Cracking video, lots of very good info. One criticism though. At 17:40, you hold both pike by their jaws only. You never see any other specimen fish held this way. It's not handle, please support the fish with two hands even if a two fish photo is in the offing.
Thanks for checking out the video. Good that you’re looking out for the welfare of the fish 👍 Part of their body weight is still on the ground so might not be quite as bad as it looks on screen. Thanks again for watching.
Great video. I've just come back to fishing after a 30 year break but I'm after pike instead of the roach and perch. 2 weeks in and yet to catch but I'm sure it won't be long. I prefer that method you're showing us, on the bottom with the float.
Another really good watch Nick, loved it! Seemed to be one of those sessions where you just don’t want to go home ! I much prefer float fishing for pike, it’s such an active searching method more akin to hunting than trapping. The only thing I would say to any novices watching ( assuming 2 rods are used) is to make sure both floats are visible at all times and preferably (unless drifting) use an alarm as a back up - just in case. Incidentally, it’s strange that when the 4 rod allowance came about I thought it would up my catch rate significantly especially on big waters but in reality nothing was further from the truth. The use of 3 or 4 rods simply made me lazy, less mobile or inclined to move onto fish (of all species) Having watched decent match anglers I’ve gone full circle and now rarely use more than two rods by choice again much preferring to really work at my fishing and baiting techniques to find and hold fish. Admittedly I rarely fish long sessions now but I certainly don’t think my catches have diminished. Anyway keep em coming Nick, your enthusiasm is infectious mate - how about a big Lea chub or barbel session before the end of the season? All the best.
Thanks for watching! I much prefer floats. There’s something about seeing a float slide away. And like you say, it’s more active and just feels like you’re actively searching. I couldn’t imagine trying to fish the way I do with 4 rods 😂 It would be a nightmare! I’ve been trying to combat this coloured flood water with bright, rattling crankbaits and had a nice chub the other day .... so watch this space! 😉👍🎣
Sounds interesting! I’ll look forward to that! Yep, I agree entirely, 4, or even 3 rods can be an absolute nightmare; Manageable ( just about!) on big barren pits and reservoirs where you can hit a fish and walk down the bank to avoid the other rods but generally more of a hindrance. Most times only two rods are in the baited area anyway whilst the others tend to be ‘rovers’ - logic now tells me to properly concentrate on the prepared, baited area and get the best out of it. Or, better still, if time is limited, adapt the approach completely, ditch the bivvy and be mobile with minimal gear - float fishing, rolling/trundling, baiting a few spots and stalking, leapfrogging swims and, as you have clearly demonstrated , lure fishing, produce plenty of fish ( especially on the rivers). Sorry I always waffle on too much..... enjoy the last few days of the river season. All the best.
Hi. When you fish under depth. How big is the weight in comparison to the float please? For example. If I use a 25g Float and match that with a 25g weight will it be perfect or far too heavy and pull the float under? Thanks
@@Lifeonthebank Honestly I have not tried that method yet. Always ledger a deadbait on the bottom using the Pike stem kit. As I fish with two/three rods I wanted to start trying something different on one of my rods. I was concerned that I got too heavy a weight to cock the float. I'm pretty sure it would be fine if was still fishing it on the bottom but I'm hoping to suspend the bait at different depths. I guess I will see what it looks like when I test it out next weekend. But I'm glad you seem to think it will be ok.
Great Session! Thanks for the great content! I just bought the same GS 4000 reels, and am wondering if I need to convert the drag to a “quick drag” (Intending to target carp) have you done this? Or are you using them as they are out the box? Thanks again for the tips!
I just use them as they come. I use them for everything but don’t put them on buzzers, use them for stalking etc. I have the ZELOS 5000s for carp and have converted those to quick drag. Hope that helps!
Hi great vid. I went out today on the river. Caught nothing so thought I’d come here for some tips. Your in-line float, would this work in principle on a river in slack eddies. Plus what’s the make of float and size. Tight lines 👌🏻👍🏻
It’s all about depth of field. A wide aperture to create a shallow depth of field. Punch that into RUclips and all will be explained. Get yourself a decent SLR if you’ve not got one yet. If you’re getting into this stuff for the first I recommend the Canon M50. Good luck and thanks for watching 👍👍👍
Great video, really enjoyed it. I was always taught to hook my deadbaits with the points facing the head as the pike generally attack from behind? I notice that you do it the other way round?
