Agree. I've been through a major earthquake and it takes a long time. Five years minimum, and probably more. Of course, is it intelligent to even rebuild on these barrier islands and will any insurance really be available?
That’s what everyone is saying…It won’t be easy, but I’m thinking they’ll bounce back quicker than what people are projecting. They are still recovering from shock. I bet Ft Myers beach bounces back to 90% within 2 -3 years time.
Yes, after hurricane Opal came in and destroyed Panama City, Fort Walton, Mexico Beach, it took about 3yrs to kinda be a city again, and after Hurricane Michael I think they are still recovering. So sad😪 I used to live about a half an hour away from Panama City Beach and that was my go-to Beach and after Hurricane Michael I started going to Fort Myers and now look at it now . Prayers going out to all 🙏😪
At some point, I think that rebuilding on these barrier islands (after the next hurricane, or maybe the next after that), just isn't going to happen any more.
Hey I Live here Cape Coral Florida I am still traumatized Over this Hurricane. Yeah I only lost my Lanai and ceiling in Lanai and to some it's minor to me watching it not being able to stop it nor can I fix it I'm stressed. Downtown house of pizza made it through the storm and is back up and running. I live in Canada and my sister lives in ft. Myers. That was my favorite place there
I think she’s referring to tourists ..likely inquiring on social media..and places like Facebook.. people that are totally oblivious to the reality of the situation on the ground. My wife and I go every year and were slated to leave on the 16th of this month for our vacation..needless to say that isint happening. I am bummed..but I’ve list nothing compared to these people…I thought about still trying to go and maybe assist with recovery efforts, but too many unknowns. It may not even be safe for ordinary people to waltz in there if the Areas unsafe…I don’t want to be a burden. Hopefully some angel investors or big money donors will really step in here…( in addition to federal aid, which we all know is slow coming..). Like other coastal areas in Fl, Fort Myers beach was a major Trump stronghold. It would be cool to see his team reach out and do what they can.
I’m glad we have someone providing a video so we can comprehend the damage, but it would be nice if he knew the area. The restaurant he referenced is or was the Beached Whale.
Need to clean up Times Square and have all the food trucks (and other businesses) come down there and stay down there for awhile while everything is rebuilt.
What's to clean up? That whole area has been leveled. What's left needs to be bulldozed. As far as a recovery, it's five to ten years, and that's if insurance companies, builders, etc., are willing to take another risk building on barrier islands. As far as where the climate is heading, that's another issue.
@@roachtoasties Are you stupid? Everything you mentioned is part of CLEANING UP!!!! There is debris everywhere. Do you even live here? Climate change is a hoax.
I am asking this question again. Does any know why Boat owners don't move the Boat out of the way of a Hurricane knowing 5 to 10 days in advance location of the inevitable storm .
72 hours before the storm hit Ft Myers wasn’t in the cone of landfall. The storm changed direction very quickly. Also many people with homes and boats only live there part time during the winter. A lot of the homes in FL are second homes that are occupied part of the year.
@@coolmtnman1 What wetland? I am asking about a specific event about boats. If your calling people who live in this area stupid over land that was decided decades ago then you are what we call a "NUTJOB" Stay with the program long enough to focus on something other then you far left bombastic view of everything that hurts your feelings.
A lot of those people don't have jobs anymore. Most folks work at the hotels or restaurants on the beach and it will be awhile before it all builds up again.
People with only service industry skills (like people who work in hotels and restaurants) will probably relocate to other areas. They can't wait five to ten years, which is how long recovery from disasters like this takes, if this area is rebuilt (issues there too).

I’m not looking for a pissing match here but-your being petty at a bad time.
You still don't get it. There will be no tourists this Christmas. No snowbirds. There is no place for tourists to stay. No homes left, no jobs, no future. And you complain they are not focused on your wants. Wow. You won't even let them grieve as a community. Just unbelievably entitled , aren't you?

I’m not immune to pain and heartache that the people of Southwest Florida are currently suffering. However, I’m also a very pragmatic thinker. I’m asking myself how do we prevent the same mistakes so that future generations don’t have to suffer like this from future hurricanes long after all of us are dead and buried? First off, we stop building on barrier islands, and we have a government buyout of the land on these islands. We don’t allow these people to rebuild on barrier islands, because it’s just too dangerous and risky! Barrier islands are very obviously not meant for permanent human habitation. It’s absolute insanity to keep doing the same things over and over again with each damaging hurricane, and expect a different outcome when the next bad hurricane comes around! If these people want to rebuild their life, then the government needs to lay down the law, and only allow rebuilding in safer locations. That’s how we leave a legacy behind so that future generations don’t have to suffer this horror when a bad hurricane threatens them.

When you live in a hurricane or tornado zone like in Oklahoma, no one should be surprised when a hurricane or tornado strikes where you live in these areas. If you live in a desert like Southern California, Nevada, or Arizona, don’t be surprised when you don’t have water. You live in a desert. You should expect droughts. Sad that people choose to live in paths of hurricanes, tornadoes and droughts. Nothing to see here. You chose to live there knowing full well hurricane season starts in September each and every freakin year. It’s awesome to have a house on or near the ocean until it isn’t. Fact!! Cheers!!
50 years ago Ft Myers beach was just that...a cool little place
Lots of average-minded blue-collar workers, service-oriented businesses, retirees with no flood insurance
I'm thinking that it could take a decade to really recover. Very sad, I spent a lot of time there over the years.
That's about how long it took the Mississippi gulf coast to come back from Katrina, so that's not a bad estimate.

FEMA needs to bring in portable housing (trailers) for all the residents once everything is cleaned up.
Biden is too busy in Puerto Rico thinking he is actually in Florida...
Trailers are some of the problems
@@tww6488
I agree, but what else can be done to get people (and the beach) back on their feet?
FEMA messed that up too bad after Katrina. Better to let someone else be in charge of getting a place to live for displaced persons.
Really? Just a small hurricane could wash those trailers out to sea. If there are trailers, they should be placed far inland.
Ok....less emphasis on the guide and more on the actual destruction should have made this video alot more interesting.

If you can't afford hurricane insurance, don't move to Florida. Don't expect the federal government (taxpayers) to bail you out.

Because it is constantly hit by hurricanes. What sane company would insure them at normal prices? What sane company would insure them at all?
