Pellet power & performance - A hunter's guide to shooting air rifles

  • This film clearly explains the fundamentals of setting up your air rifle for the type of hunting you want to do. We compare drop-off between pellet sizes, look at holdover, and show how important it is to zero your rifle at the right distance to improve accuracy. High speed video is used to help us understand how the pellet flies through the air and the compensation needed to make a clean kill. Once happy with the rifle on targets we then head out into the field for rabbits, pigeons and crows. Roy is using an Air Arms S410.

    Why shoot pigeons?
The woodpigeon is recognised as the UK’s number one agricultural pest and causes millions of pounds of damage (AHDB consultation 10-40% loss in yield. Equivalent loss of £125/ha for Oil Seed Rape, £250/ha for peas, £350-£1250/ha for brassicas) to agricultural crops every year including cereals, brassicas, oilseed rape, peas and salad crops. Pigeon damage reduces the yield, quality, appearance and ultimately the saleability of the crop. Pigeons can also cause damage in gardens and allotments - pecking at the leaves and ripping off portions, often leaving just the stalks and larger leaf veins. They may also attack and strip buds, leaves and fruits off trees and bushes.
The UK woodpigeon population was last estimated at 5.4 million pairs in 2009. Densities of wood pigeon are the highest in Eastern England, coinciding with the highest concentration of horticultural production.
Wild pigeon (game) is natural and free range, and it is one of the healthiest meats available today. It’s low in cholesterol and high in protein… and, quite simply, delicious.
    Why shoot rabbits?
Rabbits are a major agricultural pest, costing the British economy an estimated £100million a year*. More than half of this figure is accounted for by damage to agricultural crops, with winter wheat, barley and oats being the most vulnerable. In terms of annual yield, a loss of 1% per rabbit per hectare (2.5 acres) has been recorded but overall yields can be reduced by up to 20%. Rabbits also graze on pasture, impacting on newly sewn areas, reducing available grass for livestock and the yield of crops cut for silage.
Wild rabbits burrow under roads, railways and through archaeological sites, causing subsidence and other damage to buildings.
They also contaminate the soil with their urine and droppings, so nothing but weeds can survive. In addition, rabbits chew through the bark of trees, killing nursery stock or young saplings and preventing the natural regeneration of woodland.
A Government survey in 1995 put the UK rabbit population at 37.5 million. This number is thought to have dramatically increased. Farmers and landowners now have a statutory responsibility to manage rabbit populations on their land, to prevent them causing damage to neighbouring properties.

Thank you to the people involved in making this video. I found it extremely honest and relevant and found alot in common with my experience.
As a fairly newby, I did exactly the same thing, zeroing in my air rifle, in the field. I use a legal limit 12ftlb air rifle .177 calibre.
I found difficulty in hitting my shots at pigeons up in the trees. I guessed that through gravity and the pellet climbing, I would have to use extra holdover.
However, through experience, I've personally found this not always to be the case.
I've personally found pigeon up in trees at forty yards, zeroed at forty yards, doesn't require holdover.
It really is a learning curve, with experience required. The good side is, if you use too much holdover, you'll miss your intended altogether. So that means no wounding, which is a win-win for me.
    Thankyou to you all.
    Best wishes.

      Hello Fieldsports Channel.
Thank you for your like, to my like comment.
What I forgot to write is, when folks like you, post films like this, it gives ordinary people like me confidence to continue and persevere with what I'm trying to achieve. It also makes me feel normal when I seem to be facing the same challenges and hurdles as the pros.
It's also immensely satisfying to achieve your goal in what you are trying to do with the added backup and enthusiasm your films give.. Thankyou.

Thank you for taking the time and trouble to make this video. I learned quite a bit that will prove useful as I make my first foray into the world of air rifles. I've been an outdoorsman and hunter since my youth. I currently use a compound bow, but only for game that's on the ground. This will help provide healthy, nutritious food for me and my family by giving me the ability to gather food quietly from the trees as well as on the ground.

Being from the South, I had "a bit of a chuckle" at the sight of a Brit in field camo. But this is an excellent tutorial for dialing in your air gun. We can shoot most anything we like firearm-wise around these parts but air guns are near and dear to a large majority of us. Bettering our chances of an ethical, clean kill is always a priority (unless it's our daughter's suitors in question...).
    Cheers.

Thank you for taking the time to show this video, I'm an ex target shooter, used to shooting low powered smooth air rifles and small bore long rifles, now I'm been drafted in by my girlfriend to control our rabbit population in the orchard as they are under mining it and she gets the lawn mower stuck which damages the steering, and not to mention break an ankle in the holes! I have acquired a powerful 12ft/lb .22 springer and now will look into a good spring rated mill dot scope, I can range OK by the apple trees but I might put some markers out, I will mostly be shooting from the window. For now I'm learning to group with the springy springer. I will zero at 30yrds and see if that helps. Thanks.

That rabbit heard it coming his way.
His reaction time wasn''t fast enough to duck but the fact it went over his head helped. Just for your knowledge a projectile makes a hissing sound when its headed in your direction.
I found out because i was standing outside smoking one day and heard shots from the next block over and a SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS sound just as i heard several plinking sounds as stray bullets hit a light pole above my head that i was leaning on.
I have never forgotten that sound.

What a fantastic video. I have been looking for something along these lines for a bit. You showed the trajectory for both .22 and .177 and with such detail. I never thought about zeroing in like that. I use open sights and a 10.5 grain .177 pellet from a Webley Vulcan and usually just zero at average shooting distance about 20 yards. I am going to invest in a scope and really do some honing in after seeing this. Thanks again from the US.

