term disability because she caused me so much stress I passed out.
I just quit my job without another one lined up because somehow in the past couple months my manager's micromanaging got so bad it was destroying my mental health and i had no motivation to keep working there. In my exit interview with the CEO i told him to send her to a leadership seminar 🤭
i just quit mine today. My manager bullied me, shouted at me, overloaded me with work, was constantly breathing over my neck, took credit constantly for work i did, and blamed me for all the wrong things. A year ago a started felling strong chest palpitations due to stress and anxiety. I endured this for almost 10 years and today i gave my resignation and im full of hapiness for finally being able to do it.
Careful with that a lot of micro-managers are that way because it is part of an underlying personality disorder. They will leave having interpreted things in a re-affirming way in most cases. It's s a self-protective thing that is part of the PD.
I wonder if she did it on purpose. If you study this stuff, you can pinpoint the do's and don'ts. Then choose the don'ts in order to make a coworker lose motivation and leave
I started a new job three months ago and gave my notice today because I have a micromanager female. Without being said I am 59 years old and have 40 years experience in the working environment so I am definitely not going to put up with afro controlling demanding woman manager of the pitch
I'm working for yet another micromanaging boss. I think these people are insecure, and fearful that a talented employee might steal the spotlight. My current boss's favorite tactic seems to be withholding information that is needed to do a particular job, but then pick it apart after completion. His identification of someone's mistake gives him the feeling of superiority. I have over 30 years' experience in the too-and-die trade, as well as a degree in Mechanical Engineering. I can only guess that I pose some kind of threat to their role as manager. Companies claim that they are desperately in need of skilled people, but today's managers don't know how to employ them. No wonder there are so many people who have simply had enough, and leave the workforce as part of the Great Resignation.
You're 100% correct. Bosses micromanage you because they see you as a threat or they're envious. Always! There's nothing you can do about it. Now your boss is focusing a lot of attention and effort to try and discredit you, so they can feel less jealous and to try to show to other people that that you're not that great. He wants you gone because your presence drains him. An envious person see you as an enemy and they are drained by your presence. They will do everything in their power to take you out.
This looks so familiar. I also feel like information Is kept on purpose. I was not sure at first I thought I did something wrong. But then realized I would always get asked to do new task, documents on my days alone. I would complete them, however get criticized about every single things I did wrong like. Not name the documents right name… feels like walking on eggshells.
That’s what I’m going thru in my govt job. I’ve done my job for 12 years and I’m 2 yrs and 8? Mos away from retiring at 62. We work in a wonky dinosaur station. I’m just about ready to bail early due to being treated like an imbecile who does not know their job. I don’t have time for this kind of nonsense.
The best thing to do is update your resume and leave for the next great opportunity. Micromanagers believe they are right on everything and tend to be insecure about themselves. They most likely see you as a threat...like they know you could do their job. So they gaslight you and try to make you feel you aren't that great an employee.
Yep. My first boss out of college turned out to be a micro manager and she utterly killed morale. The whole team would go outside during lunch breaks just to vent about her. I put up with her overbearing crap for a year before I finally had had enough and left. Haven't dealt with anything like that since, thankfully. Nothing like working for someone who admonishes you for taking initiative and getting things done as opposed to consulting with her first. If you can afford to, get out. Don't put up with being micro managed.
@@matthewsmith2787 Heck no bro if anything she’s scared of you, you need to confront her if she’s talking crap about you. I know that’s easy to say but if any manger was talking bad about me I’d challenge them
Same. My first micromanager destroyed my moral. It was until the lockdown that I had the time to regain my inner peace. After that, I came back to the workforce with a second micromanager (lucky me). This time I stood my ground refusing ro reloose my peace and critical thinking against her. As a result, my micromanager said I was making the environment toxic by showing disrespect (IE not following her). After 2 years of both of us having a stalemate, I quit to greener pastures.
Best way to deal with a boss who is a micromanager? Just wait until no more noise is coming out of their pie hole, then look at them and say "Yeah, OK." in a pleasant voice. When they walk away thinking that they've imposed their will, control, and dominion over you, just go back to doing what you were doing, since you probably know what you're doing better than they do.
Yup that's exactly what I'm going to to do. I have a nursing manager who I can't stand. I've been working at my job for 5 years she comes in and completely changes my job description. Everything I do is not enough for her. So at this point I don't really care anymore. I'm a nurse and if she even so much as threatens me I take it higher AND/OR quit. Imma just keep doing what I do.
Best solution is to quit, they'll never change. I'm dealing with one right now and it's insufferable. She's constantly watching you and telling you what to as you're about to do it anyway, repeats herself on simple tasks, asks for updates when you barely started, wastes time correcting things her way when the work is already done, texts me before work even starts and lays out a detailed schedule down to the time. The best part is she comes in hours before her shift off the clock on her days off to tell us what to do and work, which means texting all that shit doesn't even mean anything if she's going to be here anyway. Apparently she doesn't have a life outside of work? It's AWFUL! The best part is I've worked there longer than she has and she knows less than me, yet shes still breathing down my neck. They want to know everything and control everything, it's stressful and not worth it.
I think the best solution is to (try) to find the humor in it and have empathy (whilst you're looking for something else) She can't help herself for whatever reason. Never believe that you need the micromanaging. If you did, you wouldn't be looking for something else!!
