  • The 1954 Mercedes 300SL has been described as the world's first supercar. I drive one (alongside ex F1 driver, Karl Wendlinger) on the 2023 Mille Miglia to find out.

Fascinating. Wonderful to see Karl Wendlinger looking fit and well. What he didn't mention was that at the very next race after the tragic San Marino Grand Prix in 1994, Monaco, he survived an horrific crash in his Sauber-Mercedes at the chicane where his head hit the barrier leaving unconscious and in a coma for several weeks; his F1 career never recovered, but he went on to be successful in sportscar racing and DTM.

I've met Wendlinger a few times on similar press events. He tries to avoid talking about the accident directly, he knows how lucky he is to have survived this without more severe permanent-injuries. What only a few know: He suffers from very severe constant headaches & tries to reduce them with strong medicine (and suffers from its side effects), has little sense of smell and no sense of taste anymore. Poor guy, but still so humble. In German, he has a very funny but very dry sense of humour.

Indeed great to see him! I did meet his Father AND Grandfather in the late 1990s via my Grandfather during a WW2 German Veteran Meeting, back then i wasn't that much into Cars yet but i will always remember Wendlingers Father taking me and my Father on a short Ride around the Bavarian/Austrian Alps in his BMW M1.
Overall a fantastic Family with Cars and Racing in their Blood. Glad this Video and your Comment made me remember this Childhood Memory!

We rented a 911 (992 Carerra) in Munich and drove over 5 days crossing Alsace, Switzerland, some of northern Italy, and back to Germany (hitting major mountain passes and some amazing roads) to celebrate a big birthday. Probably would not have done this without some inspiration from Harry's Garage and can we say we travelled with some of Harry's tips at top of mind. Cheers all and thanks again !

The owner of the local foreign car dealer from my younger days in the '60s had a 300 SL coupe, he shipped it back to Germany for restoration. I remember sitting in it and shutting the door, it popped my ears, that roof vent was closable in the road cars. Back in the day drivers of SLs and XK-Es would have the doors and rear hatches open as they cruised the Riviera.

In the race after, in Monaco he crashed into the barrier at Nouvelle Chicane and was in a coma for several weeks. ´94 was awful... He never recovered enough to really get back into F1, but had a fine career in sportscars and GT-cars. Seems like a very nice guy.

I once drove 1000 miles on my own (actually, it was about 980 miles), and it nearly fucking killed me. I had to drive back across most of Europe from Slovakia back to England. While I saw a lot of Europe, it took forever. From memory, I started at 11am in the West of Slovakia, drove to Calais, took the Chunnel, and got back to Surrey, and arrived at 10am the next day.
That was in a diesel Peugeot on autobahns with virtually no stops other than 2-hourly cigarette breaks.
It's amazing that these guys could do 1000 miles on dirt roads nearly 100 years ago, without paved autobahns, and poor headlights in the same time.

Pip pip!! Tally Ho!! Supercar, ticks all the boxes The 300 SL featured direct fuel injection, aluminum body panels, a tubular spaceframe chassis, four-wheel independent suspension, and a 161 mph top speed. Even today, those are rare characteristics to find blended into one car. In 1954, they were nothing short of revolutionary.
