- What made this Buick V6 powered Jeep CJ5 the hottest CJ of them all? And how did Kaiser / Jeep get the Buick V6 assembly line in 1967 - only to give it back to Buick in 1974? It’s all in this video.

That Buick V6 had a long life until 2008 when production was stopped. That Buick V6 was carbureted, fuel injected, turbo charged, supercharged, rwd, 4x4, and fwd. It his a very long history.

Had a 70 CJ with the 225 Dauntless. When I first got it it always felt like it had a small miss. Did the normal tuneup stuff, plugs wires points rebuilt carb to no avail. One day it just popped into my head that it’s a odd fire V-6. Moved the distributor to the right spot and it ran like a champ.’
I didn't realize that they had V6 Buick engine. Nice bit of history! I love the Steve Mags classroom. Coolest classroom anywhere.
The 231 was the first engine I seized. At sixteen I ran the engine low on oil in my 76 Skylark and somehow managed to shoot a piston ring through the oil pan. Panicked and drove home a few miles leaving a trail of oil until the engine seized at the end of my road.
This classroom holds my attention a lot better than any I’ve known in the past.

Thank you for making this video and being supportive of AMC jeeps . I own a 1980 CJ5 and what’s left of a 1973 CJ5 that is in dry dock for frame repair and a complete tub rebuild . If I didn’t sell the v6 231 I had from an ‘85 cutlass , I would have put it in my 1980 instead of the 258 I got from a CJ 7 , but I did get it with its T5 5 speed 👍 , so that was worth it . I remember way back when you did the junkyard crawl with Car Craft magazine back in the ‘90’s . You always had the hard core info down and dirty . Glad I found your channel . I learned how to drive a manual transmission in the 1969 Jeep CJ-5 that my Dad bought from the original owner. It had 8000 pound Ramsey Power take off winch and a Warn Overdrive. But the coolest thing for the then 17 year old me was for whatever reason the original owner had put in the dash an altimeter out of a P B Y Catalina Flying boat. That Jeep had the Buick 225 V-6. My friends and I drove the wheels of that thing.
I gotta add that the 225 Buick fitted with headers and glass packs (added by the Warn Overdrive which was a no-brained to bolt on the back of the Dana-Spicer Model 18 transfer case, making the 3-speed a wonderfully useful 6-speed!) makes the sound of pure music hanging out above 4 grand up long mountain grades. I had a 59 Willies CJ5. It had a Buick 225 in it. Somebody made it in a junkyard. It had Power steering power brakes and a automatic transmission.

I had a 1963 special with the 215. It was a screamer. 50 mph in 1st gear.
I’ve got a 225 in my 1970 jeepster and LOVE IT! Hotter cam and an offenhouser intake manifold, holly 4bbl. It’s reliable, efficient, loves to rev and feels roudy. I’ve put on about 100,000!! Love love love
I've had the 225 & 258 Jeeps and I really liked the 225 V6 much more than the I-6. I had the aftermarket Warn overdrive too, and couldn't imagine driving without it, between low and high range you had 12 forward gears with the T86 3spd.
I had a 71 with the "Dauntless" V6, really wish I had this one now. Of all the Jeeps I have had it was my favorite.

We had a Jeep with the 225 in it. It was a great little engine as long as you don't over rev it. I thought when AMC lengthened the chassis it did so so that the AMC 6 would fit.
you are correct, it was for the straight six. Although the 304 is almost just as long with the timing cover and mech fan.

I owned both the 304, 1972 and the Dauntless 1971 225 V-6. The V-6 did not even compare to the V-8 in stock or bumped up versions. The V-6 was a huge leap for highway driving but 70 to 80 MPH is was overboard for any CJ-5. Off road I’ll take the F-Head any day of the week. I have driven and owned Jeeps since 1962 including several 1943, 1947 and 1952 Wagons, Pick Ups and CJ series. The 232 in-line is a forever engine. Mine got 24 MPG on the highway with unlocked hubs. A good friend had a 1967 Tuxedo-Park model brand new. SWEET! Or as the babies say now SICK!

The 225 Dauntless is a good engine. I got one in my 1946 CJ2A. Mine was out of a 1964 Buick Special.
Great video. I have a friend who has a jeep pickup with a factory installed Buick 350 v8. Till the AMC block came out, that was their big power
The 225 V6 was first available in the CJ5 in late 65 and was used until 71. Disc Brakes were introduced in 77 on CJ's The weight difference between the 304 and 225 is more like 200 lbs . The F4-134 four cylinder that was standard in the CJ's was rated at 74 hp.