I thought I was the only one dealing with this situation., my boss does both favoritism and micromanagement which feels so toxic at times. I’m just waiting for market to improve to move out from here .., Hoping good days are coming soon 🤞
@@friendlyme143 dont wait start looking you never know you may find a job. you wait your mental health will suffer like mine is.. so yeah even putting your resume out there helps with the stress in a way that you are at least trying to find a way out.. the market is tough yes, but when the going gets tough the tough get going... ppl are finding jobs even in this bad economy so can you and i so dont wait..
Crazy when they get all emotional and defensive about about legitimate pushback - absolutely not the employees job to be their therapist (unless it is 😮).
another reason for micromanaging: trying to get rid of someone & looking for every oppty to criticise her work, sometimes deliberately to hurt her morale
This would be my coworker. I’ve been there 9 weeks and it’s getting worse each week. She’s fuming not because she can’t piss me off. I am currently there for entertainment purposes only
If the only reason your boss can tell you why they want you to do something a certain way is that that's how they did it when in your position it's a pretty good clue that they're micromanaging you. My boss used to constantly try and get me to change how I was doing things and the only justification he could give was that was how he used to do it. Didn't matter that my job was getting done, that I explained that I'm doing it the way that works for me, that I've tried his way and I found it slower/more difficult/etc to do it that way, etc, etc, etc.
Okay but can i add, if his way IS actually faster but its a matter of you learning it to the fullest before you become better then its not a bad thing. Sometimes just because it works for you doesnt mean you cant change. Sometimes other ways work better and in a workplace, efficiency is always needed.
I agree. The results should matter more than the technique/processed used. As long as the employee is not crossing any ethical boundaries and they’re meeting goals and productivity requirements are met in a timely manner, then managers should let you do your own thing. It’s so frustrating and depressing when you can’t work with some autonomy. It’s like being treated like a child or you’re dumb and incompetent
@@janewildly And the danger is that you start believing that you need to be micromanaged. I have a micromanager who has been doing this for a year. It's like, why did you hire me if you're doing all of my work for me? No thanks.
My boss will write my emails for me and then email them to me with everything written and a space left blank to put the person's name in. It gets really aggravating but on the other hand I'm getting paid 26 bucks an hour for this loser to do all of my work so its not that bad lol
Wow for me it's the other way. He makes me write out his emails and leave a space for his signature...gives me zero credit and he makes almost triple what I do. I can't wait to finally quit and watch him struggle to form a basic sentence.
My new supervisor is in my opinion the worst type of micromanager, she has almost no clue what my job entails yet is constantly trying to tell me how to do it. She insists she be included on all my meetings and emails but will still call me or message about what I’m working on. She also wants the team to document every task we do of everyday in our personal calendars and create cases of those tasks in another system. And on top of that, she schedules one on one meetings every day or every other day to again ask about what I’m working on!!! 🤬🤬 I’m so ready ready to tell her to leave me the the f*** alone so I can just do my work!!!! I shouldn’t have to spend more time telling you about it then actually doing it. UPDATE: thank the lord I have since left that supervisor/ department and got a pay increase to boot!! But as I was giving my notice (1 month) of transfer. Sup comes and ask when I’m leaving where I’m going am I gonna miss her??….😐and when told I had a month she say “oh good, you’re still mine for another month”. Had my onboarding date changed and left 1 week later.
The problem also is that micromanaging stems from narcissism and narcissists are never wrong and will snap if told otherwise. Although the sentiment here is good and it’s all very sound advice it doesn’t always work. This is what I’m dealing with currently.
Day 6 and this lady is the absolute worst. I’ve never had to deal with someone like her. Feeling very discouraged and wanting to leave. Worst part is is I could’ve stayed at my last job if I knew this would happen
I have a toxic micromanaging boss, because it's not a large group my options are limited. I attempted to address the problem but retaliation was the result; in other words it didn't go well. What's worse is when everyone is aware of the problem but no one speaks up.
Micromanaging managers or supervisors are more likely being trained to be just that, otherwise they would be afraid that someone will bring it up. I bet that they are being encouraged to intimate employess in order to be highly productive every single minute, which is bs!
I have a manager who micromanages everyone on her team. It does make you feel better (schadenfreude) to know you're not the only one, but only a little bit. Not sustainable, and not something worker bees will put up long-term. It's hard to understand how Sr. Management doesn't put two and two together, but the micromanaging is in essence why our company only has one product in development.
Micromanaging is a serious problem that few people talk about. I was told off for cleaning up some mess of the floor, told that I was working too slowly.
That's okay I got offered a new job and started it probably been at it for 3 months now, then my direct boss left and I got in a tiff with his boss over a report that I wasn't supposed to be working on at all and now he's over nitpicking and replying and giving feedback to my boss about my work so now he's generally over managing the situation and giving me anxiety. And I'm like dude "maybe I should just leave" the money is good but I have other income and he's just driving me nuts so 3 months of great feedback and then bam one week and I'm on the shit list.
I dealt with a manager that felt threatened by me. Come to find out a manager that feels that an employee could take their position seems to try and move that person out.
My boss is one. She has alienated all 3 employees here at work. I need my job. I was good at it. I enjoyed it. It's now because of the new boss my health is being affected. Every day is a stressful day. She won't listen to anyone. She's always right. I have told people when I leave there will be no notice. It's hopeless.
im experiencing this, i believe my manager is 1 new in the role but 2 has a dysfunctional life outside of work and i think her job is the only thing she feels she has control over so she just goes hard.
