    According to rumours, Nattramn was institutionalised at Sankt Sigfrids sjukhus (which translates to English as "Sankt Sigfrid's Hospital" and is a psychiatric hospital located in the city Växjö) soon after the release of Silencer's Death - Pierce Me album. The band split up supposedly because Nattramn was institutionalised.
    He made a dark ambient album 6 years after this, i don't have it personally but I heard from others that in the booklet he said he made that album out of some sort of rehabilitation and that he thanked the staff of the psychiatric ward in the credits

    Yeah you hit the nail on the head with these types of bands being young. A huge portion of bands that are widely considered influential black metal nowadays started out as edgy teens. Bands like Mayhem used to self-harm onstage in their early days, they all had this obsession with death and suicidal thoughts and some of them took it 100% seriously while others didn't. Black metal back then was all about being against whatever was mainstream and to be the furthest thing from what was considered "normal" by the rest of society, and that's also how extreme ideologies like antisemitism made its way into the genre. And again, there were people who took that seriously and still think that way to this day (Burzum for example) while others were just session musicians or tolerated it but after a while were able to get away from it. Because of how small the black metal scene was when it first started out, even the black metal musicians you would least expect to be involved in that stuff can still be linked to it if they were making music in the 90's.
    I think Silencer were serious about the music in this album, but with just enough ridiculousness that it got people to wonder if they were so extreme that it was a joke. There were plenty of rumors surrounding this band too, when I was introduced to them I was told that the vocalist cut off his hands while recording the vocals and sewed on pig's feet in their place. It turns out that wasn't true. After that, there was another rumor that the vocalist self-harmed while recording vocals to make them sound that way, and that one hasn't exactly been proven or disproven. There's another that the vocalist was admitted to a psychiatric hospital. As someone else commented, it's very creepypasta-like. That kind of mysteriousness surrounding the band was a selling point for a lot of people back in the day, including for me when I was a teenager. It made the vocals feel a lot more horrifying than they actually are... nowadays I think it sounds a bit silly. But because I grew up listening to this album, I still like the songs and still feel the emotion in it. This song is the catchiest one on the album and I think that's why it was picked as your introduction to them.

    • @patrickbertlein4626
      @patrickbertlein4626 Год назад

      Ugh, this comment, along with your name, just reeks of being pretentious. Antisemitism was BARELY relevant to the early Black metal days, you know nothing about the genre if you think this. Crap you at least could have included the Dark Throne quote instead of simply using one example to illustrate a point, talk about amateur level. And it wasn't simply "edgy kids", which is nothing more than again, a pretentious way of dismissing something that you don't "get". That's cool you liked it when you were young and yes, I can get why the genre seems silly to some, but I also get, as someone whose been part of it for decades, why people like you and your quite ignorant views are bothersome. Black metal is the closest thing to religious music in the metal genre, no not Batushka, its not simply entertainment or being "edgy" but a way of perceiving and existing within the world. Listen to Reinkaos from Dissection for a great example of this, and yes I believe Jon had severe mental issues but he also truly was a religious figure within the scene.
      Also many of these people have genuine mental health issues (could be the things are tied together), so saying a mentally unfit person is just being "edgy" is kind of a dick move.
      Being guilty by association is just dumb. You said it yourself, one of the few things you got right, that the scene was small, but you took the wrong message from that which was simply that is just a consequence of their being so few people in general in the overall scene. You also completely missed how the biggest bands at the time were also Sigh, Von, Sarcofago, and a number of other bands that not only were not European, but were not white. Sorry man but I think you are a product of your times and need to think a bit deeper about these things before making a fool of yourself.

    • @ProgPro96
      @ProgPro96 Год назад +3

      @@patrickbertlein4626 I explained pretty clearly in my comment that some musicians who had connections to antisemitism in the 90's were there due to the scene being small. I also know about the influence bands like Sarcofago and Mystifier had on black metal. I've been part of the scene for decades too and pretending that antisemitism is barely relevant to early black metal is delusional lmao. It is possible to enjoy someone's music and still look at things factually, we don't have to act like they're all saints.

      I don't really have a way of proving it, but the way I understand it played out is that Nattram plagiarized his brother's work (no idea who is he though) and that all the self-mutilation rumours were made up by him, however, it's true that he was in a mental institution. What I can't remember is the cause or if he self-institutionalized or if his friends/family did it.

    I can't believe you finally got to Silencer!!!! When I first heard this album, I had listened to black metal and other extreme genres for a decade and some change already, and was in a black metal band. I couldn't listen to them. I Just couldn't handle listening to the vocals. After many attempts, I finally got to this odd turning point, where I started laughing to the point of TEARS. I started getting enjoyment out of it, and wasn't repulsed by the sound. Then, I got to where I enjoyed the vocals. I had to bend my mind to it's will - try to become the music, and see from it's own perspective, why it feels the way it does. If I could distort my mental state into something resembling a similar wavelength, I could enjoy it.... and I did! I still have a bit of a giggle at some parts in particular, but for the most part, I'm able to get the intended feeling the band wished to impart.

