. . .and here I am another 8 years later, still watching this and still loving it just as much as the first time I ever heard it. We still love you, Paul.
Paul McDermott (and Richard Fidler) responsible for two of the greatest moments on Australian TV. This one here and also the brilliant DAAS rendition of I Heard It Through The Grapevine on The Big Gig.
I will never forget when they first did this song on the ABC. I was a kid and instantly fell in love with the Doug Anthony Allstars. Tried to follow them from that point on. I had the pleasure of meeting Paul in 2019 (I was thrilled) and just missed out on seeing Tim (on his book tour) weeks before that. One day I hope to meet all of them.
You don't realise how good Hunters and Collectors were until you hear this version. The test of a great song is when someone else covers it and its even better.
Have you ever seen the cover Eddie Vedder (Pearl Jam) does of this? He invites Mark Seymour (the author) onto the stage with him. It's stunningly brilliant. :/
@@AntSandys Eddie and Mark has to be the greatest version, I get tears of both joy and sorrow every time I hear it, He's got a fucking brilliant voice, I love pearl Jam so I may be a bit biased but I honestly think that performance can never be topped
I still remember watching this many years ago when it aired; I didn’t even know who Paul was other than as the host of Good News Week despite watching countless episodes with my family, still my favourite rendition of this song.
Yeah it was a good few years before I’d learn of DAAS either. I remember watching this and not having a clue who the funny little man was making Paul sing.
I am so glad that you put this up here - I too have it somewhere on VHS and would watch it sometimes and cry. It was aired, I think, on new year's eve about 10 years ago. It always reminds me of my wonderful girlfriend Liz and the times - including new years - that we spent together. I'm with someone else now and am very happy - but i love being taken back to these times with Liz and how i felt - and feel - about her. Thank you so much.
Always wondered why Paul didn't pursue music after DAAS. DAAS Heard it Through the Grape Vine, kills me every time. Would love to hear Paul sing Tangled up In Blue. Go tell the kids we had music and it was great!!!
I have loved him for 25 yr, he is the most talented and well versed musician australia has, only if he sung more or done it more often. he writes the best songs, he does the best covers, check out I heard it thru the grapevine or the song he did we fiona horne, shut and kiss me.
When l heard this the first time , l had only vaguely heard of Hunters and Collectors , and didn't know it was their song ... Paul's version is by far the best l've ever heard with all due respect to the Hunters 🙂 Paul has the voice of an angel .....his foul mouth is as forgivable as Billy Connolly's and doesn't diminish his performance in my eyes ....always loved DAAS ....they were a credit to Australia
OMG I have the audio of this exact recording, was on JJJ hotest 100 or AFI or something many years ago- magical! Paul, if you ever google yourself and see this- release some of your wicked shit on album buddy! We want more PMcD originals and a few of his classics just like this one. PLEEEEAAASSSEEE!
I will never forget this he did it maybe twice on this show and when he did it just brought the house down. Yes this boy can sing . The good old days when be ing Aussie was not thing that others tried to make you ashamed of being, but rather respected , revered and sticking finger up to the world and saying I am AUSTRALIAN AND I DONT GIVE A FUCK WHAT YOU THIN K ABOUT ME OR MY COUNTRY OR MY PEOPLE. FIAR BLOOD DINKUM.
I am a hetero male but Paul is f**king adorable. He has a deadly serious face in this performance that screams of modesty - he ought to sing more. I want to get drunk with him and sing harmony.
Its not often I prefer a cover to the original but (no offence to H * C, cos I really like their version too) but this is soooo much better than the original
He did this during DAAS, But Richard appeared on GNW and they did a duet. I believe DAAS was coming back for a bit but Tim has MS so they have new material
It is about many things…..sex, love, loss of a lover. One of the best songs EVER! Great songs can be about whatever the listener can apply it to in their lives.
Still watching in 2024! 🥹
Watched it on that New Year’s Eve and watching it now!
Hell yeah
I’m rediscovering as a grown up, what a National treasure you really are Paul!
Probably the most underrated singer Australia has ever produced. By god he can sing!!!!!
Utterly amazing voice.
And the way he changes.. Like he's been taken over by an angel
Never underrated
The voice of an angel!
Still watching this in 2023!
This is my all time favourite Paul McDermott moment from Good News Week. Amazing! Gives me goosebumps listening to it again.
This is the best version of this song I've ever heard. Paul's voice is amazing.
Beautiful.
. . .and here I am another 8 years later, still watching this and still loving it just as much as the first time I ever heard it. We still love you, Paul.
Voice of an angel with the face of a devil's cherub.
God I love this!!! 20 years later and I still LOVE it . . !!! Paul, we love you.
Good News Week. Recovery. Hey Hey it's Saturday.
We didn't know how good we had it.
Paul McDermott (and Richard Fidler) responsible for two of the greatest moments on Australian TV. This one here and also the brilliant DAAS rendition of I Heard It Through The Grapevine on The Big Gig.
I agree. Legendary moments. I remember watching those.
Watching that I Heard It Through The Grapevine LIVE will forever live in my memory. I still go back and watch it - it still gives me chills.
I wanted to have Paul McDermott's babies when I saw this back in the day !
Good news week aired when I was 5 and I've honestly wanted Paul's babies forever haha. I'm almost 29 now. Le sigh. What a voice
Still my favourite version. Amazing that you can feel the passion in his voice.

