- "The Making of The Thing" is a captivating and immersive documentary that peels back the layers of one of the most legendary and enigmatic horror films in cinematic history, John Carpenter's "The Thing" (1982).
This documentary invites viewers to journey back in time to the early 1980s, a period when practical effects and suspense-driven storytelling reigned supreme in the horror genre. Through a combination of rare archival footage, exclusive interviews with the cast and crew, and behind-the-scenes materials that have remained hidden for decades, "The Making of The Thing" provides an intimate and illuminating exploration of the film's creation.
The journey begins by revisiting the origins of "The Thing" as a remake of the 1951 classic "The Thing from Another World" and the decision to take the story back to its source material, John W. Campbell Jr.'s novella "Who Goes There?" With Carpenter at the helm, the documentary delves into the director's vision of paranoia and isolation in the remote Antarctic setting.
Audiences are treated to in-depth interviews with key players, including Kurt Russell, Wilford Brimley, and John Carpenter himself, who share their experiences working on the film. They discuss the challenges of portraying fear and distrust among a close-knit group of characters and the intense camaraderie that developed during the shoot.
"The Making of The Thing" also delves into the groundbreaking practical effects work of Rob Bottin, whose grotesque and imaginative creature designs continue to astonish audiences to this day. The documentary explores the meticulous craftsmanship behind the film's iconic transformations and the risks taken to achieve such stunning and terrifying visuals.
As the narrative unfolds, viewers are transported behind the scenes of the film's remote set in British Columbia, where the cast and crew faced the harsh elements and the difficulties of shooting in subzero temperatures. The documentary captures the dedication and determination of everyone involved, showcasing the collaborative effort required to bring Carpenter's chilling vision to life.
The film's release and initial reception are also explored, highlighting the mixed critical reviews and the subsequent rise of "The Thing" to cult status. "The Making of The Thing" examines how the film's intricate storytelling and practical effects have continued to influence and inspire generations of horror filmmakers.
In the end, "The Making of The Thing" is a thrilling and intimate tribute to a timeless masterpiece of horror cinema. It provides an inside look at the enduring legacy of "The Thing" and its lasting impact on the genre, cementing its place in the pantheon of cinematic classics.
This documentary promises fans and cinephiles an unprecedented journey into the heart of the Antarctic terrors and creative genius that made "The Thing" a landmark in horror cinema.
The prequel has shown that Robs practical effects will NEVER be beaten. The OG movie is absolutely amazing.
All practical effects were done in 2011 then studio wanted them CGI. They need to release the original version.
The OG movwas made in the 1950s? This was the first remake. There was a second remake later. As far as I remember.
Some of us; like me, could feel how special the movie was when it came out, and we still appreciate how great it is even now. Visceral, terrifying, and emmersive. I didn't quite understand why people took so long to see how entertaining it was.
Just an absolute masterpiece
I was 14 when it me out and saw it the day it opened with a gang of friends in London, and we all loved it. However, the critics were very unkind at the time: one reviewer said “Feels like a crude remake of ALIEN, right down to the ritual chestburster scene.” It was only three years since that had come out. The characters were also dismissed as one-dimensional, and the writing corny. The ironic tone of the film was not properly appreciated until the following decade.
I agree. I loved it💯 when it first came out And still do.
@jonathanmelia I agree with everything you said. It was great from the beginning. I was 12. Oh, how times have changed, on both sides of the pond.
@@jonathanmeliaSir were the British critics harsh to it as well at that time?
The Thing is a masterpiece.
Yep
Jep
So true
I have watched this movie I know, at least 50 times, at the very least. The truth is the SOUNDTRACK has as much to do with the horror/tension more than we think. It's perfect. The monsters, without that CGI bullshit are so realistic. The actors are ALL masters. One of my all time favorite movies. Thank you!!!!
Which movie was that Ennio Morricone made the soundtrack to? Was ot this one? I know Carpenter did his own music in Escape From New York.
@mikaelbiilmann6826 I know he did some Clint Eastwood movies...?
@@ToddDavis-p3u Back To The Future 3.
@mikaelbiilmann6826 OH yeah. Those are great!! I forget the Italian (I think) composer who created the Bram Stokers Dracula soundtrack but that one was a monster! Pun intended.Haha.
