Thanks for checking out Dreamcatcher's Boca! Dreamcatcher are a rather unique group in K-Pop as they're the only group who always includes rock and metal instrumentals in their title tracks, though it can vary from track to track how pronounced it is. This earned them the name "The face of Rock in K-Pop" from Rolling Stone India. They're a very talented group who have an extremely diverse discography. While their title tracks all have rock and metal influences, their b-sides span dozens of genres and sub-genres including pop, edm, trap, trance, rock, ballad, jazz, funk, reggae, and much more.
I really appreciated your comments on their vocal performance. Unfortunately, Dreamcatcher is severely underrated in most K-pop circles due to their sound and darker concepts, but I've always found vocal coaches tend to love their sound and vocal ability.
I saw you ask how they were live in the chat and while I've not seen them in person myself, they are known for being extremely good live. They always have the mics on and are excellent performers.
If you'd like to check out another song of theirs then one of their more recent comebacks, Bonvoyage, would be a good one. It has a progressive rock influence that mixes some softer ballad-esq sections with their hard-hitting rock instrumentals. I'm specifically recommending Bonvoyage because there are two live performances of it that you can check out with the music video. One is from the It's Live RUclips channel and is performed with a live band. The other is on the TongTongCulture RUclips channel. Both are great live versions. There's also a fantastic concert performance you can watch by searching for Dreamcatcher JUMF 2023 Official Stage and it will be on the Playlist ON RUclips channel. I'm not sure how copyright will be for the live performances so you if you view them you may want to obscure the video.
I hope you'll check out more of their work, they're fantastic people, and make great music. Enjoy!

Thank you Anna for reacting to Dreamcatcher, a wonderful seven member girl group who mix many genres of music entwined with dance choreography for a great K-pop/K-rock experience.
Boca is the second in the Dystopia trilogy, a take on cyber bullying and hate speech in a 'hear speak and see no evil' idiom (Scream, Boca (mouth) and Odd Eye). The lyrics are impactful, the music addicting, the singing ethereal, rapping industrial, dance engaging ( separate dance and live singing vids for most title tracks too)
They use the tree of language symbolizing the many roots and branches forming as one. They freely use mythologies worldwide to convey the message. An example is Gahyeon (pink hair) crying ichor- ambrosia/nectar 'blood' (fluid) of Greek gods. Lots of symbolism and lore in their music. Their previous work (7 ep and album) dealt in occult, dark angels and horror in even more rock setting.
Their latest (OOTD) 2 part endeavor deals with the façade of beauty expectations and unreal standards and again are on the dark side (Villains) with yet a somewhat mysterious storyline fighting over a crown. (Part 1 is out)
Again thank you Anna for reacting to Dreamcatcher. Everywhere we look can hold a celebration a story a laugh and a tear through music and happy to be part of your journey.

Siyeon (pronounced she-yawn) did the belt and vibrato, Yoohyeon did the run down, Siyeon with the second belt, both are fantastic and have different strengths. Dreamcatcher mixes beautiful vocals with rock/metal production and they're never afraid to interrupt heavy for a beautiful moment when it fits the theme of the song.
Deja Vu is a rock ballad that uses more of their vocals, Bon Voyage shows their amazing sudden contrast between soft and sweet or compressed and powerful (both those have the member that was missing from Boca and she's amazing too). They also have a lot of regular full ballads if you want a choice of that type of genre from them.

Dreamcatcher is an interesting group. Very mixed genre. They have a couple really heavy songs, like almost full on metal songs: 'No More' and 'Endless Night'. Most of their so called title tracks have a rock or metal edge, in one way or another, to varying degrees, but I'm going to recommend ‘Deja Vu’ for the vocals. Yes it has guitars as well, but most of the song is an epic ballad, I guess you can call it. Cool vid too.
    Also, Gahyeon 😍

For vocals the ballad Fireflies from their latest comeback, VersuS: Virtuous is great. Lots of harmonies (and lots of different groupings of those harmonies; personally I really enjoyed Dami + Gahyun, and Handong + Yoohyeon) and some magnificent ad libs by Siyeon.

