What a wonderful build! Used to play cribbage for hours on end but can find anyone that knows how to play anymore. Now I may have to build a board. We are looking forward to watching more of your videos!

Poor Man's DIY thank you so much. It’s such a fun game, you should make boards for your friends and teach them to play 😊

I use a Rockler template also. I've done a number of 3-track cribbage boards in 1x6 pine. (i'm cheap) Also I find if you "pump" (push in and back) the self centering drill adapter at least twice into each hole it helps clear the drill bit of the packed wood dust. Be sure the self centering drill adapter spring is fully extended before going to the next hole in the template.
I usually drill a group of 10-15 holes at a time, check the drill tip temperature, pull back the adapter to expose the twist drill, clear wood dust build up with an old toothbrush and let the drill cool down before continuing.
For your excess holes: Cut some 1/8" dowels to glue into the extra holes at the end. Trim flush, sand and/or plane. Use a walnut color touch up pen to blend in the dowel ends, then apply the poly finish coats. You can still see that a mistake happened but it will avoid confusion during game play.

The Rockler template for 3 players now includes a rounded end plate allowing you to make an S-type track. I bought both 2-player and 3-player but I like the 3-player look of the board.
I too found drilling holes gets the bit warm like Ralph comments below. I wore a glove to rack the drill adapter back and forth to clear it as I went along.
Walnut seemed to drill easier than Hickory in my experience. YMMV.
The included spring-loaded drill adapter can hold a different bit but check length of the bit to ensure your replacement bit goes deep enough.
I have found people looked for card games during COVID lockdowns but not so much now in 2024. Making a live-edge cribbage board allowed me to play again with my 93-year old father. Too bad my 37 year-old son never picked up the game. Maybe his future daughter can learn to play from her Grandfather?

I used same jig. Had to use wD40 on it because of heat and sticking.
    Your board looks nice.

Thanks for the video. I love the way people have such fantastic workshops and all the great equipment. And also how you have "scraps" of maple, walnut, mahogany etc lying around. I'll have to make do with a lump of pine I retrieved from a pallet I had some tiles delivered on. Poor man's cribbage board. Thanks again.

🤣 This is the best comment ever! I remember thinking the same thing not so long ago. The truth is, once you start buying expensive wood for a project you save every teeny tiny piece because you cashed in your 401K to buy it 😆. Also a lot of times you can find some scraps at local lumber mills for free or at a discounted price.

good video. I ran into the same problem with tearout when drilling the holes and will use your tipe of re-planing after drilling,.
To avoid having to re-drill all the holes, I adjusted the lenght of drill bit in the self-centering drill bit so that the holes are a little deeper (I made the bir flush with the tip of the self-centering drill bit)
I can now plane off 1/32" or so and the pegs will still fit.

I found two vintage wood cribbage boats for $2.50 at my local thrift store! I was searching for cribbage game instructions and happened upon your very well done video. Would you consider making a chess board video? Thanks for this. The metal pegs are a nice contrast to the gorgeous choice of wood.

To keep boards from moving around when sanding, place a piece of grippy shelf liner under it.

Cover the face of the board with clear packing tape or painters tape, it stops tear out…

Good night . Is this paper that you use underneath to not stick the glue is parchment paper, tracing paper?

    • @AroundtheHouse
      @AroundtheHouse  4 года назад +1

I like to use parchment paper just the stuff you buy from Costco for baking. It is really cheap and works great to keep the glue from getting everywhere.

so if you didnt have a planer and joiner, how would you go about making this board safely?

Hi Tim! Thanks for the comment. I would use a hand plane. They take a bit to master but you can get great results. Good luck! Let me know how it goes!
