Back in my Appalachee High School Chorus days we sang this song in Athens Civic Center. Exactly the words, melody, everything!! I still remember the bass part of this song. Man where have my high school days gone by?
Awesome singing. Because I like to nitpick I will mention that at about 2:10, the choir was a bit messy, singing at different times. Something that can be easily fixed. Incredible job.
Thanks for your post!! We are singing this song for contest. The interpretive break between Hu and sh is a little distracting to me... Was this a director decision....?
Actually the break you mentioned is exactly as Brazeal Dennard intended it. (I was fortunate enough to sing under his direction years ago.) This choir even performs the "blue note" properly. I give this director and this choir high praise for their work.
You guys have great unison but I feel this is a bit too traditional gospel (as in the kind for Latin pieces). This song is really meant for richer and less strident tones. The main issue is though it sounds too much like this is for a grade, you guys should really have more fun with it. With the background of this song singing it like your dead inside doesn't fit this kind of piece.
I don’t remember Sopranos being this high🤣either it was one girl that was singing magnificently high or the whole sopranos were apparently supposed to sing high to their limits😂
You have a good point and you other two need to calm the fuck down. At my school district, even the 2nd graders are off the book at the concert even with their Latin pieces. She didn't say anything rude, just gave her input as a choir director.
Intro Man the music is literally less than 4 pages long and you repeat HALF of it. Yes, they should be off book. Also their “director” doesn’t know how to hold a quarter note till the end of the beat.
Soloist where meh. They shouldn’t have lowered it for the bass.(meaning someone who can hit the notes should sing it) plus the conductor won’t hold the quarter note all the way through on the “Hu-sh, Hu-sh,” and doesn’t hold almost any of the other notes all the way through to the end of the beat. If I was judging this on a Concert MPA I would give this performance a “Good” at best. They should be off book as well. You basically repeat the same thing over and over again.
Yes, they did have hiccups, but don't you think that adding the extra group of people who could sing the lower, would have been a bit too small and no point since it cannot be heard. Adding more strength in one region would make it more powerful.

I sung this in my concert, and it was a director decision. It definitely sounds better long and smooth.
Agreed...Thanks!

Cool
A traditional spiritual with no traditional people, I'm sick of it.
I know right. This sound bland and copied

Just at a funeral. Song sung by an African American choir. This was good but not quite the same.
Chorus concert song
sounds better played at 3/4 speed...
You guys should be off book my sixth graders are off book
Mabinty Sesay That's rude. No one gives a shit. Don't tell their director how to direct.
Mabinty Sesay how about you get off RUclips and delete you goddamn account

This has no soul or spirit. Nice try though.

Why don't u try and sing a solo!!
The break in the hu..sh is exactly what the arranger, Brazeal Dennard, wanted. They got that part right. Just sayin...
Sorry -while they can sing, their voices cannot capture the tradition, culture and history of this African American spiritual.
afroman
love but boring
I love this song I song it in church 😍😍🤣😇😇
