I'll let you look up "stage 3 of demographic transition " in wikipedia for details (note the exhaustive list of sources), but basically, when living conditions improve, people choose to have less children, so the rate of population increase is diminished.

look it up. he uses sustainable fuels and offsets the carbon footprint of his family's commercial travel. he also invests in zero carbon energy technologies.
Why does he have to live in a tent and own a bicycle to fit your idea of a good person? Do you live in a tent? The point is it's all relative and he was also a kid at some point and did not understand the best principles for sustainability, etc. But thinking is hard..

he's not talking about no co2. you have misunderstood. he's talking about NET zero co2, as in the same amount of co2 going into the atmosphere as out of it each year. the problem is the billions of tons of excess co2 humans dump into the atmosphere every year.

It was actually tough to find this clip, but after a few minutes of googling, I found an article claiming to debunk the claim that Bill Gates was advocating for population reduction. They said it was selectively edited, and taken out of context, but were courteous enough to provide a link to this video. I don't know why they would do that, since the content of the ORIGINAL UNEDITED VIDEO that THEY THEMSELVES PROVIDED completely discredits them. It's almost as if they expect the public to simply take their word for it and not even look at the evidence when presented. This is sickening.

The plants are very grateful for every ounce of that CO2.
The goal is to reduce the CO2 emissions per unit of energy we produce, not to strip the earth of CO2. Plus, plant life existed from way before human civilization and industries, so 'not' producing CO2 when producing our energy isn't going to affect plant life in a negative way. They can survive without our emissions from power plants. Also, they need CO2 only during the day for photosynthesis. Plants are also constantly respiring aerobically which requires oxygen.

I think it's more societies in general that have done this, not specifically him.It's a process with many factors, including the ones he mentions but not solely.

If what he’s saying were true, perhaps he’d also address mind blowing energy technology that is being kept black and as a minimum encouraging local crop production, finding a local farmer and buying meats and eggs locally, growing home gardens and not eating fruit out of season like we were once used to as northerners. But the likes of Cargill, Tyson foods and ADM etc., wouldn’t appreciate that as they truck food all over this country emitting what Gates was appointed to reduce. It's funny how in these conversations about reduction of emission noone talks about the increase in consumption due to more powerful computers, I bet it might be significant how much more power usage and battery production we have with all the devices we use nowadays. A computer in the 90s was probably using 50-60W against a computer now averaging 300-400W (gaming PCs go up to 1000W). Plus more consoles, phones, tablets, servers, internet infrastructure. They are all both more powerful and widely more used these days.

But the issue is in poor countries, there are poor conditions of living, poor hygiene, and lots of diseases which infect large number of kids and end up dying. Most parents have between 4-6 kids due lack of education. This will make it harder for the parents to afford and provide for these kids that many die of poverty. So by vaccines and educating on controlling birth rate, parents in poor countries have less kids but healthy. This is what he meant. But of course a guy who scored 1590/1600 on an SAT test is not going to simplify the equation. Also most people who attended the TEd Talk that day might have a background and already filled in on the details after.

Note that not every kind of food can be produced on any kind of soil, let alone "cultivating" deserts or mountains. Also, converting too much land into arable land would severely destabilize some ecosystems, some in an irreversible manner [at least short-term]; deforestation is not even an option, let alone a viable one.
We need demographic stabilization, and we need it ASAP - no killings involved, just responsible reproduction.

it wouldn't. that is a misunderstanding. he's not talking about lowering the current population by 10-15%, but rather the _projected_ population. people in poor countries with high child mortality and no access to contraception have a high birth rate - their population is growing rapidly. if you give them vaccines and contraception and generally improve their lives, the birth rate comes down, so you avoid their population getting as high. make sense? that's what he's talking about, not killing millions or billions of people.

What he’s saying is that better healthcare will make parents have less of a reason to have so many children. Before we had medicine today people had way more children (anywhere from 2 to 7 or more) because they knew not all of them would survive because of all the diseases that didn’t have vaccines at the time. Now with even better medicine parents will have only 1-2 children because they know they will be safe.
Vaccines don’t depopulate like you want to think he’s saying; they slow down the POPULATION GROWTH RATE.
