One of the reasons why most casual listeners don't "get it" is because Brandy does what she does so incredibly well and effortlessly and consistently people don't actually understand how amazingly complex and intricate and difficult it is.

It’s not just her stacking it’s:
    -placement
    -tone
    -emotion
    -agility
    -placement
    -riffs
She is the most intelligent singer around.
I’ve been around her and music flows of her. She is constantly singing and listening to herself and then trying different things.
Singing is her everything and if you around her for more than 15 mins u can sense that

I don’t understand the Beyoncé comparison. Beyoncé is a visual artist who’s music matches that. Brandy is a musician first. Entertainer second.

The one thing we don’t talk about enough is how much music this women actually puts out there . Whether she’s doing covers just for fun . Recording music for the tv shows she’s apart of . To all the features across literally almost every genre. This women is always on someone’s project . And knows how to sing and adapt to the different styles but also sounds like herself . As far as B7 goes , I think brandy just really wanted to create a cohesive album reminisce of old times . And even tho we all loved the other versions of some songs . She had to eventually place them all in place where they fit the tone and theme of the album and story she wanted to tell . The opening song threw me back I couldn’t get into it at first . It required me to really listen . Now it is my favorite song . I loved that the lyrics across the whole album were so specific to her way of thinking and was pure poetry . That requires studying . I always tell people you can’t watch a great movie one time and pick it all up . It took someone years to conceive and put it together . The concepts and themes take multiple viewings to fully understand . It’s the same with great music .

She is a musical genuine! First and foremost it’s her tone, technique, timbre of her voice coupled stacked harmonies that can’t be duplicated! Her choices in runs, adlibs and riffs! You can listen to her music decades from
Now and it will sound fresh!

It’s her tone, her runs and her attention to detail. She’s also literally the most melodic singer of all time. Maybe next to Enya, Bjork or Sade. It’s her passion and she has about a billion harmonies in her back pocket. She could make music forever and never run out of ideas like some singers do. Her talent goes on and on. She’s actually underrated if you want to know the truth. Well ..maybe not.

Beyoncé is huge! But does she has the same kind of musical impact as brandy!? No, so comparing the two doesn’t make sense. I have heard Beyoncé name way too often in this convo. People think she is the barometer that we must judge all black artist upon. It’s crazy.

They always bring up the 90s bc that’s when she was the most popular as if she didn’t release Full Moon & Afrodisciac in the 2000s that further propelled the way R&B singers sing today.
She was already a gifted child and evolved her voice.
Range, agility, harmonies, note selection (inner ear), runs & rifts, tonality, timbre, breath control… like come on. The legends love her , the modern singers borrow from her. Her gift and technique is the REASON.
I think some people are biased bc they either don’t have a developed ear, how popular she is, or how much they like her songs. You don’t have to like her songs to be aware of her skill level. Funny thing is the INDUSTRY gave her that nickname.

  • @nicim3730

Vocal placement and being able to switch up her tone to suit the song or section of a song is also a part of it.

I would definitely consider Brandy the Vocal Bible. The Full Moon/Afrodisiac/NSN albums laid out the blueprint for modern and what’s now referred to as futuristic r&b. Her tone, ability to switch her placement and those trademark runs and adlibs I hear in so many artists who’ve come after her definitely earn her that title.

Something that has been missing out of the Brandy “Vocal Bible” conversation is singer/songwriter Rahsaan Patterson’s influence on Brandy’s vocal styling. Rahsaan wrote and produced on Brandy’s first album and im telling you now alot of those riffs and runs have Rahsaan ALL OVER IT. I’m almost positive that it’s how Rahsaan sung the songs on the demo/reference track, and Brandy sung it just like he did. She used the style, took it, ran with it, remixed it a bit on later albums and here we are. But lets put Rahsaan Patterson’s name in the conversation and give the brother some credit.

Honestly she’s deserves the title, it’s like why not? Whitney was the Voice, did anyone ask why wasn’t Areatha Franklin called The Voice, because then WHO WOULD BE THE QUEEN OF SOUL????. I say that to say this: these are EARNED ATTRIBUTES that these ladies have EARNED in the own right based off the notoriety of their sound. it’s something about their sound and style that acquired “ THE TITLE”. Like go look in history and you’ll see titles like “RICHARD THE BRUCE” or “MARTIN THE SHORT, or RICHARD THE LIONHEART” that could have easily been given to anyone else of their time with the same quality but it is something about these individuals character that distinguished them from their peers. Brandy has a very distinguished sound and she does ALOT with her sound, and she’s now the THE VOCAL BIBLE, an attribute that will distinguish her from her peers of her time.

Ima be 100% honest here. I love Brandy’s tone. I find it to be very unique. However I always felt like that vocal bible stuff came from Brandy herself or one of her fans and they used Stacy Barthe to publicly say it. Maybe left some comments under Stacy’s picture or some and she ran with it. I can see her being a fan of Brandy’s and being appreciative of the opportunity to work with her and just oversold Brandy’s as opposed to her experience working with Brandy. Either way opinions are just that, opinions. There’s a difference in one’s sound and one’s voice. There’s plenty of vocalists from Brandy’s era alone that I would give that title to…Lauryn Hill, Beyoncé, Tamia, Toni Braxton, Deborah Cox, Kelly Price, & hell even Monica on a good day especially in her earlier years! Her voice has wayy more versatility that Brandy’s and I’m not just referring to Monica’s range. Nonetheless I still can appreciate Brandy’s contribution & efforts to R&b music. I think Brandy is an Icon because of her career as a whole but not because of her vocals.

I love the chat about “toning it down”. For example B7 would’ve been better recieved with the right first single. “Rather Be” was so beautiful. Simple but still displayed her as “the vocal Bible” with its layering, stacks, and tone! Rollout is her key to success. Single choices lack and are so busy sonically, the listener is lost before the album even drops. Marketing is her fault as an artist nowadays.
Love her to death. She will always be my fave! Fans need to choose the next single tho! 🫡❤️. Thanks for a great conversation
