    The single most important thing for avoiding a climate disaster is cutting carbon pollution from the current 51 billion tons per year to zero, says philanthropist and technologist Bill Gates. Introducing the concept of the "green premium" -- the higher price of zero-emission products like electric cars, artificial meat or sustainable aviation fuel -- Gates identifies the breakthroughs and investments we need to reduce the cost of clean tech, decarbonize the economy and create a pathway to a clean and prosperous future for all. (This virtual conversation, hosted by TED Global curator Bruno Giussani, was recorded in March 2021.)
    Countdown is TED's global initiative to accelerate solutions to the climate crisis. The goal: to build a better future by cutting greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2030, in the race to a zero-carbon world. Get involved at countdown.ted.com/sign-up

It isn't strong but it does sequester co2, it is breathable and temperature regulating, it is mold and mildew resistant, it is fire proof, it is pest resistant, and it does get stronger as it ages. So we can replace sheet rock and insulation by building with hempcrete. There is also hemp wood, hemp plaster, and on and on.

My 20 years old car is just fine, because buying a new car means they will have to make one, and that's polluting more. We need to learn to hold onto things and not always want more.

      This is my problem with Gates' plan: It doesn't propose any fundamental shift in the way we relate to the planet. We can keep driving cars they just need to be electric. We can still eat burgers they just need to be 'impossible" burgers. We can still run our air conditioners they just need to be solar powered. We can still build with concrete it just needs to be "green" concrete. We can still cut down forests they just need to be "sustainably" managed. We can still fly airplanes they just need to use bio-fuels. Basically: we can still live the way we live today and consume what we consume... we just make those products "green". Gates' proposals are much easier to accept than more "radical" changes. But sooner or later we will be forced to make "radical" changes to the way we live. Gates' ideas are not the way to avoid climate disaster. They are a clever marketing strategy aimed at consumers who are awakening to the unfolding climate disaster.

      Such a short sighted view. If you the consumer stopped buying their products they'd change over night. If the government had listened to scientists and changed the laws decades ago it wouldn't be problem. If the people voting in the government had voted in different people maybe they would have changed the laws.
      Companies are beholden to the shareholder and have a responsibility to operate a profitable company. It is the government and consumer responsibility to dictate what a business is allowed to do. If you are mad at Big-(whatever) it's probably a consumers fault. After all how was the device you used to post this made? Is it powered renewably?

      I fear that Geo Engineering as a solution for climate change is a very controversial topic! We could make the planet far more reactive in order to limit the heating from the sun. But this is going to have negative impacts on some other regions. For example, if we just spend a lot of energy producing more clouds by evaporating sea water, this can also result in rain and flooding on some regions. I like the option of flooding the Qattara Depression in Egypt for example, but this is not without risk and long term consequences.

    • @sungjinpark3535
      @sungjinpark3535 2 года назад +2

      Thats still up for debate. Nuclear may not be the answer, but one of the answers. It comes down to are the people going to be ok with living near a nuclear power plant? If you think people are overreacting, maybe you are under estimating the power of human error. I wish nuclear was the clear cut answer like Tony Stark’s arc reactor. As in perfecting nuclear energy will help us accelerate our human growth, however, you seriously have to consider the cost of a potential hazard. We say in Dutch; 'aard van het beestje', I don't know the English translations, but this man and all the richest people have a habit of making money, btw he's a computer engineer, not an environmental engineer, he's producing McDonald's potatoes and spreading GMO and glyphosate farming around the 3rd world, it will take ages for him to understand ecosystems if all he talks to are people from the post-war chemical agro-industry, technocrats or whatever you call it, it's like religion..

    There's a huge problem with this plan and I submit that it's exemplified by the fact there exists a "tech" industry which excludes the industrial economy. It's cheap to disrupt the software and entertainment industries. Places like Silicon Valley just hoover up all the best engineers. No one graduates with an engineering degree dreaming about the chance to work in cement production. Innovation is like a tree that's not true-from-seed. It takes almost 100,000 apple trees to get one that produces fruit that tastes good. If the smartest engineers don't start pouring into these legacy, old-timey, stodgy, bureaucratic industries then climate change innovation will just be crab apples no matter how much money gets thrown at it.

      Once there are incentives and the money is flowing consistently into reducing emissions in these industries, the talent will go there. Following the money is the number one rule for bright minds with big student loans to pay off.

    CO2 Sequestration which mainly supports the carbon capture efforts will be an area of concern that really contributed to the reduction of emissions, but the commitment to both carbon capture and practical actions for emission reductions still not moving fast or expanded realistically. Again the amount of compensation for the tons of carbon is also required to be once seen and adjusted to acceptable levels. Transparency and accountability linked with carbon capture measurements are also important areas of concern that need to be seen well in depth.

    Could moscovium Element 115 be used to make trash cans for food that gets throwed a way in prisons dietaries government cafeterias automat luncheons and be safe enough to not cause long term damage to humans and be lined with vertical ultraviolate lights inside of them to sanitize the food destroying any bacteria that may grow in the food and to help anhydride the food as in order to prevent it from decompiosing any further so as to where it could be shipped to a facility that could finish processing it in order to distribute it to starving people and or into dog food?

      Aside from that that's a good idea. In theory.
      Also UV-C fuses 3-2-O2 into 4-O3 or 2-2-O3 and O3 causes blood poisoning, it's heavier than oxygen so it sinks to the lowest part of the body.

    The urge to save humanity is almost always only a false-face for the urge to rule it. Power is what all messiahs really seek: not the chance to serve. This is true even of the pious brethren who carry the gospel to foreign parts.
