Thanks everyone for all your nice comments about our attempt to hike the CWT. Some of you seem interested in my ability to hike this trail at my age. For those of you who feel you are too old I say age isn't an issue. I started hiking my first long distant trail on my 72nd birthday and since then i've hiked over a thousdad miles carrying a full backpack and camping wherever i could. A lot of the trails i did solo. I love being out in remote areas and having to deal with whatever the trail throws at me. The CWT ticks all the boxes for me so I am determined to complete it. I have done a few hikes with the Officially Smashed it Hiking Club this year which Kerry runs and they have all been good fun. Kerry is the perfect tail companion for me as we seem to always agree on what to do next. I will be looking forward to rejoining the trail next year and hope you will follow us again.. Thanks again for your kind words

Completely agree. Im 62 and I play nigh on 200 golf courses each year plus walked the Cleveland Way this year and doing bits of Wales Coastal Path. My only limitation is that I dont do camping as couldnt walk too far with a heavy backpack due to dodgy knees. I find the hardest thing about walking is making sensible decisions when you dont know your limitations.

I love this Steve. So many people think that aging badly is inevitable but it isn’t. When you keep moving and challenging your body, it keeps you young at heart. What’s the saying? Something about you don’t give up playing because you age, you age because you give up playing! Having fun in nature’s playground is the best. Here’s to watching many more of your adventures. ❤

Stalwart effort and good for DoW for giving Steve the companionship that gave him some confidence to have another crack at that trail. Tbf falls of glomarch are a Bstrd section, those sections are the toughest in wet weather, that been said it's all an austere trail and weather forcasts are Bstrd deceitful harlots🙄. 😬😆🙏👍🏼👍🏼

It was so sad that Steve hasn't succeeded twice, through no human fault, to complete this trail, but you are totally right Kerry, it was the safe and responsible decision. To have gone on further would have put your lives and the lives of the MRT in jeopardy. So no matter how hard the decision was, it was the right one. I hope Steve gets to complete this trail in more clement weather. It's a valiant attempt, and I applaud you both for getting that far. Another great series that showed us how hard thru-hiking any trail can be. Being cold, wet, with broken and wet kit is not fun, and whatever the weather, it has to be fun. Thank you so much for documenting this epic hike for us and making sure that Steve is #NotDeadYet. Third time lucky Steve!!!

" we are refreshed, we are energized and we are ready to go"....man Agnes came back to bit you on the bum.. The bog, the ferns the mud, the slippery rocks all looked rough going to me, so that café must have been a gift from the Gods! Nice to get a good nights sleep indoors but a mile down the wrong track would have killed me, I remember hiking in awful conditions down hill with a friend in the lakes and saying to her, that was a mare going down (it was so steep) and so pleased we were not going up, then she checked the map and realised we had missed our turn off and we had to back track for almost half an hour - I took over the map reading after that.... The right decision to bin it after the storm, especially with no guarantee of making the bothy or firewood there to dry off everything but one thing for sure, after killing numerous hiking companions over the years, the oldest one, Steve, is the one you could not kill - What Boy! Cheers Alan

That storm was unseasonably harsh, though it can happen the weather can be lovely at that time.
I've been soaked through and the risk of hypothermia is much higher. Its also possible to get bad colds and so making it to safety made sense.
That's just the luck when your that far north if all goes well vs when it's sketchy.

Good on you, got a question... Why do you wear your gaiters over your overtrousers? Rain runs down your overtrousers, down into your gaiters and into your socks... just a suggestion to wear overtrousers over the top then they are easier to remove when it's not raining...

    • @DrunkOnWanderlust
      @DrunkOnWanderlust  11 месяцев назад

Hello there Carole, ok… my theory was .. as we were wading through knee deep water multiple times a day, the water was always going to soak into our shoes regardless … but if I put the gaiters on the outside… when we were knee deep in bog and mud, it kept the muck off of the rest of me and I could then just rinse the gaiters off or leave them outside my tent rather than trying to clean the over trousers all the time
      🙈🤣 it kinda worked

Hello Kerry, so sorry that you had to turn back, it was for the best, I have had to do it so many times myself, here in the mountains of NZ, but as you said it's better to do it and live, to do it another day. When one is wet through, and the water is squelching between the toes, when the cold wet clothes cling to the skin. then it's time to assess and bail. The weather Gods were 'agin' you, better luck next time. ATB Cheers from the mountains of NZ ☺☺

Well done both, a remarkable achievement to get as far as you did in the worst possible conditions. Think I would have bailed much earlier. Was a good decision to get out when you did, all the same. That walk is on my list but success is so much at the mercy of the weather gods that I am not sure I will want to take the punt. You remained incredibly upbeat in the circumstances, which took you both so far, but mother nature , as always, had the last word on this occasion. This was not a fail, but actually a courageous achievement. Sure you will be back to finish the job in due course. Well done again. Atb.

It's gutting having to call it off but it was 100% the right call once you and your gear get wet. The next step could easily have been hypothermia or a bad fall.. I did a trek similair to this in northern Sweden a few years back, it's very much like Scotland except colder, even in summer. Some stormy weather came in like you had and a lot of people were getting airlifted out by rescue helicopter because they got too wet and cold, with hypothermia and also injuries from slipping on wet rock. You did really well to get as far as you did in those tough conditions.

Really enjoyed the trilogy of vids Kerry, I've got Covid so they've been great to sit back and binge watch. Well done to Steve and yourself for the effort and miles you both put it with all that crappy weather and bad luck, but when the sun shone and those views opened up, wow, what an insanely stunning trail to hike. Steve seems like a good fun hiking partner (apart from the snoring) and nothing looked like it phased either of you, what with all the multiple daily river crossings and the wet gear and socks and tents failing, food rationing.....what an adventure! That's defo one to remember. Bravo :-D Xx

Hi Kerry, I think that this series of videos is the best you have done, most you tubers wouldn't put this out, you have shown when it gets bad hill it can then get worse, the trail, the hills will still be there make sure you are.
You also showed a great deal of responsibility about safety, not just your own but also Steve, you had no dry kit hypothermia KILLS, you said at one point you couldn't grip things, if you can't zip up your coat then you are in a position you will die because you can't function and get warm.
Sorry if this sounds like doom, but it's the hard truth, you had no phone signal, how are you going to call mountain rescue, you're cold and have no manual dexterity how are you going to be able to use a phone, your decision to stop when you did was an honest opinion of your own abilities and limitations.
Personally I'm just glad to see you both home and safe, otherwise what would I watch on RUclips, 😃😃❤️❤️☕️☕️🏕👍
