Update: Doede De Jong was eventually acquitted of all charges in 2018. Unfortunately he died in 2022.

What a fucking legend may he smoke in peace
Thanks for that update .I was about to do a search because this film is from 2016 or so .
I'm so glad because I kn😢w how he feels about the family home
I googled to find out what happened to Doede (the Netherlands grower): he was semi-successful in his appeal. They did find him guilty, but did not give out any punishment whatsoever because of his motives for growing.
thanks for saving me the time :)
Punishment, he lost all of his hard work years work mother plants etc. In the Netherlands this is how many of our weed strains have been killed of by police taking seed banks and mother plants. Old school strains are gone for good.
His was the most compelling part of the story. California put me through 18 months of hell for cultivation in 1991. They’ve never apologized nor offered to return my $10k in fines and court fees. Not to mention punitive damages for threatening to lock me up for 3 years, throwing me in a concrete box overnight and forcing me to piss in a tube for 8 months at the risk of immediate arrest. Dude rolls up and sells me a credit card sized piece of "art" that was just a solid red square on a business card that just happened to cost $100, as a gift for buying his beautiful artwork he gave me a bunch of weed, super friendly place.
Unfortunately without regulation you have no idea what’s in that weed. Synthetic chemicals to boost profits? Not everyone wants more expensive legal tested weed BUT it should be available for those who want access to clean safe weed.

@@JerriWest-fo8gj this video is 10 years old. They have Dispo's now.
I was stationed in Germany during the entire 1980s. I was a Tank commander in the 1st of the 1st Cavalry Regiment.
I visited Amsterdam a couple of times in a rented high powered BMW. The Autobahn is sick!!! Traveling at speeds about 120 mph! When you're a 23 year old American driving a luxury high horsepower automobile, heading towards a country famous for selling pot right in a coffee shop that's connected with a bar or nightclub, life is fabulous!! And the border guards were shutdown due to the Berlin Wall destruction. I was present at that incredible event back in 1989.
The border NL/Germany wasn't shut down until the Schengen agreement took effect, in 1995. Nothing to do with the fall of the wall, that was the old inner German border, nowhere near the Netherlands. I was stationed in the British Army in Germany 1991-93 and you always had to stop at the border then. However once in 1992 I walked through a residential street straddling the border, in an Aachen suburb, the street bypassed the border cabin on the main road. There were other little backroads where there wasn't a permanent checkpoint too but there were Zoll (customs) patrols there.
Just imagine. What you describe was everyday life for me. As a young German living near the border, that was my normal way of getting weed. Now it's no longer necessary because weed is legal in Germany
and whats left for the next generation but an economy so broken they'll never know international vacation or renting a car other than the lease they can barely afford.
that sounds absolutely awesome haha
I try telling my boomer parents the same thing but it's *pull yourself together*..yet they were able to buy a house by the age of 24, on a single wage, have three kids and several holidays a year. My dad still thinks you can get a 5% mortgage after 6 months of employment.
They sold out our generation, so they could live in luxury.

Organized crime simply pretends to be legit to get into the industry as the cartels are in California....easy to find and pay clean people to run things...thats why 70% of weed grown in California is exported for the illegal market
No guys , if all drugs gets decriminalised the only thing they would achive is people consuming more. The black market will rise since the prices will be much lower and people won't afraid to deal drugs or carry them because no one will care

So much has changed in DC, Maryland and Virginia. Need an updated episode 2024
It's all big corporations now! They gave out lottery rounds for Micro license in Maryland in April but you had to literally give in and give up your business plans, budget, background checks for your business partners and be qualified under their requirements which is a lot. It makes you want to try but they application and requirements turn you off if you're truly starting off from nothing.
Still turned into big Corporations running the industry. They gave away micro license for the fortunate but left that process to lottery picks and it required a certain portfolio. I tried to apply in Maryland and I'm still standing on the outside trying to get in! Funding is like selling your soul because it's only for those who have the transparency with business plans and gives the state all your intentions, I got as far as the application and couldn't submit because I didn't have the money to lose or complexity to submit.
Thank you for this documentary, i am dutch and i have learned allot of things from this about my country i never knew before.
I was born and raised in Belgium, the country next to the Netherlands, and worked with Dutch coffeeshops as a supplier (illegally). The whole "gedoogd" system they've got going doesn't do anything but invite criminality into a business that could otherwise be fully taxed and legislated. One of the guys I worked with had a grenade thrown into his coffeeshop because he wouldn't bend under the will of criminal gangs trying to muscle in. Legalise ALL drugs, let the government do what they love and profit off it, and GET PEOPLE THE HELP THEY FUCKING NEED. Nobody would be strung out on H/coke if they had a good quality of life.
preach this
I'm Dutch and fully agree. They really got the worst of both worlds with this system.

Growing your own is the only true legalization of cannabis. The sell in taxation of cannabis is not "legalization" it is "corporatization"
Better than nothing, believe me, I live in a country in which is still illegal and it's a nightmare, the weed is poor quality and very expensive and people can get in trouble for smoking, legalization Will be a dream and paying taxes on it would be right exactly how you pay on other things
Lets be honest, weed would not be legal in most of the places it is, if the local and state governments didn't tax it. For decades that has been the pitch to lawmakers, "legalize weed and tax it like alcohol and the state will have more money to treat addiction to hard drugs and tthe blackmarket for weed will shrivel up".
We were saying this in the 70s and it's taken this long to achieve it.
Maybe in the future things will loosen up more.
But it would be good to look at the conservative views around legalization and vote accordingly.

I worked in a coffeeshop in Amsterdam and they used a POS to track the quantity. What the coffeeshop owner says that its fine, its really not. I am Dutch, often visit Amsterdam, and occasionally smoke a joint myself. But honestly, compared to US laws, our laws are actually even weirder. Weed is illegal here, believe it or not! But the point is that the (coffeeshop) sale is legal, the use is legal, but possession is actually illegal. Even if you only have a gram, the police will take it but the point is that it's "gedoogd" which means tolerated. So, they will take it from you and it's still illegal to have it on you, but if it's less than 5 grams you won't get in trouble, no fine, no jailtime and no charges.

FYI: This year (2024) is the year in which government issued growing farms are, for the first time in the Netherlands, legally supplying weed to about 10 coffeeshops right now and its cheap as hell.
This is an old documentry, the Netherlands is currently doing a so called "cannabis experiment" wherin 10 cultivators are allowed to grow cannabis for 10 municipalities. The trail will take 4 years, if all goes well, we might see full legalisation. Vice please do an update documentry about this