This is exactly what I needed to hear. I actually have to have that dreadful conversation with a co-worker who is being looked at to possibly replace our assistant. She was just hired back and doesn't know me. As I was doing my work she was over my shoulder telling me every single step I needed to do, so I would stay 1 step ahead of her hoping she would get the hint that I knew what I was doing yet she's still over my shoulder looking for any tiny infraction. I understand that she's looking for something to make her look like she's "on top of things," but I'm getting pissed off that she's using me to make herself "look good."
I just resigned a job with a Micromanager. I was there 9 months. They provided no training for the sales computer and every transaction they hung over my shoulder always changing the inputs. Finally I asked why they constantly micromanaged me. He said honestly, I just enjoy messing with your head. Very passive aggressive. He would also log into my company email account and comment on specific emails I had sent to customers. There was nothing wrong with the emails, it was just his way of letting me know that he had his finger on me. Ridiculous.
When a boss answers emails addressed to me...that is a micromanager. I work for the worst. I've been with my company 10 years longer than her. She comes in makes all kind of changes to my job (demotion type work). Expects me to work 12 hrs a day. Pushes emails to me which are addressed to me like I can't read. She has overburdened my workload. She will not listen or comprehend when I say something. Forgot how we did things in the past. Everything has to be her way. I shouldn't have to quit because of poor, really poor management. It frustrates me that nobody does anything about these people. I've even filed a formal complaint because of some of the things she's said to me and how she treated me. Unfortunately she has turned me into a "just don't care" kinda gal. I'm okay with being let go, but I won't quit.
Sometimes I catch him just starring at me and he eavesdrops on my conversations or takes over my conversations. He truly doesn’t trust me and my confidence which was quite high is now really low - I feel crap.
Same.. i feel this way too. And they will purposely seated facing your direction and stop everything they are doing just to eavesdrop you. The moment i took up my phone to check on the notifications, she will start to jump on me and giving me tons of tasks to do.
There's an elephant in the room (at least within much of modern corporate culture), concerning many micromanagers: Many of these individuals (either consciously or unconsciously) are engaging in this behavior because when they're not picking apart the details of what those under them are doing, it becomes shockingly apparent that they don't actually bring value to the table on their own... These are the parasitic individuals we see all over the place within corporations today - often with fancy sounding job titles (always telling someone under them to be sure THEY get CC'd on YOUR email to so and so'.... even though they won't be part of the actual solution at any point in the process). And when you ask your boss what they were actually hired for, even he doesn't know?!? In short, many so-called micromanagers are actually engaging in a strategy to protect themselves - keeping the attention focused on others, so fewer people notice they are not bringing real value to the organization on their own..😉
Can't agree more to this. They bring zero value. Wait. Negative value. They just circle around with their petty tactics, dragging more and more people involved to cause drama. Why? They have no intention to solve problem. They are just looking ways to avoid taking any accountability. These ppl really got to go from leadership position. Very subtle yet incredibly toxic.
Here is the BEST way to deal with a 'Micro-Manager'. Either quit on the spot or give your one days' notice. Zero explanation. A 'Micro-Manager' can NEVER be reached, period. To think otherwise is to be even more delusional than the 'Micro-Manager' themselves. Do yourself a favor and leave immediately. If more employees where to exercise and implement these personal boundaries and tactics, failing companies would have the choice to either hire proper supervisors or go bankrupt. Cheers.
Same. I'm working at a concrete contracting company. It seems everytime I try to even touch one of the pouring and finishing/masonry tools, they'll take it away from me and make me rake concrete or clean THEIR tools. Well, I've had enough. I met a guy at my local gun shop who has a smaller company, needs workers, pays better, and gives 3 months off in the winter. Offered me a job on the spot. Next time I see him in the shop, I plan on taking up his offer.
@@SuperDB215 update - I got a new job 4 months ago and I've never felt so light. If you can, do what you need to do to get something new.. Once you're out you'll wonder why you waited so long.
micromanagers in retail....big problem in small retail businesses....managers that constantly interfere with transactions and make unhelpful comments in front of customers...probably to boost themselves up in the customers' eyes ....but most customers can see right through that behaviour
My problem is in my boss' eyes I'm underperforming but the standard they’re setting is unrealistic. In the past I've told them this and they just told me to try and "exceed my limits". Of course we can get better with time but that doesn’t mean I can do a 3 hour task in one hour. UGH
We had a contact managed by a private company with a team of people to manage it, send it for repair, dispose of it. Now all 1,143ish pieces will fall on just two of us. I sister with my boss who goes off during inventory, a station manager who won’t give out team time to finish the job and wants this official list with all discrepancies-this year I’ll be 60. I’ve worked there also 12 years. I do a good job, but I am being micromanaged and treated like an imbecile. It’s like you said that (but I didn’t) that’s not what I wanted, it’s all about the gotcha moments to take you down. Not playing that game. Retirement early to save my mental health? God help me endure- all this takes coordinating
Been working for five months and been moved from role to role (four times) during the five months. I'm not even interested in continuing working with them honestly but this video helped me recover my faith in me. I thought I was being dramatic or "depressed" as my boss said...
I’m new, my boss (one of the company Director) is a micromanager. At the end of the first week he said my ethic is awful (he didnt talk about my performance at all because he hasn’t seen any of my work) and threatened to Fire me the next week. This is the first time I’ve ever received such mean critics, rather than feedback on my performance, and I honestly felt like crying.