This and Alien! Both in first place for me. The effort and work put into these movies is incredible
They are very similar movies, I love Alien, but personally i think The Thing just pips it.
Plus the cinematography was really good. I think the dp did some other big movies…
All of the fx in this movie are so amazing and creative. None of the CGI crap today even comes close to this.
Well said.
Yes, done by a very young and talented man. 😅 Stan Winston did the first dog pen scene of the changed dog on the floor.
Although his contribution ended up being somewhat minor, Morricone's score was positively haunting & is as much a character in this version as any of the actors. 👍🏽👍🏽
Wasn't it John carpenter's music, score?
"I know you gentlemen have been through a lot...but if you dont mind, I'd rather not spend all winter TIED TO THIS ******* COUCH!"
An absolute highlight 😂👍
Rob Bottin is something else. He was in his early 20s….. insane
So great to see this again. Not all of the "behind the film", "making of a film" etc are nearly as enjoyable as this one. Nowadays, every film has endless footage shot of everyone involved in the making of it. And it's often even released right after the movie itself. Certainly enjoyable but really meaningless as compared to this one on John Carpenter's Magnum Opus. Year after year numerous films are released that often win many awards and gain accolades from the critics to the max. All of that is just a standard recipe in promoting a film. How many of these are actually ever even watched again the following years, decades and generations? "The Thing" is an example of the enduring masterpiece.
the best film of all time in my opinion...gets better every time you watch it.
It’s hard to argue. It’s in my top 3.
One of the greatest sci fi horror movies ever made. Great upload buddy 👍🏻
After what Alien had achieved, John Carpenter's The Thing was a big step further in how the isolated human ensemble fighting the alien monster became so captivating for many audiences.
The THING is a true masterpiece of the psychological horror genre.. thanks to every person involved for blowing my mind at such a young age. Will never forget watching that in my buddys basement with a stack of other vhs.. pumpkinhead.. hellraiser.. what a wonderful time that was
You should have seen it in the movie theater. It was even better there.
I remember queuing up to see this movie with the majority of my schoolmates, not legally old enough but our local cinema needed the income, still my favourite horror sci-fi to this day, simply blown away with every aspect, the effects, tension and paranoia culminating in a complete motion picture event
„You know“

It's amazing how many variations of expressions the English language has. 👏🏻
When you listen to this documentary you come to realize why this is such a great movie, none of this would would ever happen today to make a movie.
A superb sci-fi horror film and amazing film score by Ennio Morricone, in my top ten .
Acho que a trilha sonora não é do Morricone, mas do próprio diretor Carpenter.
I think you're right @@rogeriovillela
It's hard to believe that THIS MOVIE BOMBED ON RELEASE IN 1982
BUT HAS GONE ON TO BE ONE OF MOVIELANDS ALL TIME GREATS,SOME PEOPLE BELIEVE IT IS THE GREATEST HORROR MOVIES EVER MADE;
🗣️😏"WELL IT AGRUEBLE COULD BE !
It’s definitely right up there. The practical effects are incredible and plus it’s Kurt Russell 👍👍
I mean it came out at the same time as E.T. and Blade Runner. It never had a chance. But this kind of movies are so good that they will get a fan base that is loyal and there all the way.
@@borntowatchpodcastRussell made such good movies: Escape From New York, The Thing, Soldier, Tombstone.
One of the things (no pun intended) that I never noticed about the movie theme is its Lovecraftian cosmic horror that it beautifully resonates throughout. Masterfully done.
Sci-fi films like The Thing and Blade Runner that find their much deserved acclaim over time, even without box office success to begin with, can be particularly most fascinating.
GOAT film... GOAT making of... GOAT commentary... ❤.
Hard to argue with any of that 👍
Fantastic movie. I saw it twice at the cinema. I will always remember on the second viewing sitting back and watching the entire audience jump as one during the blood test scene 😆
Nail biting, spine tingling, very raw and real depictions of what ifs that you just don’t get these days. Watching this as a kid this movie and just the idea of something other worldly unknown taking you over and imitating you or someone close litterlly made my skin crawl. Also the Norris scene was really a Head of its time!
It’s great to learn about old time special effects movies and how they made them. No cgi in those days.