I caught the last part of this premiere live and wanted to come over here to comment quickly about this. My daughter loved this type of music in her younger teen years. She has been introduced to many different types of music since then. Like I mentioned in a quick comment on the premiere, I took her to her first Maiden concert in 2022 and she is now a fan, like her Dad ;) Just like me, she'll always hold all genres in high regard and I'm sure she'll revisit these different types of genres throughout her life. It's what makes music special and it's what makes each of us unique.... I think. Have a great weekend!

01:50 Although there are only six of them here. One member of the group, Handong, was stuck in China due to the COVID pandemic for the release of this album and the previous one. Handong is Chinese and she took part in a Chinese talent show in 2019. Btw. Lisa from Blackpink was a trainer and judge on this show.
Boca is the second part of the Dystopia tilogy. This trilogy deals with media criticism. The following Apocalypse trilogy with environmental destruction and war. Dreamcatcher is known for having a larger international fan base than in Korea itself. This is also due to the strong rock/metal influences in their title tracks. In their Japanese releases these are even more pronounced. Dreamcatcher's B-Sides are even more versatile. There is hardly a genre that is not being experimented with.

Dreamcatcher's composition team (LEEZ and Ollounder) have been working with them since they debuted in 2017. They know the girl's voices intimately and they have always considered their voices as instruments that are blended with the actual instrument tracks to make the song. The members receive each new song in the form of a guide version which is sung by LEEZ. Then each member sings the entire song and on the basis of that they decide among themselves who gets each part. So each member knows the entire song not just their own part, which is what makes the transitions so seamless. Sadly, LEEZ left the company last year so now Ollounder is steering the ship and the change shows in their sound which is evolving in a slightly different direction. If you want to check that out then listen to OOTD or Shatter from their latest album.

Welcome to the Dreamworld! Dreamcatcher are very unique. They are the dark angels of Kpop and the only girl group who consistently incorporate Rock and Metal in their title tracks, fusing that with Kpop into something that basically is a new genre. They also are drenched in horror and social criticism, which again is special. Plus, they are massively talented, all of them. And while the girls look like they could rip out your spine when they are on stage, off stage they are adorable crackheads. 😉
Boca means "mouth" in Spanish and Portuguese and is part 2 of the Dystopia trilogy, which deals with bullying and hate comments, in particular the online variant ("A trick behind a mask, a ridiculous freak" from Scream). Boca has the lines "Why do you fill your precious time with hate" and "Too many angels dying now", which points to the effects those comments can have. Several Kpop idols have committed suicide in recent years, most likely because of cyber-bullying, but this is also about all the unnamed people who suffer from online bullies. A girlgroup tackling such a subject impresses the hell out of me. They literally go to war in this video and tell haters to go and shut their "Boca" in the lyrics. And the song is absolutely awesome! Who said you can't have three different musical genres in one song?

There is a story behind this song. First, it was Part 2 of the Dystopia Trilogy, and represents the Speak No Evil 🙊part. Moreover, this song (and Dystopia) was inspired, to say the least, by the passing of K-Pop idols Sulli, and her best friend Goo Hara, just a month apart. Both from suffering from mob cancelling and intense cyber bulling, in two different cases. The lyric line "too many angels dying now, I'm gonna change your mind, so I can breath again" is dedicated to them and many more Korean celebrities and people who suffered at the time. So Dreamcatcher declared war on the cyberbullies and told them to shut their Boca. In fact, Scream (Part 1-released 2 months after that story) and Boca (released 8 months later) were part of the strong backlash from the Korean society, that led to harsher sentences for cyber crimes. Finally, we learned that Dreamcatcher SuA is best friends with Seugyeon from CLC, who was in turn good friends with both Sulli and Goo Hara, and ended up adopting Sulli's cat. So this story hit close to home, for the Dreamcatcher girls.

