- Switching from counter-insurgency operations to fighting a war is tough, more so when there is little time at hand. Perhaps few would know it better than Maj. Gen. Mohinder Puri (who subsequently retired as Lt Gen), who commanded the 8 Mountain Division in 1999.
In May 1999, we were located in Sharifabad and given the task of counter-insurgency operations in North Kashmir, he told Bharat Shakti Editor-in-Chief Nitin A. Gokhale as part of our special series ‘Kargil, 25 Years On’.
Around the third week of May, the Corps Commander called him up and asked him to be prepared to move to Dras. He did a recce of the area, returned and made plans. Then, he was told to hang on as some other formation would be deployed there. Hours later, the plans changed. Then Army Chief Gen. VP Malik asked him whether he would like to undertake the operation. Maj. Gen. Puri agreed. “There was no choice and there should be no choice. War comes only once in a lifetime.
"We would appreciate if there is no pressure on us. Given the terrain, the casualties are going to be high," he told the Chief who gave the go-ahead and kept his word till the end.
25 years later, he credits the young officers and jawans for the military victory. “We owe it to them; they did a spectacular job.” Listen in for more.

Nitin Gohkle let Mohinder speak
When guest is speaking please allow him to speak complete without interrupting, because of interruption momentum of story got broke down.
@ NG # it’s quite irritating in other wise interesting narrative
Nitin, for the sake of god, please let the guest speak. You speak like you fought the war. Such frequent interruptions are irritating.
Seriously. he is quite oversmart.. He thinks he knows everything
@@sumanbhargav1357 exactly. I have seen this with these war journalists. The likes of Nitin, Gaurav Sawant etc.
They think of themselves as if they are a Colonel or something, while in reality they are not even deserving to be a Sepoy.
This is a frequent occurrence. A style issue. A pity as the programmes are of value.
Seems this might have written in the journalism guide book
Totally agreed .... This Guy try to be oversmart .. as if he only faught the War
Nitin , next time please let the very qualified guest speak . You are constantly interrupting him to show your knowledge. He was the GOC ! Let him speak please .
He was GOC that time who as a general never understood difference between Intruders and Infiltators. Top generals at that time forced battalions without proper military assessments resulting in more casualties. But, these generals decorated themselves after the war in the names of many death young officers and Jawans. Shame on you general!

don't talk nonsense without any real understanding. He was originally in the valley, deployed to dras only on 1st June. He explicitly requested commannders to give him time and gave his units more than 10 days to acclamatise and prepare and finally launched assault on Tololing on 12 th June, which was successful. By 10th of July his division had cleared most of intrusions in Dras and Mashkoh. Educate yourself because talking trash on distinguished people.
@@nchandrak17He is actually talking about general Budhwar and general Krishan Pal.
@Hdxgaihk I don't think so, read through thread, from the first comment. Yes Budhwar and Krishan Pal, definitely made terrible decision, Krishan Pal more so than Budhwar.
@@nchandrak17 I think he confused Gen Puri with one of them.
Thanks Nitin for bringing up such marvellous programs. Our army is definitely superior, thanks to brave men and officers. Jai Hind
salute to our veterans and veer soldiers. salute to indian armed forces. jai hind. jai bharat.
Nitin please desist the tendency to keep commenting and interrupting the guest.
Fantastic conversation. I am not sure we learnt a lot from Kargil, seeing how China did what it did in Galwan, what it did in DBO. Again what we heard was intelligence failure. It feels like we are always in a reactive mode. But the foot soldiers and the frontline officers always come to the rescue
Thx a lot Mr Nitin for such a set of episodes on kargil war 1999. I have seen all ur episodes on kargil and waiting for more to come till 25th Vijay diwas.
🙏🏻

How IAF had big role in Kargil war
We are repeating the same mistake in jammu as we did in kargil.
The only people who didn't perform where the general staff
The neglected the 5 para casulity caused by arty from point 5707
It is a matter of concern and shame why Army Top Brass does not learn its lessons from Kargil of always fail to anticipate worst possible scenario and why they do not use heavy weaponry helicopters, drones and artillery initially and they always use soldiers and rifles till they suffer heavy casualties and eventually end up using heavy weaponry at the end after loosing precious life of army soldiers. The top brass of Army always have attitude of a laid back south block bureaucrat and the junior officers and jawans pay price.
Also whole patrols disappeared and GEn staff thought it was a few irregular s
Any inefficiency and stupidity of Generals gave our own posts to Pakistanis.
Where is mu comment ?😮
The officer lost their life coz thery were greedy for the medal and till now half of them get killed due to the same reason. The true foundation of India are Jawans not these officers.
Shameful how the govt treats our soldiers
