It’s been 10 years since I’ve touched a yo-yo, I’m now 24 years old and can’t wait to go at it again! Just ordered mine online yesterday. Thanks for the tips!
I got a yoyo a while ago and learned a few tricks, I left it at my house while visiting my grandma 4 hours away and my dad mailed it to me a couple months later (yes I'm still here waiting to go home) and you refreshed my brain thank you so much.
@@MarkHayward haha... I"m glad I bought some cheaper yoyos for extras... my YYJ Trigger ($9 sale) hit the ground at 30 mph (string flew off finger) and broke,. so I took off the massive steel weight rings and, with a wrap of aluminum-clad tape, they dropped snugly in the spot meant for a cap in a Duncan Pro Z (assembled with the wideing spacers which usually stink on that model without enough rim weight to offset the spacers). I love the big, heavy, slow, stable yoyo so much for slower-speed training I'm going to make another (and maybe machine rings later to go into the Triggers robbed of their rings... the machined POM/Celcon YYJ Trigger deserves more balanced rings than the stamped/punched rings it came with). Anyway this week's worst accident was hitting the end of my forefinger twice in a row at high speed with a rock-hard looper on the heavy side. Bad part is, I cut the end of that finger off like 6 months ago. Even the nail grew back (weird) but the bone is obviously still sharp on the end inside the meat because I about passed out the second time. Well when they animals in the circus it trains them to get the trick right. I love animals so I'll do it to myself.
I did all of these tricks when I was about 10-11. I miss those days. My brother bought a Yoyo today for me (I’m 23 now) because it reminded him of me and now I’m watching this to remember the tricks well! Thanks for this! 🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🎈🎈🎈🎈🎈
Awesome video Mark! I'm curious how many old guys like me start learning later in life. I just had an argument with my wife! Why, you might wonder? Because I'm 44 years old and never learned how to yo-yo (besides going up and down when I was a kid). I've just ordered my first yo-yo, Magicyoyo V3. I liked the fact that it's responsive to start learning and it comes with other bearings to upgrade to non-responsive. Your video will definitely be used every day. Only suggestion, if you're promoting your website or yo-yo sales, throw the links in the description or a pinned comment. Many thanks for your help 👍🏼

i like how you still reply to comments when this video is a year old. im trying to pick up the yoyo as a hobby and this has proven to be helpful so far. thanks!
I started off with a yo-yo that doesn’t have a spinning centre so I learned for the last couple years on my own in a odd way, it was actually through this video that I learned that they were supposed to spin! yo-yo, and it feels completely different! So now I’m learning how to do it properly, and it’s pretty fun! Especially seeing the differences in how I used to do it versus now. I still have quite a ways to go but I’m getting better each minute I practice.
Cool tricks! My kid just got a yoyo and it took me back to my yoyoing days 😝 Was looking for some tricks to learn with my son and keep him (and myself) away from electronics for a little while. So glad I could help! Welcome back. I love video games as much as the next guy, but there are other fun skills too! Of course you're as cool... you're a yo-yoer!
The gray yo-yo that I use in the show-off section is the Duncan Mayhem (Duncan Crew Edition). It's totally different from the other yo-yos. It's machined aluminum with a special low-friction surface, it has a ball-bearing axle, and is unresponsive. It's an excellent yo-yo but is not for beginners. My recommendation for the best beginner yo-yo is the Yo-yo Factory Velocity. It's fully adjustable from beginner (responsive) play, up to advanced (unresponsive) play. I also really like the Duncan Barracuda.
In my experience the yo-yo master always answers, and with enthusiasm. That's part of what makes the yo-yo community so great. Also, I can't make you a yo-yo man, I can only help you see the path. You have to walk it yourself.

@@MarkHaywardJust realised I did the forward pass wrong, I didn't turn my palm up, I kept it perpendicular to the ground. Now I can do it the right way, but I can't guess how to do the sleeper, how do I know if my YoYo can do it physically?
@@MarkHaywardokay so I checked my YoYo, and the end of the string is fixed INSIDE the axle (or rather, the end of the string is stuck between the axle and the side of the yo-yo so I can't move it). Very nice and easy tutorial. Im currently just doing gravity pulls because my yoyo string is broken and VERY short. Thanks dude! Oh and can you reccomend me any yoyos from amazon?👌👁👅👁👌
Amazing. I googled your video one tube. It brought back so many memories. Half of them I use to know but forgot them through the years. I was showing my son a trick cause he got a new yo-yo and hasn’t really used it yet. He was amazed cause daddy knew how to do a yo-yo trick. He’s 9. Thanks again.