@@squeezytuna I've been working at a company for a month and a half and got fired for a minor mistake I made, and I barley get any feedback from him, the only feedback I got was all negative and it was when I was getting fired. No positive feedback from him at all and just pure micromanagement from him. He kinda did me a favor though because that job was just to occupy my time before I start school.
My "micromanager" seems to have OCPD and Narcissism. It's like they are stuck in a single-player video game where everyone is an object and a rival, and they got very good at superficial lingo, but don't seem to really understand the object of the game. You get stuck repeating the same entry-level tasks while being treated like you have never done them before. All I know is Grey Rocking everything about them. They are so stuck on themselves that I try be incredibly boring and non-reactive to them, and I keep pivoting my attention to what is healthiest for me at all times. If I want to do something I don't ask permission, I just do it. If they try to silo me away from people, I play aloofly social with whomever I want and act like I don't notice their territoriality. I stay professionally pleasant, and privately growing.
Last year I took an Accounting/Administrative job with a particular company. My boss always says she is not a micro manager. However, she is the epitome of one and not receptive to new ideas in the automated office. She loves paper. There are so much more things she should focus on for the company. But because she's inept , she rather make huge issues over the trivial things (like being a dictator on filing unnecessary repetitive documents). My mental health and morale is being compromised and I am now finding myself falling right into her scapegoat traps. I just wish she would eat all those papers along with the copier machine.
This isn’t necessarily an acute observation on my part, micromanagers are ineffective and insecure as you pointed out. They are oftentimes lazy and want you to pick up the slack on behalf of the ineffective employees who should have already been fired. Every expectation is imposed on me, as if I’m the savior. Yet, no one else has to adhere to policy. And when I address the issue and call a spade a spade, I’m automatically marked, chided, and dismissed as a disgruntled employee. What a Circus.
it can also be a fear on the boss's part of being replaced if i can do his/her job for cheap and more efficiently. my last boss at a small company would do work by hand that could easily be done on a computer. he would take a week to do something that would take me a day. and he took forever to get a computer for me with the required software. and then a month later he lets me go because im not what he expected. he waited after going home time to give notice. im sorry you didn't say anything the whole time and now all of a sudden there is a problem. got another job in a few weeks.
You bring up an excellent point about when your talent and work ethic threatens your boss. I see this not all the time, but frequently. I'm sorry you had to go through this, but I'm glad you got another job quickly - are you happier in it?
All the micromanagers at my job found out the hard way that I’m far too hard headed for their toxic BS yet they have nothing to write me up on because I do my job very very well. The best they can manage is talking smack about me right behind my back.
I have new manager and honestly it's over managing and it drives me crazy, I am self autonomous. Crazy thing on our first conversation they said I am not a micromanager and totally started over managing.
My boss always threatens to fire me if I do something outside of her own opinion. Even though my strategies are right at times, I’m always at fault for doing my job. Let alone, the owner makes me sacrifice my time to make her life easier. The lack of communication and inconsistency clearly shows how much they know about running their business. There’s only so much morale that can be brought about that toxic workplace. I’m ready to quit and discover my true potential
Thank you for this video. It clarified for me that I’m actually the reason my boss is micromanaging me - I’ve been struggling to meet expectations and he can’t trust me yet. I still think he’s toxic in some other ways, but the micromanagement is for my betterment. At least for now.
Being proactive, wonderful suggestion. It makes the micromanagers ask for more. You end up spending all your time documenting what you are doing in order to be proactive, rather than actually doing anything. Then get criticized at some point for being unproductive.
I once spent the span of two days trying to “fix” a nonexistent gap in some fine print at the bottom of an email because it kept displaying that way in his email viewer (only his, no one else’s) even though there was nothing I could do about it, not even HTML. I kept trying to explain this, and he video chatted me about it. He stopped pushing the matter once he made sure I tried everything he wanted me to in order to fix it even though I said it wasn’t a problem on my end. I wasted a ridiculous amount of time when I had large and urgent assignments…on a line gap in the fine print text at the bottom of an email. I gotta get out of here.
In my experience, and current situation when dealing with a micromanager, giving in to their constant demands of lists, reports, etc only makes the matters worse because they just keep adding more and more and more. Even if you try to step up and get ahead of their micromanagement, now thats your bar. You have proven you raised the bar for them and they will only make you raise it even higher in order to fuel their anxiety or self-stressing behaviors. For example: i have a bosses bosses boss that will take my work, print it, write on it, scan it and send it back to me rather than just respond to the email with the changes or updates in the body of the email. Now she is wanting me to also print everything and save it for "my records". .....how about no.....
I actually dread the days I have to work with my boss he completely micromanages everyone and I’ve been there for a few years. I know how to do my job and I feel completely completely Untrust Usted overly stressed and it’s completely messed up my mental health and I know it’s not just me because other people on the team are emailing me telling me the same thing, I’ve seen a few people quit and trust me if it wasn’t because I truly need the money I would have been out of there and the crazy part is is I really love the company I’m working for it’s just the manager is just too much.
