Watched it a few times. It's worth watching. There are clever ideas, it gets you involved, some funny moments that don't detract from the seriousness of the story. The special effects are kept to a minimum which is okay because they're not that good.
Another film I'd recommend too is K-Pax.

k-pax is a good one, there is also an anime called "to your eternity," which reminds me of starman and I wonder if the author got some of his ideas from this because it deals with an orb that comes to earth and starts cloning itself based on what it encounters (the first episode is really good but can be emotionally devasting).
