    I have the S4. If you get the old style brush roll for it, it performs MUCH better on carpet. I'm surprised Roborock doesn't know this yet because it would be a great idea to sell them with the old style brush roller already installed in them. It's not a problem with the vacuum, it's because the new style brush roll is too dense and has too many bristles to push through thicker carpets.

      From another review it was also stated that on medium pile and greater the edge detection sensors get confused and the vacuum thinks about to fall into the abyss. This is why the vacuum stops and he had to go in to the app and tell little buddy he was ok and to keep reverse blowing.

    I had a bunch of Neato robot vacuums over the years. When I installed new deep pile carpeting the vacuums could not even move on the carpet. I used my normal vacuum for about a month then I tried the robot on the carpet again. It worked perfectly on that same month old carpet. I think there is something on the surface of new carpets perhaps from the manufacturing of it that cause the wheels to slip. I have a friend who had the same problem with a high end roomba. He had his carpets professionally cleaned and suddenly his robot vac worked fine on the carpet. Just a thought.

    I was having the same problems with the roborock s5 getting stuck on carpeting.
    The remedy for the S5 was to go into the settings menu of the Mi Home app and under vacuum settings turn on carpet mode.
    The S5 has worked flawlessly ever since.

    I have a new Roborock S5 Max. I got it because it was supposed to be specially designed for mopping. IT DOES NOT MOP! It has a "mopping" attachment and a water reservoir, but it doesn't do anything I would call "mopping." At most, it drags a slightly (and I mean SLIGHTLY) damp cloth around the floor. You might call what it does, "dusting," but I don't think you can fairly call it "mopping." It just picks up the little bit of dust that the vacuuming misses. It does not really clean the floors. I'm telling you this because the S4 has the same controls, more suction, and a MUCH smaller price tag. The ONLY thing it is missing is the "mopping" feature -- which is virtually useless anyway. So if you are making a choice of vacuum robots, go for the S4, It is a much better deal.

    • @zerobyte802
      @zerobyte802 4 года назад

      I'd say that mopping is such a different task to vacuuming that a purpose-made bot is going to be the best way to go for that function. It seems to me that there does not yet exist a satisfactory mopping bot. As amazing as Roborock's navigation is, it would suck for mopping IMO purely from the fact that it goes over the same spots so often - leaving wheel tracks in the freshly-mopped areas, etc.

  • @joyjoy534
    @joyjoy534 5 лет назад

    Returned my S5 within a week. Only one-map feature limits this for people who live on single-level dwelling. Do yourself a favor and get one that has multi-floor mapping function as well as detect carpet as no-mop area when using the mob feature. Run time also is very limited for the S series (S4, S5, S6). Got a Deebot Osmo 950 and loving it. I can set it on different floors and it will recognize which map to use and clean accordingly based on which area I have scheduled to clean.

  • @Weeem

    Sounds like the carpet was triggering the cliff sensors if it's blocking light getting into them.
    Same with black/dark carpet. It can confuse the cliff sensors.
    There's a workaround by taping white paper over them, but that's no good if there's a potential fall risk.

  • @michaelgray2793

    It's not the brushes it's the layout of the drive train. The S4 uses the same drive train as the original roborock vacuum when on carpet the torque of the wheels will cause the vacuum body to press down against the carpet making the friction to much and the wheels would loose traction and start spinning out . They fixed this buy moving the laser mapping pod up into the center and reversing the layout of the wheel drive motors mirror opposite of the way it was. This design is the same as the Roombas and this is NOW THE the model S5 and S6. Now when the torque of the wheels pushes into carpet the torque lifts the body of the vacuum up away from the carpet reducing the friction and let's the wheels keep their traction with no spinning out.

    It doesn't seem to have bump sensors around the edge? I think it's using resistance in the drive system alone to decide it's hitting something, which means the thick carpet is being read as hitting an obstacle. If they just turn down the sensitivity, the thing will get stuck against walls. I think it's an unfixable design.

    • @zerobyte802
      @zerobyte802 4 года назад

      The entire front half of the bot is a bumper. It has two edge sensors at the 3 and 9 o'clock positions as well. That having been said, I think it is definitely using the movement resistance as its "I'm stuck" metric. I have a cat tree and its base caused all sorts of confusion for my S4. It did eventually realize that it couldn't go onto the base, and moved on, but seeing it get hung up and derping around for 5 minutes earned the cat tree a no-go box on my map. :)

    I'm VERY new to the robotic vacuum lifestyle. Before hand, I could never afford it and just simply downed how long it would take to clean an average sized room. Recently at work, they marked down one of the ones we carry, the Ecovacs Deebot N79, from it's $279 price tag to $150. I instantly jumped on it, based on a guest's past experience with the same model, it worked well and I have medium pile carpet. The only complaints I had was it took sometimes 10+ minutes from the thing to locate it's charging base, even passing it multiple times! I just got to the point where I would pick it up and place it back on the dock myself. Then there would also be the times where it would "bounce" while going one direction on the carpet and then going the opposite way on the same patch it went smoothly.
    About a week ago, I got a notification from Woot! that there was a sale going on for the Ecovacs Deebot 901, it's much more expensive brother, from it's $400-$450 price tag to $199. I instantly packed up the N79 and bought the 901. The last week with the 901 has been fantastic. It also has LIDAR mapping capabilities and has no issues with low or medium pile carpet. The only gripe I have with this one is that it had "lost" it's location once and it took five minutes before it started back on it's normal routine. However, it seemed that the robot vacuum remembered the virtual boundaries I made for certain locations, but they were all off by 1"-2". I deleted the map and started it again, no issues since.

    How is the tech support/repair system with RoboRock? I had a Shark Ion for just over a year before it started having all kinds of problems (brush roller motor went out, motherboard failure, etc.) Does RoboRock have a repair facility where you can send off your robot and actually get it fixed? Because Shark does not. They will send you a replacement brush and filter maybe and then tell you there's nothing else they can do except offer you a discount on a new one which is a terrible deal. Don't want to run into this problem with another company.

      @zerobyte802 4 года назад

      @@joyjoy534 That's what led me to choose the Roborock S4. To me, LIDAR was a must-have feature. Self-emptying base was a very-much-want feature. The only choices with those two were the i9 (way too expensive) and the Proscenic. Some youtubers are raving about the Proscenic but I just don't trust the brand. It doesn't have a track record of happy owners, and the base for it isn't even in stock anywhere right now anyway thanks to the Covid-related trade interruptions with China. Plus the base seems to not work very well compared to the others on the market. The Shark pro has seemed like a well-performing, affordable alternative, and I loved the bagless design of the base, but it doesn't have Lidar and something tells me that it's more cheaply-made than Roborock, Roomba, and Neeto.