I'm going to settle the whole anti hunting concept right here. I work as a conservationist, and there are times I have to tap a few critters for various reasons. Disease, over population, and the risk associated to property and crops are just a few reasons why I have to kill them. If I trap a mink I have to kill it humanely, shooting it works well, better than breaking it's neck or stoving it's head in with a baton, which is the only other methods. Now if it's safe to do so, I will eat what I've killed, and I use it's fur. It's a way of life for me. Now I'm not barbaric, I love nature and the critters around, that's why I love my job. However I understand that we have to control the populations or we get over run and they starve to death. Barbarism is causing needless suffering, something I'm completely against, I kill humanely. Now I take it if you can't stand animals dying, if your dog was dying of cancer you'd call the vet evil for ending it's suffering. I'm sorry but when I cull old deer it's because their teeth are bad and they will starve to death, in that spence I'm just doing a vets job with a high powered rifle.

Once I was riding my motorcycle in the rain.
A "momma cat" with a kitten in her mouth crossed my path and I ran it over.
Turned out it was a mink stealing a kitten.
So I saved the kitten and my bike, and cut the mink in half 👌

I cull pigeons at my place of work (we store thousands of tons of animal feed) and they are wise to hunters. They know when you rise your rifle and strategically move around to avoid the shot.

Watching that rabbit reminded me of a hunt I had. It’s like when they “jump the string” when you’re bow hunting. It’s that sound from the weapon when sending a sub-sonic round or arrow. They hear it just before it hits them. I think that’s why it’s important to have a good silencer for your air rifle. I had a rabbit just sit there after I took a head shot on him with my 22 at roughly 100 yrds. He just sat there and gave me a second shot. Second shot went right through the head clean. When I had got to him I had pierced both his ears with the first shot.

    • @stan690

You pierced the rabbits ears with your first shot...and it just sat there? I smell something.....

    • @visamedic
      @visamedic 2 года назад

@@stan690 You have no idea how tripped out I was. First of all they just freeze like they can retroactively disappear from your view by just turning to stone. All I can think is he really didn’t think I saw him or hit him. But before god, when I picked him up after the second shot he had two perfect holes toward the base of each ear with a light line on the neck. Only explanation I can come up with is the first bullet pierced his ears. When you folded them back it all lined up. Weirdest thing I’ve seen to date hunting.

Mil dots are only consistent on full magnification. If you alter the zoom or magnification up or down the mil dot compensation distance changes. The only way around this is to purchase a more expensive first focal plane scope. The reticle size will then get bigger or smaller as you zoom in and out meaning that the mil dots will always be accurate at all magnification settings.

Great professional video. All air gunners should watch this. The trajectory curve shows that you should not be targeting live quarry beyond 35 yes with a 12ft/lb 22 - the drop off and windage are too great to be sure of a clean kill.

    • @harshmadan6518
      @harshmadan6518 3 года назад

I just loved how he shows his misses to, thats real hunting, you fail, you will fail, thats how you learn, and some people skips those parts just to show that they are really skilled, no man, when shooting rifles or snipers, you gotta keep in mind about wind too, it changes every second, so there is a 40% chance of missing the shot, and my missing i don't mean you don't kill him, but maybe you get the target on his shoulder, or on his legs insted of a head shot. But thats how you get better! Practice. And yeah if you shooting a real .50 CAL then nigga we should hangout sometime.

So I was wondering if my air rifle that shoots 4,5mm 8g Predator Polymag pellets at roughly 199 MPS (656 FPS) would guarantee a clean kill for a reasonably well (general chest area) aimed shot. I wouldn't want them to get wounded and die slowly in pain. Help would be greatly appreciated

While I am not anti-gun by any means (I have a "rotation" of concealed handguns.) I haven't shot a critter in over 50 years. And in my current situation I don't see the need or the attraction. Your results may vary. However I do have several air guns that I can shoot on my property without breaking any gun laws and I found this video fascinating. Nicely done!

excellent video great shooting and the zeroing is all well done,, the one thing i would say is that in every shooting scenario i have been involved in or taught is that you never shoot without a solid background, over a ridge or roof line,, a silhouette is a wonderful clear target but if you miss the pellet is going to land somewhere you didn't anticipate, the crow you clipped is a case in point,, i'm sure you were in the perfect location but other people who follow your example may not be,, really good video

Try an FAC rifle? 12 lb rifles are ridiculous !
    I prefer my .17 HMR!
Utterly efficient so is a silenced .22 LR
I use RWS sub sonic and it works!

on a sub 12 ft,lbs rifle is it ethical to try to take game at 50 + yards
with the drop in velocity you are running very low on a already low energy.
the only reason i ask is that i do not really know the ballistics of the 177-.22 cal sub 12 ft,lbs. At 50 + yards is it enough?
Having the advantage here of having a much larger "power" curve with what I would hope close to if not the same accuracy.
BTW. 20 yards for a crow?
You cant get 50 yards to a crow on the west cost of Oregon with blow gun let alone a air rifle

I really do not get why some people react with such emotion to videos like this. Mankind is a predator, our forward facing eyes and binocular vision attest to it. Folks get on and complain in the comments, but if you eat meat, if you drive a car, if you use electricity, if you live in a house, if you wear cotton or wool, if you wear jewellery if you do any number of mundane modern activities then you too have contributed to the death or displacement of some critter.
The best thing that the animal lovers can do for the wild animals is to commit mass suicide, let the creatures take over. Very few men live in harmony with the environment and those primitive tribes that do are hunters. I challenge any vegan, go live in the bush and try to survive on nuts and grains alone....you will quickly be killing and eating with the best of them.
