The Daihatsu Hijet is a cabover microvan and pickup truck produced and sold by the Japanese automaker Daihatsu since 1960. Despite the similarities between the Hijet name and Toyota's naming scheme for its trucks and vans (Hiace and Hilux), the name "Hijet" has been in use for Daihatsu's Kei trucks and Microvans since 1960, over two decades before Toyota took control. "Hijet", when transliterated into Japanese, is very similar to "Midget", one of Daihatsu's other mini-trucks. The Hijet competes in Japan with the Honda Acty, Subaru Sambar, Mitsubishi Minicab, Suzuki Carry and the Nissan Clipper.

When I was stationed in the Philippines, I had Daihatsu in a van configuration. I could seat 5 and had an enough space in the back for boxes, equipment, luggage. It was a 4 speed manual. However the driver was on the left side.
Seems like you could modify the seat mounts to get more human scale leg room. And I like the Bulpup reference.

Cool, do you know that Honda 4-wheeler rims will bolt up to that, and it took me a minute to find the brake fluid container. Invest in a winch if your going to be offroading in that, I had to spend a night in mine, when a winch would have had got me home.

i plan on getting another one. i bought one in 2007 got it street legal just to have them pull my tags 4 months later here in texas because they wasn't legal. so i sold it. and the next year they started that 25 year old rule . but its ok one year i will get another one.

I was looking to get side by side few years back and found for 3500-5000$ ur basically buying someone else’s junk they run hell out of. To get something better themselves.
So I kept eye on Suzuki samurai in this backyard it wasn’t being moved so month goes by and me and my don was up that way I say pull in I’m ask if it’s for sell. He says dad if it was for sale it have sign on it. Well anyway pulled in walk up close to it had pass it to get to there door well kinda lol. And sticker was dead tags was maybe dead few months now. Look decent not rusty pile. But not new. Knock ask is for sale. Ya my husband would sell it. He’s not here. Take my name number gives me his name number. He calls. Tells me price. I say I don’t have that much at moment but I want it ask him if want down payment show I mean business. I was going five grand down. He said no I’ll hold for ya for month. Waiting on my income tax.
Few weeks it’s in my yard. Run great. Needed few things that I knew top was shot convertible one.
The tail light was on the blink he was working on them when parked. He drove it to work at the mines. Got him new Toyota big one. Didn’t want drive little 55 mph max Suzuki. But it starts up don’t smoke don’t leak a drop that’s amazing there. 1988-1/2. And done some stuff to it little shackle lift 235-75-15 mudders thunder trac.
Sony radio lol and speakers 🔊 just factory size but good ones. Winch. And took old Suzuki water cold choke and all sensors to a Toyota Camry 1970 late model carb switch. Runs great made great side by side I can legally drive on road if wanted. I know little long comment but keep look if you see something you like ask. Be polite you never know. PS I have close to 3000$ and been offered 5000$. And told him don’t want get rid of it right now. Then he said how much more. Might paid six idk wasn’t for sale right now. Still have his number but not yet ready maybe kids will when I’m gone. lol me and my son hunting with it last year was blast. We where all over the mountain with heat to. Lol.

Just make sure that you religiously maintain that engine, and replace the timing belt asap, replacement parts for the 550 are non existent
