  • A good friend showed me a channel with few views containing clips of subway videos taken in the late 80s. I felt that these clips needed curation and exposure to a wider audience. After many hours of work, I came up with this. The R-10 was the SMEE with the most character and history of interesting pre-MTA paint schemes. Jimi Hendrix is thought to be the best electric guitarist in rock history and this song, performed live in 1969 demonstrates the truth of that.

Chris Herbert, I'd be right there with you, man!! When i first rode the R10s, they were real grimy, dirty, covering up their orig. paint scheme of two-tone grey with orange belt line!! Loved them!! Yeah, they could haul ass if needed!! Well, each truck had two 100hp traction motors, so their acceleration and maintained speed were up there. They weighed a tad less than the R 16s, a bit less complex.

Loved the R-10s! They will forever be synonymous with the A, the line they faithfully served for 29 years. I rode on them many times on the CPW Express dash, where they thundered and blazed past seven local stops in a row. And if you were standing on the n/b platform at 81st St. when they ripped past, you got an earful. I wish they'd kept the racing stripe paint scheme longer - that was my favorite!

8AveExp,,myself as well!! I hold a special place in my heart for these cars too!! Loved them!! Would loved to have operated them! They were first with dynamic braking, reversible running lite colors via the reverse key, better traction power, and of course, were the first designated SMEE cars!!

I absolutely LOVED the ACF-built R-10s!! They were the first actual trains that I rode as a bona fide subway, LIFE under Atlantic Ave out of Jamaica notwithstanding, as the IND A train on the Fulton St/8th Ave Line, boarding @ Broadway/E.N.Y, free-transferring from the BMT "15/Jamaica Local" up above @ Eastern Pkwy Station. Was a little scared, trepidated(was only about 8 yrs old!)..And when it dedcended into the Cranberry St. Tunnel, after High St/Brklyn Bridge station, could feel my ears pop because of air pressure differences in that tube..kinda freaked me out! Recall them being a tad noisy, compressor operated slower than the ones on the Jamaica Line R-16s. Air engines operated the doors, as conductor had to mount/dismount step plates outside car ends betw cars! what a learning experience that was!! They, at time, were the only units serving as the A train. All other IND lines used the pre-war R1/R9's, fr. the 1930's. Was great to find, view this video. Thank God there are others like-minded as myself, that have the passion for these old warriors, built to last!!

You've captured some amazing footage of the R10s. I rode them for decades from East New York Brooklyn to the Rockaways on the A,C, and E line. Back then they charged a double fare to go south of Broad Channel. The R10s looked good no matter what color scheme they wore, but the original two tone grey with red stripe was my favorite.

I happened to have visited relatives there in E.N.Y, summer of 1982..They lived on Miller Ave, one blk over fr. Van Siclen Ave BMT Station over Fulton St! Every NYC subway train I rode was badly graffitied/tagged..some had fluorescent bulbs not Even working!! Rode the R10s, R14s (IRT Mainline), R16s there on Jamaica Local, R36WF on the Flushing Line, 7 train, R27/R/30s,and the relatively newer R42s on the F train(Essex/Delancey St transfer)...Wheww!! And don't forget very noisy!!!! But I was always at the RFW so I didn't really pay attention to all of the MTA' s flaws. Riding the trains in the 80"s as a kid was therapy for me. I didn't know then that they were having budget issues then which was why trains were breaking down or derailing.

It's sure great seeing the R 10 cars running on various lines. I rode them for so many years. I wish they hadn't scrapped them. I liked them in the dark green colors much similar to the R 1 to R 9 cars. I rode them as the A Train in the late 1960's & throughout the 1970's.& of course bthe CC LOCAL later the C LOCAL I remember the HH FAR ROCKAWAY SHUTTLE as the R 1 cars. Of course all the R 32 on the F TRAIN. Unfortunately i didn't know of the goodbye to the R 10 fan trip & missed it. A treat to see the R 44 , The Red R 30. Do i remember the many colors of them they were all my favorite. (Not the graffiti). I may have spotted the R 38 cars & the R 68 cars. What a memorable video of transit history in this wonderful video.👋👋👋👋👋👋👍✅

Between 9:39 and 9:43 is the train operator shutting the head lights on and off? I remember the train lights would flicker on and off but those would only affect the train lights, the lighted roll signs on the side and the marker lights on top of the head lights. Not the actual head lights. Plus the car looks like an R68 and from what I remember, those R68s never did and to this day, doesnt have flickering lights