    Fucking finally, Silencer! Instant like -> will be editing this once I've watched the reaction.
    Edit: Okay, I disagree with the track choice on this one - it's indeed hard to take seriously with those spoken lines etc. thrown in. The title track, Death - Pierce Me is a much better representation of what Silencer is about (at least for me). Going in, knowing that the vocalist Nattram inflicted self-harm to "get in the mood" for recording the vocals just gives that little bit of extra to an already dark track.
    Some people find the vocals funny and/or unbearable and, well, that's to be expected I guess. Sometimes, when in a dark place, I really like to put on Silencer and blast it in my headphones in a dark room. It's weirdly... cleansing? But yeah, definitely not for everybody.

    I've been wondering how you would react to this sort of black metal but wasn't sure if you'd actually reach Silencer specifically. It definitely shakes you up even when you've gotten used to regular black metal. I'm deep into the rabbit hole of unusual extreme metal and I love this band because of how goddamn strong it is expressively, reaching an area of being outlandish in its' extremity in sound, image and lyrics, while still being palatable. After I've desensitised myself to a lot of harsh and emotional music this band's limited repertoire keeps on giving me the rush I need. I listen either to this or a couple other depressive black metal bands every day I go to university and it brightens up my day ironically enough. I know that these bands likely didn't intend their songs to cheer anybody up, but somehow they do it for me. The disgusting/horrifying lyrics don't repel me either. I don't want to sound like some special snowflake, I actually think my music taste might be a bit broken lmao
    Edit: The title track Death: Pierce Me would've been imo a better starting point as it's longer, more varied, very well composed imo and doesn't have this shift in tone, which you're right is inappropriate and feels like a parody, but I just kinda got used to it

    As someone that *really* likes Silencer and Death - Pierce Me, i never look at those things as "seriously" as some do, it's just music, art or whatever you wanna call it. Maybe what you meant is that the ending ruined depressive atmosphere and i don't see why. Sure, the change at the end was abrupt, but that's what i like about Silencer, most DSBM albums are monotonic as hell. It kinda of shifted into a different phase to conclude the song, but i wouldn't say it sounded 'happy'? Maybe it is subjective, i don't know. The word "Thunderbowel" doesn't even mean anything so i don't understand why it would seem comical, i guess you shouldn't overthink that to be able to enjoy it? haha. The way he said it was a bit strange and unfitting though i agree, but it didn't really ruin the song for me thankfully.
    Vocals are something you have get used to, and you have to have the right mindset just like you said. First time i heard it i was confused and not entirely satisfied.
    The musical theme is supposed to be both agonizing AND beautiful and i think they captured that perfectly.

The singer suffer from schizophreni he is in a real mental hospital or atleast was not sure if he has been released or not. Regarding the lyrics being anti semetic they are kind of far catch. Anyway I hope you listen to more songs from this album cause musically it is very creative and the vocals also have a lot of emotional expression in them

    What I always find so interesting about this extreme, artsy, neopagan, ideologically questionable (at best) end of the DSBM spectrum inhabited by among others Silencer and Shining, is the sheer amount of unadulterated passion on display in every aspect of the piece. This isn’t to say that other music is dispassionate, but rather that one almost drowns in the sheer oozing dedication to the to the totality of the image surrounding these artists and their art, how these people can seemingly immerse themselves so fully in not just the darkness but also the stranger, even less palatable aspects of the beliefs and imagery surrounding the lyrics and performance. I don’t quite feel like it’s seriousness is undermined, but rather that this kind of music exists so far from anything we would consider “normal” that it broaches the avant-garde by virtue of pure, unadulterated expression. It’s exotic, alien, and my leading theory is that most of, not just the music, but the ideologies too, comes from a place of mental illness (I suppose I should preface with saying I’m not a mental health professional, I’m merely schizotypic and happen to also make and write really dark extreme metal and be Scandinavian), the lyrical content, the lack of tonal awareness, the strange/unjustified compositional choices etc. etc. I absolutely believe these bands to be entirely sincere, and not at all trying to minimise suicide or mental health struggles, but merely coming from a point of view outside of the ability for most people to empathise with, due to a fundamental disconnect in the way the internal and external world interacts within these artists, as opposed to how they do within most of the populace.
    That being said, I would never listen to Silencer casually because of their connections to NSBM tropes, which I absolutely despise, regardless of where it comes from/the level of belief in the ideas.

    I've heared this "silencer is depressive NSBM" rethoric many times before, and I really cant take it seriously. Those "antisemitic" things border on pathetic for atual nazi BM. My personal theory is that nattramn may have been of jewish descent and may have had relatives who suffered/died during the holocaust so he used this theme throughout. Lyrics like "convert my ashes" is not what you would hear in NSBM. Again "the consumption of six milion stars, cyclonic winds in septic wars" sounds more like describing in very edgy terms what the holocaust must have been like, or "shed the blood of jew men, slay the fucking lion of juda" sounds like the feelings of a desperate SS officer as allies come closing in, I don't think that Silencer is NSBM at all, it would be pathetic for a nazi to write such lyrics.