I'm a chef and i lead a mostly unexperienced kitchen and front of house team. A lot of the people working for me are young, and for most its their first job. I work under a huge amount of pressure which i usually quite like, but recently people have been making jokes and comments about me being a micro manager. I think there is an extremely fine line between a good manager who is on top of things, and doesnt let things go wrong.. and a 'micro manager'. I would love nothing more than to let people get on with things (the things ive gone over with them numerous times) and not have to worry. But the second i take my eye off the ball, mistakes happen, and i am the only one responsible for any of them. I struggle because one person in particular (the one that called me a micro manager) is under managed! There is lots i would like to ask them to do but i worry they will take it the wrong way or feel overworked (they aren't). My options are to control the the situation, or to let things burn around me.
My problem is that I have no better job opportunities in my area. So, my goal is to save enough, take out an auto loan, buy a car and do my own work with uber. One of my team leads is so bad with the micromanaging that she could see me doing what I need to do, and she'll still find something to call me out on. I'm "over here, not over there", "I don't do this!!!", a year later, "go do that thing I told you not to do", I'm talking too much(when I'm not the only one conversating at that time), just three examples. If I can just do gig work, I'll be okay. I'm done with managers. May the gig economy grow and replace this garbage we call traditional employment. I'll pay my own damn benefits.
@@JenniferBrick Yes! Going well actually! I'm discussing an apprenticeship in my field of preference with some employers currently. Hopefully I'll have a new vocation in park management and/or horticulture once the COVID restrictions ease where I am 👍
I think the problem is too many managers were promoted for that position which they were not yet qualified to do. I work for an owner who is actually great most of the time. But then he goes through these irritating phases where he gets out of control and starts micromanaging everyone to the point of hair splitting. He usually in a manic stressed out state during that time. Everyone feels it. It makes you want to just be able to quit.
These ideas work with people who are humble & are open to civility. They come down for a moment & go right back to their old selves. Looking for opportunities to find errors, not listen, cut you off while asking a question. Only to play the victim or hero or I'm being misunderstood. I do believe elephants in any room should be addressed. Sometimes you gotta know when to hold em, know when to fold em, know when to walk away, know when to run.
Dealing with one right now, he has zero leadership/ managerial skill. Worst part is that he asks for shadowing team workers for an hour on daily basis which is not only killing my time but also killing associates will to work hard... At this point everybody just do their work, ignores whatever he communicates and move on whilst being a TL I have to respond to him about each and every detail, reports, performance, accuracy etc every hour daily.. he is definitely unskilled and insecure also seems like he doesn't trust the people he's working with which has the entire team not putting any effort in work including me as there is no zeal to perform well..
I just learned what this word even means and I 100% have a micromanaging boss. I never knew how to explain how I feel at work until I did the research. The sad thing is, it’s just me and her so I don’t even have any other employee’s to go to about it. I also can’t afford to just walk out so I’m applying to other jobs and waiting for something better.
This is RIFE within hospitality because there are a lot of default managers and staff with no education in, er, management or business, that have made their way up into management in the business.
My boss refused to sit in her own office and demanded to sit with us so she could have her eye on us, in her own words 😖, and dont let me start on the fact we weren't allowed to send an email without approval.
I’ve noticed once you put a scare on these types of managers they keep their distance and will even hide behind other managers. I once told my supervisor to step out into the hallway that we were gonna “talk” and he ran to get the other supervisor😄
my boss micramanage the whole team..she didn't trust anyone and so afraid that someone will do a wrong job..she control everything and wants to know everything..everyone is so stressed about her..
Control freak. plain and simple. i know it's not me. she does it to everyone and we have been through more people than a shop with 3 times as much traffic
9 times out of 10 it’s a trust issue. My supervisor is constantly micro managing my work when I am the best at what I do. Ironically he’s been at the job for about 1 year. So he has no clue how everything works. I’ve got people that have been at the company for 5+ years and I’ve been told numerous times that I actually do the job right unlike many before me. The supervisor doesn’t seem to see it that way. I’m not one to complain about work or pretend that my job evaluation is above reproach. But when the micro managing starts to become constant ? That’s when I start to get annoyed. I’ve already tried talking and asked him politely, is there some sort of problem with the way I’m working ? Of course I got a very vague and generalized response. But through the word salad, I’ve noticed something. The supervisor has no issue with anyone else in my department. Just me. Moving me around, changing my job functions all in a supposed attempt to “try something new”. While he leaves everyone else alone. I could go on and on but I’m at a point today where I am ready to resign. I’ve had enough!
Micromanagers just don't get it - people don't work best this way at all. It can be a form of bullying when the micromanaging starts consistently interrupting and speaking for employees too - like they're not even human.
I think doing the work better or getting better results manifests those behaviors...there jealous....so pointing out lame stuff is a way to cause insecurities and take away your confidence because they lack that and leadership
Now short and simple, what a micro-manager really is, from a person with over 20 years of industry experience: 1. Insecure (sometimes it also comes from incompetence - some of them get the job, not because they were the best fit or talented) 2. Power trip (some people get promoted to a senior / management role after many years of being insignificant, and it gets the best of them - depends on their character) 3. Control issues (related to #1, they feel that they "must" maintain total control over everybody they manage, otherwise, it will not end up well for them) 4. Trust issues (related to #1 and #3) thank me later PS: Tip - if your manager is this type, don't think you can change him/her or learn to leave with their abusive behavior. only way to get it better will be to find a way to not be managed by this manager anymore (either and on rare cases - moving inside the company, but in most cases.. switching companies)
First of all, the options you listed, such as when it's time to walk away... is not a viable solution. It's called quitting, and the bully wins. Not effective advice. Period. People have to learn to outsmart these micromanagers who aren't necessarily bosses. Could be a co worker in many cases.I have a coworker who is such a severe micromanager, she calls the police on anyone who says, "Coud you please not be condescending ". Including customers. I am dead serious. Why laws don't exist to protect people from abusive people in the workplace, I don't care anymore. These people are out of control.