If I never watched this video, I probably wouldn't be as good as I am now if i hadn't watched this video 5 years ago. You were my teacher in yoyoing. Not only that, your intermediate tricks video was the first video i watched when i got my first unresponsive yoyo.
Hello I have a quick question. I have had a lot of yo-yo experience about 2 years ago but since it broke I have stopped. I wouldn’t call my self no expert. I am familiar with all of these tricks. I need help with buying a good quality yo-yo that won’t break on me and that will spin long. Any recommendations? Nothing over 150$
My recommendation for the best beginner yo-yo is the Yo-yo Factory Velocity. It's fully adjustable from beginner (responsive) play, up to advanced (unresponsive) play. You can buy it from me at www.markhayward.net or from your favorite yo-yo seller.
I got a yoyo yesterday (figured it's a cool hobby to pick up in quarantine), and I'm stuck at the outside loop :') luckily I have a lot of time to practice :) such a great video :)
1) make sure it's not obviously not broken 2) check to see if it's in working order: if you have a bearing or transaxle, will it spin? Is it rusty? Is there junk stuck in it? If you have a fixed axe: it the string installed correctly? What I meant by that comment in the video is just make sure your yo-yo is in proper working order.
Thats the video I was searching for, so thanks for it! Haha, I was trying to do the Breakaway and accidently done the around the world When Im trying the trapez, the YoYo wont keep spinning on the line (same for tricks like Elevator). It stops spinning and gets tangled. What am I doing wrong? Im using a ball bearing YoYo
Great! Breakaway by itself isn't super fun, it's really training for Around the World, so you're doing great. As for Trapeze and Elevator, it sounds like you're breaking the plane of the string. When doing any tricks where the yo-yo sits on the string you have to be really careful to keep it all in the same plane. If you aren't on a flat plane the string will rub on the inner wall of the yo-yo, which both slows it down, but also makes the yo-yo tilt, eventually leading to it flopping, twisting, and tangling. So really focus on keeping the tricks all in one flat plane... like you're a mime yo-yoing on the inside of a glass box :)
I am a 37 year old woman who never knew there were world championships in yoyoing. Also, never knew that you could do tricks. My childhood feels fake now. I still only can go up and down.
There might be something else you didn't know. If that tomcat in that avatar you have is an actual cat that you have around, did you know that he wants to hunt and kill snakes? Like you, most people are ignorant in that regard.
@@stratoleft that cat was not a tomcat and she died in 2010. Besides, I live in the Netherlands and we have no snakes. At least, not where I live. But she used to hunt birds and mice. Which was sweet. My dearest Moois.
Unfortunately I don't. It was a long time ago (1995), and people didn't film everything back then. I don't think it would be very interesting to watch anyway 😄
I can do everything on here pretty easily for my first time yo-ing but i cant seem to do the outside or the inside loop after doing a forward pass, tips?
If you are using a flared-shape yo-yo those two tricks will be pretty hard. I actually debated about whether I should even include them in the video since most people now start out with yo-yos that are that shape. If that's the case for you, don't spend too much time on them, just wait until you get your hands on a narrower yo-yo like the Spintastics Technic, the Duncan ProYo, or something really old-school like a Hummingbird. If a wide yo-yo isn't your problem, try experimenting with the timing of when you push the yo-yo back out. You might be doing it too early, or too late. Otherwise, you might just need practice.
Well. Nice tutorials. I just had nothing to do and watch this. I am advanced player. I am planning to buy a 1a pocket size yoyo that's not from yoyofactory. Any recommendations? Thank you.
Thanks so much for this! I recently got a new yoyo for my birthday and have wanted to learn tricks, it came with a book but that was very hard to follow as you could only look through pictures. I learnt the power throw from this, and that was my favourite/most fun thing to do, but now it's definately the sleeper or the breakaway. I like doing a variation of the breakaway where you don't let the string go all the way to your left shoulder, and sort of let the yoyo swing back and forth a few times on a kind of sleeper and then catch it.
