My father was a TE on the University of Hawai’i team that played Willamette Dec 6, 1941. He was also a cadet in the UH ROTC, folded into the Territorial Guard and placed on active duty the next day. He served in the Army, made sergeant, and was given a compassionate discharge after his mother died and his father suffered a stroke. Before the end of the war he received a commission in the USNR after graduating from the USMMA and served as an engineer on liberty ships in the Pacific and Indian Ocean.