Ditto🧙🏼‍♂️ I was aware of these facets of both KPop and recent Korean culture... The pressures on the artists and the specific Gender related harassment leading to mental health problems has been covered in the UK. We know it's not exclusive to Korea in all its aspects but it does seem to have reached an extreme. With extreme cyber spying and as you say bullying and blackmail.
The BBC world service teamed up with some respected Korean journalists and very brave victims and their friends and families to uncover the individuals and the wider industry and societal problems that has led to these tragic losses.
The commercial and cultural pressures are what causes me to not be taken in by the genre... but as a 🧙🏼‍♂️ 🇬🇧 I've seen it the patterns before .. and have almost lost count of the losses and turnover in young people who want to be musicians or performers. I think I was born old .. I keep listening but as I said earlier ...(I seem to have rubbed someone the wrong way for saying it 🙄 )
There's too often things in the K-pop genre that doesn't either catch my ear or reminds me of things that Just don't sit well knowing what's gone on before... I look forward to more organic groups and independent artists that fit their own ways of being. 😉🤫

@@annavaskelainen The main vocalist Siyeon made a cover of Speechless from the Aladdin movie that was so great that Disney Music commented on it. Later on Siyeon also made a cover of a song called Betelgeuse (in Japanese!) that was so good that it got her the opportunity to do a remake of the song Start Over from the Itaewon Class OST.
Dreamcatcher add new videos in their Special Clips playlist on their RUclips page with some regularity. Some of them are solo songs or dance videos rather than covers, but the ballpark are covers. I'd guess there's at least 50 covers, possibly more. A lot of them are from early on in their career; before they had a catalogue of their own songs it made a lot of sense to show off their skills by doing covers. Nowadays I think they mostly do them to make the fans happy.
BTW, their main rapper, Dami, is also a brilliant vocalist. Dami & Siyeon made a song called Shadow for the OST of a Korean drama called Dark Hole. It's absolutely hauntingly beautiful. I'm not expecting a reaction video, but do yourself a favour and give it a listen. Actually you might want to give it two listens, because there are two versions; the regular version and the slow version with a piano score backing it. I don't think you'll regret it.
WRT the lyrics of the song: the first song of the Dystopia trilogy (Scream) dropped just a few months after a famous idol committed suicide after a massive hate campaign against her, including threats and doxing. A month later her best friend also committed suicide after her ex released revenge p**n videos of her. Scream talks about how people don't care about the consequences of their actions when they are protected by anonymity. The music video illustrates it as a witch hunt. It also shows that some victims end up being bullies themselves.
Boca followed a few months later, as Dreamcatcher's battle cry against the bullies. "Too many angels dying now".
The trilogy wraps up with Odd Eye, where we're encouraged to open our eyes and see through the misinformation and the beautiful facade; behind it we'll see the filth. The Internet isn't the Utopia we hoped it would be, and it might be that this will never end.
The music videos are set in the past, in the present, and in the future. I'm guessing that they're trying to signify that this is nothing new and that if we don't get our shit together things will remain this bad in the future too.

No MV and no dancing so you can really see which face goes with which voice, and they are so adorable 🥰, so if you have time check this out!
If you want another MV to react to, Deja Vu is a very nice one, and stand alone. Or the other parts of a trilogy that Boca is the middle part of: Scream and Odd Eye.
If you react to their debut, Chase Me, you'll probably want to include the sequel Good Night in the same video. If you like spooky stories, you may get hooked and wanna do the entire Nightmare arc. I definitely wouldn't mind!
Then there is the Apocalypse trilogy, Maison, Vision and Bon Voyage.
They also have tons of "b-sides" that are more ballad-like. Some still have very well made MV's. Some have a self-made MV, hilarious. Try and keep a straight face while watching Sahara or Poison Love.

These girls train years singing and dancing before they even debut as idols, but the combination, singing while dancing must be pretty hard, right? I've heard many K-pop groups use backing tracks, so not 100% lip sync, but not 100% live either.
I can't tell if they do, but when they use a setup where they sit or stand, have handheld mics or a live band it must definitely be live.

@@teambellavsteamalice I've noticed both Dami & Siyeon showing off that yes, they're really singing live, by purposefully moving the microphone away from their mouths so you can hear the audio drop off. Most notably in their DanceEAR version of Justice, where Dami totally drops away her microphone, looks at the camera, and smirks (at "my vital rhythm"). That video is great evidence that they sing live; the sound of their stomping, the swishing of their clothes, etc.