I left my last job two months ago, my boss was the owner and the poster child of micromanagement! She was so bad, she'd get mad at you for writing a post it note wrong!! We could only have 4 toilet paper rolls in the bathroom at a time, we weren't allowed to order supplies until we were just about to run out (Which lead to us not having supplies for a couple of days to weeks), One time she didn't let us order a pencil holder for the new girl, but decided to buy 30 Magic Erasers, that no one used for the two years I was there.... She didn't believe us when we told her we were out of thank you cards that get sent to customers, she actually had the nerve to call an employee that left a few months prior, to make sure that the thank you cards were almost depleted. Even though we had a list of customers we gave the cards out to, she didn't believe us. She was out of control! I'm so glad I don't work there anymore! When I started my new job, I had 4 people tell me they wanted to work for my new job. lol Right before I left, I found out, in order to keep people, she'll buy cars or give employees loans, so that they'll stay. If the employee tries to leave, she'll say, I bought you a car and this is how you repay me?!" She pays everyone minimum wage no matter how long they've been there, but she can pay for cars for at-least 5 different people?! Which is also weird because she always had us use our own cars when we met up with clients, but she couldn't get a company car for us to drive, instead of putting miles on our cars?!
rule of thumb: If your boss refuses to let you do things yourself even when your know what you're doing, they are by definition a micromanager. If they want everything to be reported to them, even for trivial and unimportant things, they are also a micromanager
It's really a matter of understanding the psychology of people like this. They are typically very insecure, and sometimes, they exist on the narcissistic spectrum. They crave attention and validation but hardly do anything for success apart from appropriate ideas. They literally have nothing to do.
I know your example of a boss’s boss’s boss talking to you about how you responded to an email was a joke, but that literally happened to me. We had an hour-long meeting about it. The offense? I typed “and” twice in a row by mistake. It was an email to my manager.
I had a boss demand that I tell them when I used the bathroom, because I was in the bathroom one time when she decided to call me on the messenger to go over something
my boss gets on to me about stuff that happened like 2 months ago, and hes like what did u say or do , im like that was 2 months ago, i dont rember what i said 2 months ago, he knit picks me , and nothing is ever good enough, im looking for something else, its like im buring the building down and its small things hes getting on to me about
I have a government department supervisor who is lashing out at the faults of other staff and doesn't take any constuctive criticism well. Wants only to hear the success of they're accomplishments and when issues arise ignores the responsibilities of leadership often passing the buck towards the assistant leadership. -2021
I did everything she said to a 'T', getting ahead with information. And it completely backfired, simply inviting more micromanageing. I know he's stressed by his boss, but this is really out of hand. And the company is suffering because of it.
I am a contractor at my current job and TG there is an end to this ish in 8 weeks. There is a tech there who runs and tattles about EVERYTHING. Then the supervisor comes over and tells you what you did. Example the super comes over and says “ make sure you take out ALL the linen “ another time walks over and says “ make sure you are plugging the machine in and the pumps before you leave “, make sure you put the table in home position every night “. So I finally say “ I am 100 percent sure I plug the machines in and put the table in home position when I leave and she needs to stop lying “ I knew exactly who he was talking about that runs in the office every day and tattles everything and has gotten others written up. I have no idea why this tech is like this but everyone hates working with her and I can’t see how they don’t see SHE is the problem.
I see the micromanaging as coming from two places (at least where I work): 1. A person that's not competent in the disciplines they are managing, was made the manager of a number of mid-to-senior grade employees. But doesn't really know anything about the topics they are supervising. So, in order to subordinate their employees and emphasize "who the boss is" they will fall back to pedantic and trivial ways to show they are in charge. 2. A zero defect mentality and a motivation focused on not "looking bad" (as an organization, directorate, office, etc.) means there will be a focus on process instead of outcomes or results. Put it all together and we have a convoluted staff process that is so paralyzed with double and triple checking every detail, even details that don't matter, that it's hard to even schedule a meeting. (Because the slides that we are told we must have for a meeting are checked by the boss and the bosses boss with revisions that will then need to be checked again... 10 or 15 hours wasted on this just to hold a 40 minute meeting) And it's everyone in the office that receives this "guidance." What could be a really good job has become a terrible one because of this... Oh well... I get paid a LOT, so at least there's that...
Have you had a micromanaging boss? What advice would you add to this video?
Get another job.
I do the job incompleted
He knows what I'm 😳 doing
Then he is getting furious
And I get calmer
This is my game a lousy incompleted job and play like a dumb
I think training is the most important thing. Micromanaging is only a thing when the manager feels the initial training was vastly insufficient.
@@jackwinters5942 dont let it bother you. These people are awful. My bosses are similar. They don't respond to me but have all day to message their friends who get promoted over me.
I’m being micromanaged. There is NO way that I’m going to even try to speak with her. I’m done and have decided to move on!!
Exactly. It gets so ugly. Ppl dont change esp micromanaging boss
Thats right fukem find time to go to school for sumthin lil sis
Sorry to hear it. I'm wondering how long I will last.
i just quit mine today.
