    I got Andy Hampsten's autograph on a page about 7-11 in a cycling magazine I have when 7-11 arrived at Stapleton Airport in Denver, Colorado on their flight back from Italy after Andy had taken out the Giro. I was waiting at that gate patiently for about five hours so I wouldn't miss them and it was just me at that end of the concourse. I freaking scooped the news reporters and got to talk to Andy first. It will always be a life highlight for me to have met him just like I've also met Greg Lemond, Ron Kiefel, Jonathan Vaughters and several other pro cyclists. They are all great down to earth humans despite the great things they have achieved in pro cycling. Andy seemed to down play that he had just won a Grand Tour and the first American to do so. He made it seem like he had just ridden some little stage race with the team and they ended up winning. We know how very hard they had to work to win the Giro. The Tour de France is a fantastic race but the Giro d' Italia is my favorite.
    That Irish pro you listed as number five. Who is he ? I've never heard of him and wouldn't consider Kevin Livingston really to be a cycling legend.

    Being from Marks hometown I can confirm that Mark does own a road bike, is still fast and still winning local races.

    Andy is such a nice guy. I played softball with him for over a year before I had any clue who he was and what he'd accomplished. I just thought he was your typical Boulder cyclist!

  • @thetheflyinghawaiian

    Andy Hampsten is my cycling hero. When I think of a down to earth American cyclist I think of him, and he never got to much attention always being thought of as a support rider until the Giro. Domestiques are the coolest riders in my opinion.

    • @quinndawsonosgood5261
      @quinndawsonosgood5261 4 года назад +2

      Hampsten got caught in the worst era of cheating in cycling's history. Without EPO use in the peloton Andy would have won more and rode longer. Real shame, he was a special talent

    • @bilwit

      Dan and Simon had the privilege of eating Sir Bradley Wiggins's dust in the 2011 British National Road Race championship while Matt had the privilege of touching his bum in the 2012 Olympics

    • @parkerhunt7826
      @parkerhunt7826 7 лет назад +5

      Dan was racing in the TdF. Seems pretty lofty to me just to have the privilege of racing in that one. Where were you bilwit?

  • @racer7141
    @racer7141 8 лет назад +1

    You should do John Tomac. I know his son is a professional motocross racer and he’s his trainer, but how involved is he in cycling/MTB community today? Plus he is Simon’s cycling hero

      +Till Meister Interviews are a great idea, i would love to hear about the ex-pro riders. This could become a really nice weekly segment. Perhaps the word "legends" should be replaced with something else though, it feels a little bit out of place. Keep up the good work lads.:)

    While visiting Seattle I stopped in to the Hampsten Cycles "Factory" (ie, Steve's garage) and got to have a great talk about bikes with, well, Steve. Lovely chap, happy to answer all my questions even though I made it clear I wasn't going to actually buy a bike.

    What about Matt Stephens, Daniel Lloyd, Simon Richardson and Tom Last?

  • @AnthonyRochester
    @AnthonyRochester 8 лет назад +1

    I reckon there are a lot of pro riders from the 90s and early 00s having an intentionally anonymous retirement. Laying low and hoping no one has too close a look at their past. e.g. Mr Ekimov, although he is working for katusha and not happy to be questioned too much.

  • @eoinmellon5658
    @eoinmellon5658 8 лет назад +7

    Could u do Matt Stephens he was my favourite pro cyclists when I was growing up When I saw him in the black jersey in the giro it was inspiring did u also know he won the British national championships

    • @Toastybear1

      +Eoin Mellon matt got the british national team into the Atlanta olympics in 96- but was then dropped from the team himself just before hand, really unfair- matt was actually a pretty successful cyclist though

    Love this idea/vid. How about Nelson Vails, Frankie Andreu, Steve Tilford, Jens Voight, Cippolini, Vinokurov, the Grewals, Chris Horner, Cancellara, Chiappucci, Raul Aclcala, Davis Phinney, Bobby Julich, Danny Pate, Svein Tuft, Roberto Heras, Dave Zabriske, Christian Vande Velde, Jonathan Vaughters. I might be stretchin the "legend" criteria a bit but...:)

    • @gcn

      +Rupali Lamba what kind of scratches? you can remove minor scraches
      (hair-sized one or more, if it isnt deep enough you can remove it.)
      -use the smoothest sand paper (only work on glossy paint)
      -and polish them with car polisher.
      -done