Sorry Steve, I had a 1968 CJ5 with a V6 in 1971. It was a slug. That V6 screamed at 55 mph. Third gear in low range top speed was 15 MPH. I don't know what the gearing was, however. I traded it in on a 1972 with the 304. I got it in April and the service manager told me it was the fastest V8 to come through that dealership and if I wasn't careful I'd kill myself in it. I ordered the 3.73 posi rear axle and it was a beast. The speedometer only reads up to 90, but I took it to the far end of the fuel gauge past the "E". Only lost to two cars, a 440 Mopar and a 396 Chevelle.
I love the super rare pine tree hood ornament. Must be a special order item.

Had a 68 with the v-6 when I was 16 in 1977. Five years ago felt the need to get another, it's a 71. Just picked up two more so that I can always keep one or two on the road. Love the short wheelbase cj5's.
I had a 231 v 6 in my 1981 Cutlass. My first car. Bought it with 79-k for $2800 bucks in 1987.
really fascinating! when i was a mechanic i recall seeing the re-born buick v6 in late 70s full size buicks and they were dogs with poor gas mileage; presumably because one had to keep their foot in it just to stay with traffic.
Way under powered for big cars....i remember the '76 LeSabre's with that motor...they were land yachts...2 12 tons with 105 hp

i was a jeep cj5 nut in my 20s. i put in a chevy 350. t18 ford truck trans with anvanced adapers kit. detroit locker in rear. drove it for 10 years. i remember channel 5 in boston had station comercial driving a cj5 with a big number 5 in the back seat

I literally just picked up my Dauntless 225 for my 68 jeepster commando yesterday from the machine shop. Bored it 30 over. now getting the chassis ready for paint and all new rubbers and glass. Hoping to have it finished by the end of the month. Great video.

My 76 CJ5 used to belong to my late grandfather and it still runs strong on the original 258 straight six. That "little" straight six being only 2 cubes away from the Oldsmobile and Ford 260 V8's makes it a super powerful little motor for it's size. My dad moved a mobile home with it once back in the 80's and I haven't found a hill yet that will make it stall out idling in gear.
Had a 1952 willys with a Buick 252 v6. That thing would go almost anywhere.
I had a Commando with the Buick motor too bad it rusted out so bad loved it drove it everywhere cool stuff!

The v-6 was introduced in the 1966 model year. I have one that was manufactured in Sept. of 65

The 225 Dauntless Buick V6 Oddfire is a great little motor, they produce plenty of power and will last forever if maintained properly...I grew up watchin my Dad beat up on chevy small blocks with his 1970 Kaiser Cj5 Renegade I when he'd race em up Competition Hill (Idiot Hill) at Pismo Beach, Calif in the late 70's/early 80's....he was runnin the 225 Dauntless Buick .060 over and I believe a small Carter 4bbl (not 100% sure on that though) 3.88 posi Dana 35 front and Dana 44 rear w/Henry floating axles, 3spd w/the manual Warn Overdrive, open headers....my brother inherited it this past Aug after my Dad passed unexpectedly (I inherited a 1974 Bronco w/a 347 stroker) and is now restoring that Jeep....I own 2 Jeeps, a 44 Ford GP w/a 289 K-Code, and an 85 AMC Cj7 that will have a Ford Coyote motor one day soon I hope....
Great memories! Sorry you lost your Dad. He sounds like a hot s*it! He may well have run a small Carter AFB on that "little" 225. I once found an AFB with tiny throttle bores that was just 400 cfm! I used it on a Slant Six...

I didn't know the backstory at all of the Buick v6. And the nail head aluminum V8 was very similar to the v6, Olds had a different version. I'm also very familiar with the Buick Grand National v6, and the whole story starting in 1978. My mother ordered a brand new Grand Prix in 1979, and I looked at the Buick brochures and cars on the lot extensively, then one day the Buick Grand National was the king of the hill, but I had followed it from the previous 10 model years

That's because he deals with 76+ CJ's and no V6 by that point. He did buy two early CJ5s on an episode of coffee walk, they have sat on the side of his lot untouched since that episode.

I had a 79 CJ-5 with the straight 6 and manual trans in College mid eighties. I had so much fun with "Jerry" up in Michigan! Love the old Jeeps, but they're so much money now...yeeesh 💰
I had a new 1976 CJ5 Renegade and with the 304 3 speed. They came with a 11 gallon gas tank. It got 10mpg so I had to stop and fill up every 100 miles to fill up while driving on the highway.

Another excellent video! Every thing said about the 304 is true but one thing to keep in mind is that all amc v8’s are the same block so a 390 or 401 swap is a easy drop in.
It’s a classroom yes , but it needs a good teacher like you. I drove one of those early v6 Cj 5 many years ago. They were a little scary on some highway curves but they had plenty of get up and go and good for plowing back then

I’m pretty sure that Holden used this engine in the ‘90’s in 3.8 litre Commodores, it was criticised at the time for being rough running compared to Japanese V6’s.