No wonder there are so many people who have simply had enough, and leave the workforce as part of the Great Resignation.
completely agree with everything u say
Agree 100%
Hes micromanaging in a bad way. Not all techniques for micromanaging is bad. Youve just had a poor experience with someone ysing the technique badly
It is so annoying when these micromanagers won't let you do your actual job. Then, they complain that this isn't what they expected.
You literally described my manager. Thanks for the articulation 😊
You just said it.
It's such a toxic behavior. I'm glad you were able to escape that environment!
My co workers told me that they heard the manager talk very nastily about me. I was scared to confront her
@@matthewsmith2787 Heck no bro if anything she’s scared of you, you need to confront her if she’s talking crap about you.
Brest advise I’ve read here! I am def. gonna use this, thanks!
Best, not Brest!
Exactly. Okie doke them and carry on.
My boss is quick to write me long paragraph emails. I just reply “noted” and keep it moving. I’m not wasting time or energy
Same situation with me right now....already resigned but still notice period seems tough to deal with this such ppl
You literally just described my boss
my micromanaging boss asks for countless reports and a report about the report that was already reported ....
Wow that sounds intense.
Imagine! I've seen this.
OMG… same here.
Crazy when they get all emotional and defensive about about legitimate pushback - absolutely not the employees job to be their therapist (unless it is 😮).
Big red flag
I am definitely a high autonomy person and you’re right there is a difference between over managing and micromanaging.
Omg u just described me.
Me too micromanaging makes me very angry and only bothers me.
another reason for micromanaging: trying to get rid of someone & looking for every oppty to criticise her work, sometimes deliberately to hurt her morale
Retirement is looking very nice
This would be my coworker. I’ve been there 9 weeks and it’s getting worse each week. She’s fuming not because she can’t piss me off. I am currently there for entertainment purposes only
Plain and simple: my micromanager doesn't trust me and thinks I'm incompetent.
Sounds just like my boss🙄🤦♂️
Happened to me but it was employee. So I tried doing it their way and I failed. My numbers went way down and I was becoming depressed .

Wooooah
Verbatim, happening with me... 🤦♂️
Wow that is my boss verbatim. I'm leaving my job because of how my boss is so toxic.
@@mariekano9730 already serving my notice period... Micromanagers never take feedback... The moment, I gave her my feedback, she asked me to leave...
Wow!! I’m 2 weeks in and going through the exact same situation and I’m certain they will keep her and let me go.
This is 100% my story. I spent 8 months dealing with that shit and it totally drains on you.
The problem also is that micromanaging stems from narcissism and narcissists are never wrong and will snap if told otherwise. Although the sentiment here is good and it’s all very sound advice it doesn’t always work. This is what I’m dealing with currently.
Wow that explains the gaslighting
Day 6 and this lady is the absolute worst. I’ve never had to deal with someone like her. Feeling very discouraged and wanting to leave. Worst part is is I could’ve stayed at my last job if I knew this would happen
I have a toxic micromanaging boss, because it's not a large group my options are limited. I attempted to address the problem but retaliation was the result; in other words it didn't go well. What's worse is when everyone is aware of the problem but no one speaks up.
Classic narcissistic person and their flying monkeys or enablers….
How's it going now
Micromanaging managers or supervisors are more likely being trained to be just that, otherwise they would be afraid that someone will bring it up.
I've been micromanaged to the point where I shut all the way down and stop responding altogether. Whew.
How did this work out for you? I’m in this situation.
I would've handed them the mop
Only effective solution is to quit: walk away.
Bingo!
Summed up well.
Here is the BEST way to deal with a 'Micro-Manager'. Either quit on the spot or give your one days' notice.
Zero explanation. A 'Micro-Manager' can NEVER be reached, period. To think otherwise is to be even more
delusional than the 'Micro-Manager' themselves. Do yourself a favor and leave immediately. If more employees
where to exercise and implement these personal boundaries and tactics, failing companies would have the choice to
either hire proper supervisors or go bankrupt. Cheers.
I'm not dealing with it, I'm simply looking for another job.
Yupppp
What if the whole culture and structure is based on micro management? Sigh
Yes I agree☝️
Don’t know how it’s possible to agree any more.

I think my boss was demoted so she is taking it out on us. She's being picky on things that she hasn't worried about before ... seems unnecessary
I had that for 4 years, it drove me mad. Sadly, my boss wasn’t going to be replaced, and I believe she still works there to this day
I’m new, my boss (one of the company Director) is a micromanager. At the end of the first week he said my ethic is awful (he didnt talk about my performance at all because he hasn’t seen any of my work) and threatened to Fire me the next week. This is the first time I’ve ever received such mean critics, rather than feedback on my performance, and I honestly felt like crying.
Hello, are you still in the job? I just got a new job last week and the same is happening to me :/
@@squeezytuna I've been working at a company for a month and a half and got fired for a minor mistake I made, and I barley get any feedback from him, the only feedback I got was all negative and it was when I was getting fired. No positive feedback from him at all and just pure micromanagement from him. He kinda did me a favor though because that job was just to occupy my time before I start school.
@@ashman749 I'm sorry that happened to you, what was your job?

That happens daily with me
@@matthewsmith2787 sorry to hear that why I left my job it was to Unhealthy for me to keep working dealing with that
My "micromanager" seems to have OCPD and Narcissism.
Manager should be screened for micro-managing and should be resolved once identified.
