How to Fly with a Fursuit

  • Short little (hopefully) informative video! Like explained in the video, I was really nervous about flying with Ragtime for the first time to BLFC, and I wish there had been a video like this I could have watched! I briefly go over a couple things you'll want to do.
*NOTE: Wait to pack your suit until the night before you leave for your flight. You want to leave it squished in there for the shortest time possible, especially if you are using vacuum bags. Forgot to say that :)
If you have any other questions, comment below and I"ll do my best to help you out!

    1.Get a bird fursuit
2.Before you do, ask the maker to make the flight feathers extra long
    3.Wear it
    4.Go outside
    5.Fly.

One thing to be careful about when taking your head on the plane with you is when you have electronics in the head, like fans, LEDs etc.
I would (and do) still take it, so I can have an eye on it at all times, but when you arrive at the TSA(/whatever) checkpoints, explain beforehand that you have a costume piece with custom electronics in it with you and what the electronics consist of, so that they know what the things they see in the XRay are. Preferrably carry a battery pack with you so that you can show they all work and aren't just a decoy.
I've found the people then respond totally positively to that. It's a nice break to their usually boring routine! They might give you slightly funny looks and laugh, but hey, isn't making people laugh a part of the reason for fursuiting anyways? ;)

I always fly with Delta, and you're only allowed to bring one carryon. I bring my fursuit head and my purse, saying that the purse has "feminine items," and I'm always allowed to bring it on. I just find it funny when I see the people at the check belt thing's faces like "wow okay she said that loudly." Listen girls go through it, and it's not like I can't get any more weird looks. I'm carrying a giant coyote head for crying out loud!

I'm glad you made this, it is so much more simple than I keep making it out to be lol. I'm flying with my suit to a con for the first time in a little over a week, so it's a bit nerve racking, but hopefully it goes smoothly! Being nervous about flying with a suit is the big reason why I've just drove to every con before now, but I've got to do it eventually!

that's a terrible idea. not only will it be very uncomfortable and potentially hazardous for you, it'll probably also be a security hassle and might be uncomfortable/scary for passengers as well. fursuiting should be kept to safe environments like conventions and places that have been pre-notified of a costuming event

I'm flying with a fursuit for the first time to Megaplex on Thursday and I actually found a good carry on bag for the suit head but what I do is pack her partial shirt in with the head to protect her eyes then pack her underarmor and socks around it to keep her head from moving around and the likes. It definitely depends on the head and the maker. MFL doesn't have a foam backing to the head so it easily lies flat. But again it all depends on the size of the suit and the make of the head. This is actually very similar to how I packed up my partial with the hard back suitcase so I'm glad I've been doing it right XD

I'm debuting Joe Bear at FWA in Atlanta, and my fursuit maker is in South Carolina, who will present my bear to me in Atlanta. I'm super concerned about bringing my new fursuit back on American - thanks for these tips, as I feel a bit more comfortable about flying back to L.A. with Joe Bear

I make use of vacuum bags when flying with my suit, as it allows me to get all of my stuff in 1 checked bag (easier to manage). And while I do have my head as a carry-on, I keep it in a zipped duffel bag, because it's less conspicuous that way (and my head is rather long and thin, so it fits better).

  • @PatriciaSilvaAldaz

Attention : most international flights does only allow one suitcase and one carry-on with an extra SMALL item
you might be allowed to carry your head with you but be sure to ask the company before and tell the security before they ask you while you are in the airport
note: a garment bag is considered as a standard hand baggage item, not as an accessory

About the flying and amount of baggage you can take with you it is important to mention if you are talking about local or international flights. I'm pretty sure that it is not common for an international flights to allow more than 2 pieces of luggage total (one carry in and one for check in). You could get a 2nd bag for check in but you'll usually have to pay extra money for.

now the suit case you put Ragtimes body in looks to large to be carry on, if its a suit case that gets put on underneath the plane or another plane- is there a way to prevent it from getting lost or not? almost every time ive flown my larger case gets lost :0 im flying to fwa this year and me and my friend where thinking using ones persons carries on for all the suit stuff and the others carry on for all are personals.

    • @Reinfoxy

most fullsuits, especially Ragtime, will NOT fit in a carry on. Lost suitcases do happen, but appropriately tag and zip your luggage and everything should be fine.

So I guess the mentioning of flying brought me this question; many full suit designers require a tape body, but what is the best way to have it shipped directly to the designer without risk of damaging it? Due to my occupation, for now, my time for travel is extremely limited and I would not be able to drive it there. Also, would it be better to kind of very carefully break it down into parts and stuff it or leave it all as a whole?

I never flew. But I rode on a Train with a Fursuit twice now. It's about the same way as what you explained here. However I remember the first time I rode a Train with my Fursuit and I had my Fursuit head with me out and has a Carry on bag. I had so many stares and questions about it it wasn't funny XD I was also so paranoid when I had to leave my seat for any reason that I either carried my head with me throughout the cars (To get to the Dinning Car). And instead of putting up in the above storage area I just hugged my fursuit like a Plushie and used the head as Pillow XD I was told though to pack the head up so that it doesn't get squashed. And it works for me :3 Now I am less paranoid with riding a train with my fursuit as I really had nothing to worry about. :3
But at the time it was when I just got my first fursuit and I heard stories on suits being stolen or going missing that it scared me XP

Does the TSA normally search the head? I've gotten bags pulled over for abnormally large laptops and for board games several times, and I've also seen game consoles almost always get pulled over and searched. Since this is something large, odd, and animal shaped I'm wondering if they'd search it. ;p

Oli Azuru due to security risks and the terrorist threat levels increasing id recommend that you don't, plus if you're unluckily in an emergency landing it's going to really constrict you if you need to get out quickly

Wow! Did the partial look like anything special? (electronics, high quality, etc...) or was it just a scam?
