Probably to late, but you need to reduce the color. I go 4 parts paint 1 part reducer 1 part hardner with JD paints. I use a urethane clear coat hardner. I owned a collision shop for 15+ years, feel free to ask any questions.

Waiting with bated breath for the completion of the 318. I remember Deere Industrial yellow tractors in the 1960's. New York state had Deere 2010's mowing side of roads in the Upper North Country where I spent my teen years on the farm. I seem to recall that they had mid mount mowers on them. Found a youtube video about Deere 140 yellow that were built in 1970 for use by the U.S. Navy. Apparently only 50 were made and 4 are known to exist. As stated in video, some are most likely at bottom of the ocean. It certainly is a beautiful garden tractor. Search " Deere 140 yellow navy" RUclips selection should pop up.
Your editing skills are excellent. You knack for knowing when to audio-dub and when to audio in real-time is very professional and one of the reasons you are top 5 favorite channels on RUclips. Great job by the girls and Kara for cleaning, supporting and keeping this entire project on pace. I don’t think I’ve ever seen someone paint a 318 that industrial yellow, interested to see how it turns out. Gotta give you props for doing it all yourself!
I have an uncle that made his own equipment, like tractors and a front end loader, and he got used stainless steel fasteners at work, and if he got tired of something he made, he would take it apart, and save the used fasteners, and other parts that still had valve, and reuse them. I've followed a bit, his ideas, so I have stainless steel fasteners for my projects as well. He never painted them, and I don't plan to, either.
I’ve really enjoyed watching this project. I never owned a 318 - but they certainly look like a machine I’d like to use! A suggestion for your next project- the Bronco! 😊

Hi Neil. Great progress on the 318. A wise man once said "It's not a failure if you learned something", or something like that. I think the color scheme looks awesome. It probably wouldn't be too difficult to fabricate a shield for the rear PTO. Since it is a rare option, I wouldn't cut up the original but a custom replacement looks pretty simple. A tip to easily bend heavy plate steel is to score it on the backside about half way through, bend it is a vise and weld up the score on the inside. It looks fine without it but Deere included it for a reason, probably safety related. Thanks for the video! -mike

I'm in Pennsylvania last night the wind was so bad it was snapping trees like tooth picks. Lost power around 9 last night it's still out here as I watch this lol.
I'm watching the back catalog and I thought it looked strange in yellow until you said it was construction yellow in the last video. Now seeing it next to the gray frame I think it looks fantastic!
I like to fill my gun halfway up with paint thinner and put the spray nozzle inside the paint hopper to soak for a day. Then you strip the gun down take out the needle and seat and clean with a scotch-brite. Make sure all the orafices are clear on the nozzle. I keep the excess cleanish thinner from soaking the gun in a little container with a 1" paintbrush for cleaning the gun. That paint you might have to thin out slightly depending on the size of the nozzle. It might be slow to dry also and if its taking over a day to stop "fingerprinting" you might want to add some activator or catalyst. 8-1 ratio or 8 parts paint 1 part activator is good. There are different seasonal activators for summer and winter but any of them will do in the cold. Don't advise using a winter activator in the summer it will cause it to dry too fast...

Like others have suggested thinning the paint might help with HVLP gun; the length of hose you are running will have an effect on the effective volume and velocity at the gun as well.
I think you did a fine job. I love the industrial yellow and grey. The combination is unique! Love seeing the twins helping daddy and having fun. That is something to cherish! I don't blame you for leaving off the rear PTO guard, cover, thing. Keeping the hydraulic lines neat and tidy was more important. I'm going to predict that you will be finished on day 118 or 119 since the weather has been crazy. Ah, the joy of Spring... (lots of sarcasm there) Guaranteed I will see you in the next one. Glad you didn't get any severe damage from that storm. It did a lot of damage around the Quad Cities area, but the worst I had was 8 or 10 branches scattered around the yard and went without grid power for 27 hours. The Harbor Freight Predator I bought almost 2 years ago, started on the 3rd pull and kept us in heat, well water and cooled the fridge just fine. This was the first time I ever used a back up generator and it worked great. I finished my basement re-wiring project a week or so back, by using your "do something every day" idea. 👍🏼👍🏼