I hate to say this, but in my experience most micromanagers are women. I don’t know why this is so, but it is true.
You right !!!
and they micromanage WOMEN!!!!
You're right.
All of my previous female supervisors micromanaged us.
absolutely. Nothing gets done and focus on minute details stopping progress and completion of mission. It's called incompetence
That is a sad and tragic reality.
this is my life. to a T.
it can also be a fear on the boss's part of being replaced if i can do his/her job for cheap and more efficiently. my last boss at a small company would do work by hand that could easily be done on a computer. he would take a week to do something that would take me a day. and he took forever to get a computer for me with the required software. and then a month later he lets me go because im not what he expected. he waited after going home time to give notice. im sorry you didn't say anything the whole time and now all of a sudden there is a problem. got another job in a few weeks.
You bring up an excellent point about when your talent and work ethic threatens your boss. I see this not all the time, but frequently.
I'm sorry you had to go through this, but I'm glad you got another job quickly - are you happier in it?
@@JenniferBrick me im never the one to let my boss take a hit like that but some bosses are just paranoid like that.
Micromanaging people is done on the cheap, and companies love it
I work for a female lawyer who micromanages me because she is a narcissist and must win an emotional reaction whenever she wants
Been stuck working under a super micromanager for 4 yrs. Working in government is the worst for trying to escape
I've had two. They were both just control freaks.
My manager basically does the work for me and it pisses me off! I put in my resignation two days ago
Dealing with this now. Told her what I thought but now she's screwing me harder. Micromanagent is suffocating.
I’ve had some micro managers. They are the worst people ever
Great advice Jennifer! Being proactive is one of the best tips. Showing them the work you've done so far or your ideas can put them at ease 👍
Instilling confidence can make a world of a difference!
How's your week starting out my friend?
@@JenniferBrick Yes! Going well actually! I'm discussing an apprenticeship in my field of preference with some employers currently. Hopefully I'll have a new vocation in park management and/or horticulture once the COVID restrictions ease where I am 👍
OMG that is so fricken awesome!! Congrats 👏👏👏👏
@@JenniferBrick Thank you! ❤
My boss is making everyone insane. 3 of the top people want to leave because she can't act like a professional
When a manager gets told how & what to do by an employee they hate that💯%fact micromanager is a weak person.
Thanks for sharing this useful information, I have never heard about the term of Micromanagement.
I hate her...toxic, gossips about all my coworkers. Micromanages everyone to the point She's not doing her own work... I can't take it.
She is a perfectionist. She needs her clones
Great video! I hope to apply it!
My colleague & I had a conversation yesterday about our manager who is petty, nit picking & wants to be in control of everything
Now short and simple, what a micro-manager really is, from a person with over 20 years of industry experience:
1. Insecure (sometimes it also comes from incompetence - some of them get the job, not because they were the best fit or talented)
2. Power trip (some people get promoted to a senior / management role after many years of being insignificant, and it gets the best of them - depends on their character)
3. Control issues (related to #1, they feel that they "must" maintain total control over everybody they manage, otherwise, it will not end up well for them)
4. Trust issues (related to #1 and #3)
thank me later
PS: Tip - if your manager is this type, don't think you can change him/her or learn to leave with their abusive behavior. only way to get it better will be to find a way to not be managed by this manager anymore (either and on rare cases - moving inside the company, but in most cases.. switching companies)
When I started my new job, I had 4 people tell me they wanted to work for my new job. lol
Right before I left, I found out, in order to keep people, she'll buy cars or give employees loans, so that they'll stay. If the employee tries to leave, she'll say, I bought you a car and this is how you repay me?!"
She pays everyone minimum wage no matter how long they've been there, but she can pay for cars for at-least 5 different people?!
Also seriously the absolute worst assholes to deal with on any job people like this destroy great workplaces even bankrupt some of them
My last Civil Service boss was an uber micromanager / toxic boss. I once got an email from her criticising my out of office message!
Im in CS too
Why "Deal" with them? Just move on. THEY aren't going to change, no matter what you do.
We don't have bosses we have employees. If you see your employer as your boss that is where the problem starts.
So basically, you cant do anything to change your boss if they wont listen to you about their micromanaging problem.
Just slow down, start giving them excuses, if you don't work, what will they micromanage.
My boss micromanagement is wholly due to they laziness and not letting me grow autonomy
I’m super high autonomy and my new boss checks if I am meeting KPIs multiple times a day. It feels awful.
my boss gets on to me about stuff that happened like 2 months ago, and hes like what did u say or do , im like that was 2 months ago, i dont rember what i said 2 months ago, he knit picks me , and nothing is ever good enough, im looking for something else, its like im buring the building down and its small things hes getting on to me about
I have a government department supervisor who is lashing out at the faults of other staff and doesn't take any constuctive criticism well. Wants only to hear the success of they're accomplishments and when issues arise ignores the responsibilities of leadership often passing the buck towards the assistant leadership. -2021
What exactly is “overmanaging” ?
Power hungry Boss that wants to feel important And look Good in her boss's and there bosses
What about a manager who says you can't sit on the furniture or takes away your break room?
I see the micromanaging as coming from two places (at least where I work):
10 or 15 hours wasted on this just to hold a 40 minute meeting)
And it's everyone in the office that receives this "guidance."
What could be a really good job has become a terrible one because of this...
Oh well... I get paid a LOT, so at least there's that...
