  • El Pueblo de San Jose de Guadalupe, the first civil settlement in California, was founded by the Spanish on November 29 1777. This is the story of the founding of the pueblo and the growth of San Jose from the Spanish period to American rule. The homes of two men and their families, Luis Maria Peralta and Thomas Fallon, remain standing today in downtown San Jose providing us with the opportunity to illustrate the changes in lifestyle and compare the early cultures that formed the foundation of the modern city of San Jose.
