Well, I just made it and it sucks water out of a cup real easy! As soon as my wife gets home our Nigerians are going to get a surprise! Thanks for posting the video! I hope this makes it a lot easier for us!
Made this today to your exact specifications and it works excellent! Thank you so much for posting this! My hands are too big for my Nigerians as well. Just made my life and the girls life considerably less stressful!
I bought a 1 acre plot a couple of years ago, and have been trying to turn it into a profitable backyard farm. One of the things I eventually want to do is get a small herd of goats, and milk them, using a machine like you have, just as soon as I rehab the barn structure and put up a fence to keep them in their part of the yard, and away from my vegetables. Wish us luck
Great video. I just found this last night, went to the store this morning to get stuff and put it together in about 15 minutes. Tried it out on our Nigerian, and it worked great! Thanks for the idea. This was her first milking and she was quite fussy. One thing I did was to use the hot glue for the tubing connection to the lid, but I heated up the metal of the lid with a lighter about as hot as I could get it without damaging anything(took about 4 seconds), put the hot glue on and it stuck very well.
Great video. My neighbor just had a Miller goat give birth and has know idea as to milking so I’m going to help him. This will make life a whole lot better. I will have to get the unit from Walmart and put it together, thanks for the info.
No.........no glue! Drill hole slightly bigger and get rubber grommet to place in the drilled hole then cram the air hose in the grommet. It will go in hard but it will go and seal no issues. Then youll be fully sanitary
Well done! I have made two of these. I have also had to replace the batteries in that particular pump, which was a job. But luckily, I've got the skills to do that sort of thing. Very nice and informative video. Even after milking goats for many years I learned something from this.
well first i made a milker using a manual brake bleeder as a pump--one that you see all over RUclips for DIY milkiers. It TOTALLY did not work. the brake bleeder was unreliable in making a vacuum and my had was exhausted manually squeezing it. Total dud. So i bought the pump here today and will try it tomorrow morning. i think this will definitely do the trick!! Thank you for such a detailed how-to...
Nice video. You can equally well use intravenous drip tubing, which has Luer Lok ends for Luer Lok syringes. These tubes will also fit standard syringes.
I'm going out tomorrow to pick up a used human breast pump (electric) designed for dual pumping. It has adjustable suction and pulsation- and because it is about 20 yrs old, it is only $10! I'm looking forward to seeing how well it works with the setup you demonstrate here!
I have tried to build this very Milker from other videos, but never could see what was done. You have shown very plainly how to make it! I am getting a La Mancha in milk in a couple of weeks and went for another search for DIY milking machines. Thank you so much for making it look so much easier! I have put rubber grommets in the metal top, it holds the tubing very nicely. I got them from Home Depot. And was thinking that a rubber band might be helpful as the “3rd” hand needed to on the suction pump. Thanks again. Ronda, Merry Noise Farm, Elmo TX.
A few suggestions. First if you use food grade silicone tubing it’s pliable enough you can get a seal without glue. Also use a hand pump brake bleeder for the suction. It has a pressure gauge so you know how much pressure you are applying. If you overdo the pressure you can hurt the goat.
You don't drink a lot of goats milk??!! Our Dwarf Nigerian goats have the BEST milk! It's almost like drinking straight cream. I've given it to people who have never had it before. Once I get them over the " Goat?? EWW" factor, their dumbfounded by how delicious it is. Boy....now I want a glass, guess I'll go get one! EXCELLENT video, as always.
I really enjoy your videos! We have three Nigerian Dwarfs that just kidded so I am going to make this pump to make it a little easier on us! I sure hope I can get the same results as you! I don’t think I have as good a hand at building stuff as you do, but I am going to try!😁
So don't mean to bring you down, but you are asking for a case of mastitis when you don't dip prior, clear the teats, and then dip after you are done emptying her udder. Also, being a CVT (surgery tech) letting her kick is also transferring bacteria from her hooves to her teat via cross contamination and it's teaching her bad habits (she's getting grain while she kicks). We had one doe that was such a kicker she'd jump off the stand first year. It sounds mean, but you can strap her legs down with dog leashes and then you eliminate the bacteria contamination. This past year, she only kicked the first day and now she stands nicely without the straps. Also, you can sterilize those plastic hoses with chlorhexadine solution diluted. I would not trust bleach as it will degrade the glue and it loses it's effectiveness after a couple days open. Cheers on inventing a cool alternative tho!
So sorry. Typically, when you milk an animal, there is an involved process of cleaning the udder, dipping the teat into a liquid (teat dip) that might have chlorhexadine solution diluted in it as pathogens can hide in the openings of the teat you can't wash, then you express at least 3 or 4 times to clear any pathogens further up, then it's safe to milk, and after, you'd dip again to kind of "sanitize" the duct to seal it up before the animal gets down. You should always ask to see somebody "milk" before buying RAW milk for consumption or maybe I'm just a bit OCD since I've worked in surgery. Bacteria can go both ways-in your mouth or up an udder.
I think it is a good idea to make sure the tubing is food grade. I got some tubing and didn't notice until I got home that it had the Calif. prop 65 warning that said that the tubing would expose you to vinyl chloride and styrene. Maybe breast pump tubes, or soda tubes, or beer making tubes? It just seems like if you're going to the trouble of milking goats you'd want food grade tubes.
shut off valves on the hoses would allow you to build vacuum in the system and then all you have to do is turn the valve on. You can also add a jar or use a larger jar so you don't over fill.
Good invention, I love DIY!!! Cute goats, I hear goat milk mozzarella is the bomb!!! Roots and Refuge channel has a video how to make it! Jess is really great, you'll like her a lot!!! TY
This is a really nice build. I might add some kind of grommet or gasket to the syringe barrels to be extra sure the corners don't dig in and break the skin. Great thinking with putting the plunger back in when one side finished early. I really like this one! I'm planning to have small goats, and those usually come with small teats. I'm looking forward to hand milking when I get there, but I'm glad to have this idea in my back pocket in case I have some kind of injury or something, and I like knowing I have a way to make it easy for someone to step in for me temporarily if need be. Did it take long for your girls to acclimate to the milker? If I don't plan to make it my primary milking method, I suspect that it would be wise to get them at least somewhat trained to this, just in case it becomes necessary. I've heard goats can become quite disturbed when their routine is broken even slightly. Thanks for sharing this!
They are getting easier and easier to milk. I am in my second week of milking them and they now just jump up on the stand and seem to enjoy the process (or at least the sweet feed) I don't think it would be bad to switch back and forth from hand to machine. Once the recognize the process they would be fine
Really interesting video. Did you have to get the goats used to the pump, such as the noise, the feel of the syringe tubes on their teats, etc. If so how did you do this. Or did they just take to it without any issues?
They have only been doing this for the last week and are getting used to it pretty well. They now barely kick and go right to the stand on their own. The noise of the pump never seemed to bother them
Love the videos, an air pump from a fish tank could be a simpler solution than the vacuum sealer, as they are designed to connect with a 1/4" air line, just a thought. Take care.