Dreamcatcher does not do just one style of music. Their Title Tracks for all of their EPs and Albums are Rock and even Metal but most of their B-Side tracks are of many other genres. They literally have something for everybody and I promise, you can find something you will like no matter your preferred genre.
Their Japanese tracks are J-Metal and Pop-Metal and go way harder than their Korean stuff.
They also have a lullaby (which is actually called 'Lullaby', lol).
They also cover songs of other artists. Their deep-voiced Main Rapper, Dami, can also SING! She has covered Adele! And she covered the song 'Rockabye', which was originally done by Clean Bandit.
Between these seven amazing ladies, they can really do it all. :)

Love it when reactors go more in detail on the vocal aspects! While I know it isn't really a comeback from them I would love to see a reaction from a vocal coach like you to the medley cover of their main singer. It has a total of 4 songs (only part of them) of a Korean rock group called YB and seems to me to be more live (don't think it is completely live but I'm not very knowledgeable about that stuff). It is a longer video (~10 minutes) so that may be a reason to let it slip/safe it for another time but I would be really interested in your thoughts on it.

Think they kept the theatre balance similar to her epic belting in Zimermans Paul's theme from Dune.
There's a short more recent with better sound think it was sourced by Kizwa Vega ? Sorry if I've got that wrong .
If you want to hear and see her growth and range listen to the New year's eve duet with Brandon stone.. slightly more traditional but it's one her own revisited and it's extremely well done...with a vocal Easter egg 😉🧙🏼‍♂️🇬🇧

"It's all very polished and processed, probably a huge sugar rush for Gen Z teenagers, mostly female?"
This is a misjudgment, probably based on reporting in European media. Dreamcatcher concerts in particular have a very mixed audience of both gender and age.

    • @majinzane
      @majinzane 7 месяцев назад +4

Dreamcatcher tends to skew more towards women and men of all ages due their music being based on a core rock sound and the lyrical content of their songs. Dreamcatcher concerts tend to have people who are teenagers, old metal heads, and just about everything in between in almost equal proportions.
Boca is probably their most "K-Pop" sounding title next to their other song BEcause but they have several songs in their discography that are straight rock or metal along with dozens of other genres like R&B, EDM, Jazz, Reggae, Funk, ballads, and much more.
This comment also completely ignores the lyrical content of the song, which if you don't care about music that calls out issues with our society that's fine, I guess.

    • @teambellavsteamalice
      @teambellavsteamalice 7 месяцев назад +4

I did need to get used to rap elements in K-pop, but otherwise the mix of genre's is its great appeal. j
K-pop is very diverse, but a lot can be too bubblegum or too much hip-hop for one's taste.
But some is even jazzy, like Pianoman and Decalcomany (Mamamoo) or Jazz Bar or For (Dreamcatcher).
So don't assume it's all similar, try many different things!
Btw I don't like salted popcorn, but (sweet) popcorn with M&M's is a great combo imo!

Not media influenced Id have to follow the media and I don't, I like a very wide range of music .. but manufactured bands and music tends to leave me 🤷🏻‍♂️ k pops just the latest incarnation ... that's not to say they are not highly capable artists. It's just I would prefer to hear and watch a Playing for change performance than something quite so manufactured.
I grew up with the music of the sixties and even earlier blues and jazz..Ive lived among the Giant founding heavy rock bands and folk rock, punk music, Classical, and New romantics,Goths and Reggae, David Bowie, Two tone, World Music WOMAD and countless other unique artists bands and collectives of artists. Sooner or later I dare say something from the K pop spectrum may catch my ear but I'm more likely to listen to Tom Waits for lyrics or Eivor or an artist like Pura fe, DakaBraka .... or Tiarwen a bunch of Tuareg blues musicians.
I've never been into the whole choreographed musical production or boy /girl band thing beyond the early Motown 60/70s maybe, so there's more than enough choice for everyone out there. Go enjoy it if it's what "makes you want to take off your skin and dance around in your bones"...Tom W. 😎🌌 I don't like big crowds so I'm more likely to be sat in a club or a bar or at a Smaller open air festival listening to a bunch of artists all doing wildly different music and playing their own instruments live..
You also will probably come to find your own wandering way... I guarantee it won't stay with KPop..and manufactured bands.. Meantime have fun and don't follow fashions🧙🏼‍♂️🇬🇧 Wander around a lot avoid the crowd and get a feel of what else feels good ... and what's different find your own path away from the marketing men.