Alex Page when the fish is dead the pike will take it from the fron because it’s easier to eat. With a live bait you’d do it the way you’ve mentioned so they can use their tail to swim about
Generally they take then head first. I was told this by better pike anglers than myself and this is how I now hook them. Thanks for watching the video! 👍
Just wondering, if your weight is on the bottom, why you use the float at all? I sometimes do that if its extremely windy, but I mostly suspend my bait and let the float drift to cover more water. In warmer water I've also had good luck working the rig like a very slow jerk bait, and splashing the bobber around like a topwater to attract attention... it works but especially in dirty water they will sometimes go after the float. Most of my pike floats have some battle scars before too long lol.
I don’t seem to do as well drifting. Do you find it more effective? Yes, you could ask why not just ledger but I still like to watch a float come to life! There’s something about it!
@@Lifeonthebank I do better drifting, and usually work my bait for even more action. Our open water season opens in May though, and within a couple weeks pike usually start hitting lures better than bait. Even in the winter, fishing through the ice, a jigged bait almost always out fishes a stationary one in my area.
I use it all the time , for pike , the clutch or drag is usually set full on to enable the hook set . You then have to fart about easing the clutch out if the fish starts to run , switching on the back wind allows for finite control . I find it useful if the fish makes a last minute lunge coming to the net , or jumps/tailwalks . As Mr Speedo said , it offers more refinement/control .
its 2020 theirs a clutch setting on the all reels fgs my pet hate is golden oldies using back wind tactics , its OK with jacks but god help big hard fighting pike wise up and move with the times
I switch it up depending on what I’m fishing for and what reels I’m using. And based on snags in swim etc. Watch my carp and maggots and you’ll see the clutch burning. TBH there are a few times in this video where I should have engaged the clutch, I like these reels but thinking of getting them converted. Engaging the drag takes too many turns and don’t want it engaged when I set the hooks www.southcustomreels.com/product-page/daiwa-gs-ltd-reels-quick-drag-kit Thanks for watching.
Snoekverslaafde thats a very good question! With pike I want to quite firmly set the hooks and don’t want the drag to activate until that happens. On these particular reels I have found that setting the drag once the fishing is hooked is slower than flipping on the ant-reserve. In some other videos (carp) you’ll see me using the drag, as there I’m using rigs that hook the fish. I must admit though, I think I should have fished the drag when margin fishing at the start of this video (clamping down on the spool on the strike). The second fish nearly ripped the rod out my hands!!! 😂 Thanks for watching! 👍🎣🎣
@@Lifeonthebank I also hold the spool with my hand when i set the hooks. That gives me enough time to set the drag if needed and im always sure i can set them. I was just currious why you did it this way. Thx for the answer !
@@Lifeonthebank Yes mate Demon circle's as well as cat fish hooks I forget the name. Even a large standard sea hook will suffice. Deep hooking is a thing of the past. I can pretty much guarantee all the fish are hooked in the same exact place in the scissors. No nasty net tangles either . I use barbless as well and secure the bait with those red rubber bait stops
Got these thinking they were the slightly larger Panfish floats ruclips.net/user/postUgkx_rJB7cli5f1ofPVGgn80S7Yj4vqwq0gU they work just fine. The smaller size lets me carry more in my tackle box, and the 3 color choices are nice for different lighting conditions, backgrounds, etc. They aren't the most durable things in the world. But, as cheap as they are, it's not heartbreaking to lose one or have to replace a worn one. The price on these fluctuates wildly, from about $9 to almost $16. So, time your buy accordingly.
great video if you didn't back wind grrrrhhhh my pet hate that went out of style in the 70s , reels are made now a days with clutches so no need for it , you get a big fish on your knuckles will be broke and the fish will be swimming away with a trace connected to it forever
I’ll take that as a compliment 😁 Honestly, it’s just me and a couple of cameras. Many clips are done on my iPhone 11. My roots are in video and editing as a profession, which does help but it’s all about the fishing. Nothing fishy going on.