      You have to be purposefully blind to think that the song title "Feeble Are You, Sons of Sion" isn't anti-semitic. And "I Shall Lead, You Shall Follow" contains references to Jewish pogroms ("Revive The Night Of Crystals!") and "slaying the lion of Judah" in a disturbingly positive manner. Finally, "Taklamakan" begins with the phrases "Crush the shield of the Hexagon, Condemn the sons of the law", referencing the Star of David and the Torah.
      It all fits to anti-semitic themes. You may say "oh they're just on character", but then they're rightfully accused of being stupidly edgy.

    I have always thought Silencer is overrated. If you want good DSBM just listen to Coldworld - Melancholie 2 album or a song in the album like “Tortured by Solitude”.

    I like the music but never paid much attention to he lyrics so the "antisemitics" lyrics flew over my head... It's sad I guess but the music still is interesting in some situations.
    Other people already recommended Xasthur so I'll recommend you Uaral, from Chile, a band formed by 2 brothers (Caudal on vocals and Aciago on the instrumentation) and the play a mix of DSBM, Doom and Folk, the song Depresión is great, Sounds Of Pain is also very good if you want something lenghtier or Acidal (Tonada para el huerto en Re menor) would be another amazing choice.

    Music was decent, but like you said some of the stuff in the latter half totally undermined the tone. Also, I like crazy DSBM vocals, but some of these were pretty bad. I feel like there were times where he succeeded in sounding tortured, but other parts were cheesy. The weird grunts felt comically out of place. The lyrics were lame too.

    although you have listened to plenty black metal on this channel you still make beginner mistakes. black metal on itself is extreme. not as in extreme metal but extreme opinion and attitude. black metal is never parody. its not the music that has to become less cheesy but you have to be more understanding and feeling whatever they are feeling too. i could ramble for hours but one thing is for sure, im a fan of yours so keep trying to like black metal

    I just couldn't get past the vocals. At multiple points I was stifling a grin because of how ridiculous the vocals were. I also really don't understand what they were going for with them, and I also can't figure out if it's meant to be a parody or if they're actually serious. Either way, I think the music was... OK? A lot of it reminds me of early Katatonia in the style of the riffing and the general depressive/melancholic quality and how they shift from cleans to heavy/distortion; but I don't think there's anything particularly outstanding that would make me want to listen just for the music.

    Sorry but only found one song referencing anything about the Nazis, and perhaps you need a reminder, singing about Nazis doesn't make someone a Nazi. I don't know man....kind of obvious. Also NEVER heard anything about him being a Nazi, and I use to be on the mail list haha sorry.
    Cool you did this, I think early Bethlehem would be a much better example though. Even better, the newest Deinonychus-Ode to acts of murder violence and suicide. Just make sure the kid doesn't pop in again, she could be scarred!

      They may only have 1 song *referencing* Nazis but 3 out of the 5 tracks on this album contain anti-semetic lyrics. Someone else already broke this down elsewhere in the comments so I'll use their explaination.
      "...the song title "Feeble Are You, Sons of Sion". And "I Shall Lead, You Shall Follow" contains references to Jewish pogroms ("Revive The Night Of Crystals!") and "slaying the lion of Judah" in a disturbingly positive manner. Finally, "Taklamakan" begins with the phrases "Crush the shield of the Hexagon, Condemn the sons of the law", referencing the Star of David and the Torah."

    • @matt_4249
      @matt_4249 Год назад +3

      @@CriticalReactions I agree that there are anti-semetic lyrics on this album, but I think it's important to differentiate between anti-religion and anti-semetic. "Crush the shield of the Hexagon, Condemn the sons of the law", seems like perfectly fine anti-religion stuff, "Revive the night of crystals!" is pretty fucked anti-semetic stuff.

    It's pretty cheesy and cringe that you call yourself adult and others child. I've seen you that have done that in bunch of other videos too. What do you wanna prove? You wanna prove that you are better than others and the people that made that music? You always listen to this type of music with negative mindset and it hinders you to understand it. If you don't like it why do you force yourself to listen to it this much?

      It's almost that you didn't watch the full video. He's clear in that the song and lyrics don't _feel authentic_ , not that the band members are children or whatever.
      And would there be any wrong in forcing oneself out of the comfort zone? If I didn't try that, I personally wouldn't have found the many bands and projects from various subgenres that have brought such diversity to my musical library. The author of this video has all the right to do the same.

      @@frostup5163 I'm a Silencer fan, and I understood what he meant with his analysis. Its EASY AS HELL to see how this could all be interpreted as juvenile edgelordism. THat being said, I don't think CR realizes that depression can come from the mentally disturbed, and such people will often mock their own depression, and themselves, and others. Its not just depression, but schizophrenia and other mental disorders combined. You should be intelligent enough to understand how CR could perceive this as a parody, Frost.
