The Famous Flåm Railway

Flying into Oslo, Norway, it was cold and raining. The temperature was minus 5 Celsius, so it was time to rug up.
We board the train for a five-hour journey to connect with the famous Flåm Railway. The train ascends from sea level to 865 meters before we transfer to the Flåm Railway for a spectacular descent through the mountains to the village of Flåm at sea level. Though only 20 kilometres long, this breathtaking journey takes about an hour.
The Flåm Railway is considered one of the most spectacular rail journeys in the world. It winds its way from the mountain station at Myrdal (867 meters above sea level) to the fjordside village of Flåm, nestled deep in the Aurlandsfjord-a branch of the renowned Sognefjord. Construction of the railway began in 1924, and it officially opened in 1940.
Originally built to connect the villages along the Sognefjord with the Oslo-Bergen rail line, the route follows the Flåm Valley, passing through numerous tunnels and across dramatic bridges. With a gradient of 5.5%, it is the steepest standard-gauge railway in Europe.
The journey offers breathtaking scenery, with steep mountain slopes, cascading waterfalls, and dramatic landscapes, making it one of Norway’s most popular attractions.
After an enjoyable overnight stay in Flåm, we continue the next day by electric ferry along the Aurlandsfjord.