there another way to make a diy paint booth a old tent for camping, cut to square holes in back for box fans put plastic screen in the holes and furnace filters on the inside and never have to worry about spray dust getting on anything anymore, just a idea for ya, i made one my self for painting
Wow, crazy year for weather. Glad your fam and property are ok. Watching this gave me an idea. I have a 10 yr old craftsman riding mower that was only $999 new in 2013. I use it about 10 times per year and it takes a bit of maintenance to keep it going. I may paint it the JD color palette you are using. That’ll be a head turner at the 4th of July parade! Progress is progress! I've become a bona fide professional at getting 15 projects going at one time and making snail progress on every one unfortunately. Got a substantial step forward in my cutting edge refractory furnace finally, flooring picked out for the bathroom, and I moved the tarp on my 214 to measure the frame rail adapter kit that's 'in the works'. It all counts, right? 😁
From the can, the paint must always be poured into the sprayer tank through the filter. There are always clots and dried crumbs. They get stuck in the spray nozzle and... Good luck and speedy completion of your project!
Man this is a great series, I admire the dedication. One recommendation for when your painting around small/weird shaped items that you don't want painted (steering wheel) you can use aluminum foil instead of all the tape. I've found it to be easier and cheaper.
Storms were bad on Friday too. I live in the Little Rock area and the path was about 3 miles from us. Lots of trees down - lots of firewood for the tree services if they set the big trees and limbs aside. Looking forward to the seeing how the paint sprayer works out. Thinking about picking one up for some projects coming up.
Maybe you could rebuild the hydraulic hose bracket to put them in a vertical orientation rather than a horizontal one. Then you might be able to have your PTO shield on.
Hey Neil, just wanted to share something with you that has worked very well for me in the past. Everybody's "magic combination" is a little different, so your mileage may vary here. When I mix paint for tractors, on sheet metal I use the ratio 8:4:1. 8 parts paint, 4 parts reducer (I actually use mineral spirits more often than not), and 1 part hardener. I paint I weather where just a flannel shirt on feels good. Then I lay it down in thin THIN layers. First coat over primer looks like it's just barely tinted. Let it tack up for 10 minutes or so, then hit it again. I usually have a rack of several parts needing paint, so usually by the time I get to the end, I'm ready to go back where I started. Usually takes 4-6 coats to get good coverage, and I've only had a 2 instances where it didn't turn out like I expected. On cast iron and chassis parts that can be a little less glassy smooth, I mix my paint 8:2:1, and use fewer coats. Comes out a little thicker, and not as smooth as the sheet metal, but works great for cast.
Hey great advice! Thanks for the tips. The paint can says mix it 4:1. I sprayed it this past weekend and it turned out ok. Little heavy on the orange peel but it is very shiny. I might wet sand it.
@@digdrivediy that's part of the reason I usually use mineral spirits. It tacks up fairly quick, but stays "liquid" long enough to level itself out. I've found that even "slow" reducers dry too quickly. Again, just sharing my experiences with my adventures in painting tractors.
When are you gonna make some hats, or shirts. I have been watching for about 4 months now. I started with your chainsaw repair video loved it then binged watch all your John Deere videos, I personally like Kubota but I love the mighty sub compact sized tractors. Keep the great work up and come to Ontario at some time.

I'm thinking about that PTO protection and hoses bracket, in that tiny space maybe you can make a vertical bracket, and put that protection on the tractor.

Phenomenal job so far on the tractor. Having done a couple of similar projects in the past, I can attest that the detail your going to is not an easy feat. Especially the prep and painting. That takes a special skill and patience that I never fully mastered. By the way. Excellent color choices.
Please pressure wash the fuel tank for my sanity before you put the rear fender back on :( That's like the first thing I did when I started working on my Ariens GT19. Also I am really temped to paint my JD314 the same color when I do the diesel engine swap, duel rear brakes and H3 swap to it this summer!!! Nice work man !!!

Our power came back sooner than they expected but was still out for 18 hours.

I started with your chainsaw repair video loved it then binged watch all your John Deere videos, I personally like Kubota but I love the mighty sub compact sized tractors. Keep the great work up and come to Ontario at some time.

I bought the same spray gun and it’s wonderful, my old Binks gun I don’t use anymore.
I'm thinking about that PTO protection and hoses bracket, in that tiny space maybe you can make a vertical bracket, and put that protection on the tractor.
Unfortunately a vertical bracket would be in the way of the rock shaft arm. I thought about doing that but think it would be too tight of a fit.
@@digdrivediy understood, the ideal way is whitout that protection, I don't think it's a big problem if you mill the soil without that protection. have a productive Saturday!
Phenomenal job so far on the tractor. Having done a couple of similar projects in the past, I can attest that the detail your going to is not an easy feat. Especially the prep and painting. That takes a special skill and patience that I never fully mastered. By the way. Excellent color choices.

Please pressure wash the fuel tank for my sanity before you put the rear fender back on :( That's like the first thing I did when I started working on my Ariens GT19. Also I am really temped to paint my JD314 the same color when I do the diesel engine swap, duel rear brakes and H3 swap to it this summer!!! Nice work man !!!