Awesome, Greetings from Helsinki, Finland🇫🇮🇺🇸🇫🇮🇺🇸
the single most greatest horror movie ever made on the Earth 🌎 ☄️ needs a two-part sequel ❤
I don't even like horror movies, yet this is one of the best movies i've ever seen.
John Carpenter, never fails to light up a cigarette 😂
does he on the blu ray releases or are they edited out..?
An amazing piece of artwork. Heck, like every other person’s said a masterpiece. The amount of stuff these guys went through
Rob Bottin is a legend.
This Robocop and Total Recall the man was awesome....
Best cosmic horror movie of all time not even close
Not just that. One of the best MOVIES of all time 👍👍
It radiates what movie making is all about.
The Thing, Escape from New York, and They Live are really quite good. I've seen some of Carpenter's other films but these 3 are for me the most memorable. Halloween was good too but I don't love it quite as much.
John Carpenter's at 1:21:30 "the lack of trust that's in the world now, we see it all over countries people we don't trust each other anymore we don't know who to trust." Thats the meaning of "the thing" for me. The only movie i watched over 50 times since it came out in 1982.
Watched ot a couple of times the last couple of months. There are 3 or 4 commentary tracks, which is always fun and informative. Love this movie as well as Escape From New York.
What worked about "The Thing" is that the cast was all men. So when all hell broke loose it was "Every man for himself!" instead of men scrambling to save their sweethearts. It also mirrored the film "12 Angry Men" beautifully.
Without a doubt this sci-fi horror movie revolutionized special effects, music themes and fiction verses non fiction, the movie is better than the book. And I was mesmerized while watching. You got to give credit to the origin of comic books and magazines that set the standards of certain movie themes and to bring them to Realism is incredible, exciting and always evolving.....gg, Tampa Florida
When Bottin tells the story of how he was ill after all the hours and Carpenter says take this guy to the hospital…I gotta say if it was that bad why didn’t someone say something sooner OR if they did force him to go…I feel that it is sad that he was left to get on with it until the end and he wasn’t required any more…but damn a bloody good film!
still fantastic today.
'nobody trusts anyone now, we're all very tired'
Bottin is great. Seems like just a regular young guy, a bit goofy and offbeat maybe, and you'd hardly believe he's the master behind these mindblowing transformation effects.
Still one of the best films ever made!!!
This documentary is excellent, adding more substance and detail to an amazing movie.
Thanks for uploading this, cheers.
It’s a masterpiece of a film. The doco only adds to the brilliance. The practical effects 😳😳
@@borntowatchpodcast
Yes, indeed the movie and documentary would make a great double feature.
Classic movie
1982 was a great year for sci-fi movie classics.
The Thing
E.T.: The Extraterrestrial
Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan
Blade Runner
TRON
The Dark Crystal
Rob is a genius , along with Carpenter believing in him , it still cant be beaten now with all the cgi and money
A mashup of personal interest interviews? What about describing the technical issues and processes of mechanically making the movie?
Weird how excellent this movie is yet it’s somewhat slipped into obscurity. I think, in part, because of the intensity of Rob’s effects. It should really be worked into more rotation.
I saw The Thing on first release in a theater which had five people in it. I absolutely hated it. The defibrillator scene broke me at the time. It has taken me years to come to an appreciation of this film and the things it does. I still think the characters are thin, but I love the sense of paranoia the film creates. Kurt Russell delivers on a great performance.
jealous of being able to see it in the theatre
characters thin...? it's a short film, not even 2hrs in length..
Sir why do you feel the characters are thin? There wasn’t much time to explore backstories etc
@@borntowatchpodcast it's so amazing how they were able to make things like alien creatures and ships without using any C G I technology of course it wasn't invented at that time I'm sure creating these took hours but worth the efforts put in now years after a video game The Thing was made we see Blake is going to be dealing with this alien species in harsh weather conditions .
may Carpenters work continue on in
future horror projects .
Pre CGI and will never be bettered, wonderful film.
The method of generating a cold atmosphere (31:15) whilst in a hot, humid enviroment sounds familiar. I once worked in an ice cream factory (Kiwi Ice Cream) in temperatures of -25°C for 2-3 hours; then step outside to +25°C into New Zealand's hot, humid Bay of Plenty summer enviroment. Quite a shock to the human body! 🇳🇿🦎🍦☀️🌴🌊
amazinggggggggggggggggggg, again!!!!!!!!!!!! thank goodness i just stumbled on your channel!!! google algo was good to me today!!!!!!!!
