Brandi doesn't OVERSING, she lets her voice tell the story without throwing you out of it with TOO many belts and or riffs & runs. That's letting the song LIVE without trying to outdo the instrumentation, THAT actually helps the voice shine and stand out more as a vocal instrument. True definition of not trying too hard.

even as a white kid in australia, growing up watching Brandy rise it was clear she was all round talented. the original broadcast of MTV awards with brandy and monica showed how effortlessly brandy out sung monica… ive only found later re- engineered versions where they remixed monica. even when i had no singing training i could tell how good Brandy was for her choices, her restraint, her tone, now ive done a tiny bit of singing class, it only confirms everything i suspected. you just don’t get that level of skill very often in popular music

Part of why she is underrated is because she didn’t crossover during a time when the musical landscape was changing in the direction of pop and image. The 90s still dominated with R&B. The 2000s shifted to very image conscious brands. She tried to go along with the 2000s trends but it didn’t work for her. It is quite sad because she is actually the foundation for what a lot of these girls use in their music today yet they still can’t achieve her level of vocal arrangement.

Thank lawdd you made this video. I'm a Artist and in the music world Brandys layered lead solo voice is something you literally need like 3 to 4 people to pull off. She was blessed with vocal cords that has a specific dynamic depth and range.

When I was a kid we only watched Cinderella with Brandy in it, when I learned what the original character looked like my kid brain immediately rejected that and knew Brandy was the real Cinderella 😊 I've loved her since I was young and she'll always have a special place in my heart

This was EXCELLENT!!! Brandy is the foundation and influence for so many singers and this “minisode” captivated the WHY in its short 11min. This was very well produced and it would be great to see a full episode of this.

This is probably strange, but maybe not but one of my favorite Brandy tracks is actually off her first album. It's the I Dedicate interlude Part 3! She sings it so beautiful and I feel it is a great example of her vocal range. I still listen to it over and over! ❤

She literally is a "Song Bird"
My lil sis is a DIE HARD B-Wood fan, (also my sis sings just as well) so she knows notes, etc & she made me recognize 1 thing that changed my entire outlook on singers, my sis was like... "It's the fact that she can get so ( *Low* ) so loudly. Then it dawned on me not many singers that can pull that off cept T Braxton.

Yes! There can't be enough fan videos made about Brandy. Every observation is on the money. 'Laypersons' tend to underrate her. As I've long said, she's a musician's singer. I don't know anyone serious about music (esp. R&B/soul/jazz etc) who doesn't greatly appreciate her. As someone who enjoys singing, I love listening to Brandy. Her tone alone is intoxicating but she has a musician's sensibility in how she uses her voice (phrasing, harmony etc). Her vocal control is nuts. Whilst a lot of singers use melisma, the subtlety and complexity of her runs...as they said 'crystal clear' and 'flexible'. This video is a delight. Just so wonderful to hear vocalists break down Brandy's appeal and get into the weeds of the technique.

this video was very thoughtful......i think we need the follow-up: " documentary of R&B music at the turn of 20th century" mainly discussing Brandy more in-depth.......i.e. her use of auto-tune { after being forced} vocal stacking harmonies mixed voice melisma ad libs vibrato and timbre.......Brandy help reaffirm what the 1980's legends' established in the R&B genre---- (Patti La Belle Dionnie Warwick Arthea Franklin Gladys Knight Tina Turner etc) Brandy helped maintained the R&B integrity with thoughtfulness innovation and imagination......
