I had an Icelandic horse. She passed away at the age of 32. I miss her tremendously. She was like riding a flying carpet. So smooth and fast!! She was the smartest horse I've ever dealt with and I've rode a lot of different breeds and was a jockey for 7yrs. She had a lot of heart and can do attitude. I swear she could read my mind sometimes. I feel blessed to have had her in my life but I'm terribly lost without her.

🙋‍♀️. Thanks for sharing this video. I fell in love with them in Colorado. I was introduced to them by an older gentleman whose doctor told him he could no longer ride due to back problems and surgeries. This older gentleman became very depressed until another friend introduced him to the Icelandic breed. He credits them with saving his life, as he can enjoy riding again with no problems for his back. As I age, I see their comfortable gaits and outstanding personalities as big pluses for the mature (😂) rider.

Just got back from my second trip to Iceland and once again fell madly in love with the Icelandic horses. I rode for close to two hours in the pouring rain and didn't even feel the rain. Flying carpet is the closet description I've heard explaining their gaits. Want one so bad, but dang they are hard to find and expensive.

Nowhere near as expensive as practically any other breed and we have owned and showed many different breeds over the decades. All of the 10 facts are absolutely true. We now have three Icelandic's, two sweet geldings who are like classic "bros" in both closeness and energetic play and one gorgeous, brilliant and fearless blue dun mare who is clearly the "alpha female". Here is a brief video of them playing: ruclips.net/video/celztUrrgWE/видео.html
We spent less to purchase and ship our three horses then we have on our racing road/mountain bicycles. There is a wonderful community of breeders and trainers here in Northern California. Laura Benson, a.k.a Lala Boosh is one of them. Here she is featured with Gundmar Peterson as the founders of Knights of Iceland: ruclips.net/video/R0vUx5b6M4M/видео.html

They have great personalities and they are so brave and never spook. So lucky to have discovered the Icelandic breed.

The Norse brought them over from Scandinavia, specifically Norway... to kke the breed pure, they don't allow for any other breeds in Iceland, and if a horse leaves the country, it's never allowed back into prevents diseases. As a Norwegian I grew up riding these back in the late 90's, and 2000's. Also been riding in Iceland, as my partner is Icelandic. They are also the only breed in the world to have 2 more gaits, than the standard 3 most others have, which is due to a gene mutation. Also people forget that back in the day, people where not as big nor as tall as the general population are now due to genetics, and diet, as well as lifestyle. This is backed up by science, and DNA, as well as material evidence such as beds etc.

The word "pony" is a British concept that needs to be scrapped. The Caspian is only 10 hands or 11 hands but is called a horse. The craze for larger horses is just stupid and is linked to British snobbery. By the way, if an able bodied person is unable to mount a horse from the ground without a ladder then the horse is too big, it is as simple as that.