Yeah, occasionally Google gets it right 😂😂
Howling is too classic
26 WHEN IT CAME OUT! BIG FAN OF THE OG!
Critics back in the day were grossed out. Roger Ebertl thought it was disgusting trash. But Gene Siskel said the story was intriguing and well made.
この映画は日本でも人気ですよ。とても面白かった
The Blair thing was building his escape ship, the generator is gone. The thing took the generator to complete its ship
Belíssimo filme, great movie, ótimo filme, ...
The thing was trying to bring food for his escape then it realized that they exploded his ship and came back and attacked mccready
Man, I saw It In cinema. When it came out. Did not sleep well for some days afterwards 😅
Saw it when i was 12 in our old village cinema. The cinema owner didn't took it too literally. Wicked, awesome horror trip.
Blair then kills nauls and the other guy. They weren't converted. That's why Blair dragged him by the face
The Thing dislikes this.
I made a song as a tribute to the thing in my twenties, but ive never released it/put it on youtube etc because it has some samples, and i think copyright would be a problem.
Maybe ill post it to Mr Carpenter.
I LOVE THE 1950'S VERSION, but 82's my favorite, THUS FAR. The monsters in this film have not been Out Done (YET, if ever) . There's a Sci-fi Horror movie a few years ago called the VOID, and it SORTA sorta sorta reminds me of the THING, matter of fact ,whenever i talk about it ,to those that haven't seen it, i tell them it's a cross between EVENT HORIZON & THE THING !!!
13:15 try this now and wait for the reactions :D
the thumping bass notes are the movie. personally this is the only movie that I like Kurt Russell in.
Neither of them were the thing. Pay attention. The dog thing escaped, that was the thing that imitated Blair. It creates the escape ship.
Are you in Amsterdam or something?
Great.
I prefer the original. (Yes, I know I'm in the minority there).
Child's put on the jacket. Then we t to chase blair
이게 메이킹이야? 두시간영상 무슨 사람 인터뷰만 나오노 ㅋㅋ
The one thing i dont like about thing is the actual building itself - its cheap. Tho it works for the story its eh
Im also rlly glad it stopped playing that high pitched music at the beginning of this!
Genial horror movie The Thing needs a remake with deleted scenes !!!
🗣️😏Tops as alwsys
The world is after me ....
" game over Whitley . "
" I don't think so I control you
right now I control every man on this continent your sabotage at the air strip only delayed the enviable there is an evac team on it's way to this location once it gets here I will begin global infection game over ha ha ha this game is just beginning . "
John Carpenter's film for me was a major disappointment . A narrative in which people slowly change into monsters after getting " infected " is too easy , trite , and phoning it in . I wanted to see disturbing transformations , violent bloody attacks , and something that would make my eyes pop out . All of that stuff they talk about like " paranoia " would be there , but enhanced by a shocker of a horror film . The prequel released in 2011 seemed to try for this , but alas the prequel was too short , and the producers didn't go all in with the movie .
I'm glad I have seen and enjoyed the movie several times before having to listen to the long haired dude talk about the movie. I left halfway through bc I just tired of his voice.
It says the making of the thing but to me is all talk and no making
Then you weren't paying attention
did he seriously blame ET for it flopping? lmao. Thats a stretch. I think its just too slow & serious. maybe too testosterone driven with no female element. half the world is female & Alien just gave us a kickass one. nobody has ever had a problem with monster aliens. ET didnt make us think all aliens were cute & cuddly! Maybe kids but The Thing was not for kids.
Overrated movie...
Why sir?
I see you're trolling again.
@@southlondon86 Because the SFX Were so cheap, actor Were not so good, script was MEH.
@@fab92n15 SFX were the best for the time. What specifically was bad about the acting?
You are entitled to your opinion and many fans globally disagree with you.
I wish love to find out who wrote the score for the movie. That score was, in my view, as fantastic as the movie itself. It highlighted/ amplified the dread I felt throughout the film. In my view, it was an excellent score.
Best sci fi / horror film ever made...
When i first watched this movie i always had a creepy feeling that the spider head was under my bed.