Takes my breath away EVERY time I hear this!!
Paul has foul mouth cheeky as hell but sings like an angel .love him
Might this be a cool song at a wedding; for a we who are older, been there, and found each other when least expecting.
Was our wedding song - 30 years ago next year
Still remember seeing this on Good News Week all those years ago. A great rendition!
Paul's voice is so pure it's almost angelic
His voice is still that good.
Absolutely beautiful rendition of a beautiful song. What a great voice!

He sings like an angel. I saw this play originally and (sorry, H&C), this brings tears to my eyes every time xxx

Love. Love. Love. Paul is an angel and Richard... well... he's into Tin Tin *wink*
DAAS FOREVER!
Still the best . Goose bumps and all. Thank you Paul
Can still bring me to tears after all these years, like few things can. Thank you.
I remember watching this on TV with my Grandparents. Nin (my Grandmother) fell in love with Paul after this.
Still makes me cry
That voice
Legend, awesome performance. I haven't seen that since it played on GNW all those years ago, so great to enjoy it again!
Voice of an angel.
Coming down from a bourbon bender 😄💜
He has certainly made this his song
Love paul singing this one of my favs ,he just gets better and better
I first heard this in the middle of Dead Alive, and it knocked me silent.
Still takes my breath away.

2022 & still the best version of this song
I lose it everytime at 0:07 just watching Richard's eyebrow arch after he says "sing".
brilliant bloke and talant, entertained me over the years !
love his voice
steph@brodsta - still listening to it often after all these years. Thank you Mark Seymour and Paul McDermott. My favourite Australian song.
One of the few times where the accompaniment actually detracts from the singer . His voice out shines the others by a factor of 10..
Best singer of this song todate.
Still my favourite version of this song 💖
So I've watched this 144.000 times... who're the other 163 guys?
MEEEE!!!
I watch this very regularly haha.
Me too!
I LOVE THIS SONG!! I have this on a GNW CD that I got years ago!

Best version ever. Was ny wedding Walsh
No dislikes. Admittedly only 50 likes, but no dislikes!
He always reminded me of Yakko from Animaniacs.
I can see that
❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️
someone please post the rest of this episode!
Isn't that THE DOUG ANTHONY ALL-STARS, not merely Paul McDermott?
he should perform this on good news week next season.
Damn but I miss Good News Week
This song just popped into my mind while adding songs on my phone. I've always loved it - I think this performance was at the Enmore Theatre?
Miss these shows so much. Never again. Pity about the poor visuals but angel voice and he was such a devil LOL
Love ya work, Paul. Motherfucking legend!
Such talent John Murphy benalla
I used a RUclips to MP3 converter to get this downloaded. Can anyone put it up on Spotify???
ppuuuuuuuuuuurrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
Wasn't this in his DAAS days?
Paul Cuthbertson nah right at the start of the video you can see the set behind him says good news week
Rhajastan ahh so it does!

~sigh~
My god what a singer he is Irish
No he isn't
No a home grown Aussie, but of Irish decent as are lot of us are...and bloody proud of it!
Great job by Paul! Shame the audience couldn't pick up the beat to save themselves, LOL
Just trying to figure out what sad trolls (25) could give this a thumbs down !
Probably people that don't like that he covered a hunters and collectors song.
This has been Mandela Effected 😱😭
Bloody Catholic Boys. Some of us can sing damn good....
@FassiDog - No. Just no. Great Song. Amazing Comediean. Good is not good enough mate. ;)
Just to remind people, this song is about fucking not love.