@@Lifeonthebank It's more to do with your advertising.. now you must be incredibly vain and paying for views or one of them companies is pushing there agenda as your growth and view count is unnatural now you can do what u like but let's be honest

its 2020 theirs a clutch setting on the all reels fgs my pet hate is golden oldies using back wind tactics , its OK with jacks but god help big hard fighting pike wise up and move with the times
I switch it up depending on what I’m fishing for and what reels I’m using. And based on snags in swim etc. Watch my carp and maggots and you’ll see the clutch burning. TBH there are a few times in this video where I should have engaged the clutch, I like these reels but thinking of getting them converted. Engaging the drag takes too many turns and don’t want it engaged when I set the hooks www.southcustomreels.com/product-page/daiwa-gs-ltd-reels-quick-drag-kit
Thanks for watching.
ever try dead mackeral?
Mackerel is known to be a great pike bait, however, I tend to stick with Smelt or dead Roach.
@@Lifeonthebank yeah nice
Can u use a lure rod for this ? With a casting weight of 100g
Probably ok if you weren’t trying to cast too far and didn’t use deadbaits that were too big! 👍👍
What deadbaits would not be to big ? What bout a carp rod would that work better?
Thanks for replying 👍
Was thinking canal rivers maybe
Yeah, better off with your carp rods. Stick to sprats or smelt. Avoid whole mackerel and big baits like that.
Why dont you use the drag of the reel?
How come you fish with your reel open?
You mean with the backwind engaged? Thanks for watching! 👍
was your weight fixed or sliding?
I fish them sliding with a bead beneath them but they’re actually designed to be fixed I think.
What test curve is your rod?
Korum Snapper Cult Deadbait Rod, 12ft, 3.25tc. 👍🐊👌
That's the exact same set up i use the only difference is i use a large single hook . Trebles are so unnecessary in my experience.
I see a lot of people switching to a single hook. Do you use Circle style hooks?
@@Lifeonthebank Yes mate Demon circle's as well as cat fish hooks I forget the name.
Even a large standard sea hook will suffice.
Deep hooking is a thing of the past. I can pretty much guarantee all the fish are hooked in the same exact place in the scissors. No nasty net tangles either .
I use barbless as well and secure the bait with those red rubber bait stops
What is the brand of your float? Thanks
I use the korum snapper floats, 25g. 👍👍👍
What weight is your float?
Got these thinking they were the slightly larger Panfish floats ruclips.net/user/postUgkx_rJB7cli5f1ofPVGgn80S7Yj4vqwq0gU they work just fine. The smaller size lets me carry more in my tackle box, and the 3 color choices are nice for different lighting conditions, backgrounds, etc. They aren't the most durable things in the world. But, as cheap as they are, it's not heartbreaking to lose one or have to replace a worn one. The price on these fluctuates wildly, from about $9 to almost $16. So, time your buy accordingly.
Thanks!!! 🙏👍
Where are you fishing please
great video if you didn't back wind grrrrhhhh my pet hate that went out of style in the 70s , reels are made now a days with clutches so no need for it , you get a big fish on your knuckles will be broke and the fish will be swimming away with a trace connected to it forever
Was new reels at the time but installed quick drag on them now. Thanks for checking out the video. Glad you enjoyed it ... apart from that 😁
Use a reel with drag
New reels in this vid. Trusted my sense of touch until I got used to the drag.
Thers nothing worse than over eager fish !!! soon as they see the camera they wanna be on Fb or youtube lol
😂😂😂👍
something fishy about this channel and i think its sponcered by korum @ pikepro time to come clean as it's a little to polished
I’m now sponsored, that’s true - but I’m not paid, this channel was not set up by a tackle company, it was set up by me. It’s just me, no camera men, no help editing, it’s just me. I’m not really sure where you’re going with this tbh. I’m pleased that my videos are doing well. Stay positive my friend and enjoy the videos. 😁🎣