That sounds fun! I'm glad my video was helpful. I'm with you on the difficulty of learning yo-yo tricks from a book. That was how I learned a lot of my first tricks, and it's tough... especially with the picture tricks!
**yoyoing isn't hard. You just need to know the right thing to do** Well my guy "piloting a plane isn't hard. You just need to know the right thing to do"
I couldn't agree more! Almost anything is attainable if you work at it. Just take it one step at a time, and learn from people who know more than you do.
It's because I pay attention and try to help people as much as I can. Welcome. May you learn many, many sick tricks. I'm working on a new intermediate video that will have even more, so stay tuned.

That's so great! How fun to show your skills to the next generation!
Yo-yos are always amusing
This is epic man, thanks I won my yo-yo at an arcade and I was just in complete confusion
I bought a new yoyo today and i can now do the walk the dog . Thanks !
Fantastic!
thank you yo-yo master
My pleasure!
Thanks a lot, just bought a yoyo🥳
Malaika? My crush's name is Malaika XD
If I never watched this video, I probably wouldn't be as good as I am now if i hadn't watched this video 5 years ago. You were my teacher in yoyoing. Not only that, your intermediate tricks video was the first video i watched when i got my first unresponsive yoyo.
That's so great! Thanks for letting me know, I'm so glad 😊
@@MarkHayward No problem champ!
Self quarantine vibes lmaoo
Mark Hayward: I have very good yoyo skills!
Smoky Quartz: That's cute...
Smokey Quarts: Are you sure about that
Good for you!
Nice, I’ve tried all the inside loop thirty times! I finally got the hang of it!
Nothing over 150$
go to yoyotricks.com there is a wide selection and one of the cheaper ones I've seen is only $10
My recommendation for the best beginner yo-yo is the Yo-yo Factory Velocity. It's fully adjustable from beginner (responsive) play, up to advanced (unresponsive) play. You can buy it from me at www.markhayward.net or from your favorite yo-yo seller.
it has been 2 years and he is still hearting
Yup. I'm in it to win it.
I got a yoyo yesterday (figured it's a cool hobby to pick up in quarantine), and I'm stuck at the outside loop :') luckily I have a lot of time to practice :) such a great video :)
Thank you! Keep practicing, you'll get it.

Me: he wasnt showing off the entire time!??!?!
How do u check to see if your yoyo can do a sleeper
1) make sure it's not obviously not broken 2) check to see if it's in working order: if you have a bearing or transaxle, will it spin? Is it rusty? Is there junk stuck in it? If you have a fixed axe: it the string installed correctly? What I meant by that comment in the video is just make sure your yo-yo is in proper working order.
I have gotten so good i can rock the baby, sleep, and breakaway!
This is the best tutorial on youtube!
Aww thanks! It makes me so happy to hear you say that! Tell all your friends!
Thats the video I was searching for, so thanks for it!
Haha, I was trying to do the Breakaway and accidently done the around the world
When Im trying the trapez, the YoYo wont keep spinning on the line (same for tricks like Elevator).
@@MarkHayward Alright, I will try. Thanks again
Now you know, and there is still time for you! Welcome to the bright world of yo-yoing!
after 1 and a half years hes still hearting comments, pure legend
It's been longer than that!
@@MarkHayward ah! i use your video for practicing your tricks! you were the first trick video i watched! im on the breakaway
@@moonie5745 Excellent! Glad to hear it 🙂
Hey mark do you have any video of your world championship
Unfortunately I don't. It was a long time ago (1995), and people didn't film everything back then. I don't think it would be very interesting to watch anyway 😄
@@MarkHayward ohhh
I can do everything on here pretty easily for my first time yo-ing but i cant seem to do the outside or the inside loop after doing a forward pass, tips?
Aidan Boydston practice lol
If you are using a flared-shape yo-yo those two tricks will be pretty hard. I actually debated about whether I should even include them in the video since most people now start out with yo-yos that are that shape. If that's the case for you, don't spend too much time on them, just wait until you get your hands on a narrower yo-yo like the Spintastics Technic, the Duncan ProYo, or something really old-school like a Hummingbird. If a wide yo-yo isn't your problem, try experimenting with the timing of when you push the yo-yo back out. You might be doing it too early, or too late. Otherwise, you might just need practice.
THIS GUY RULES! So easy to learn and do it with him! Fun!
Aww thanks! YOU rule!
That’s really helpful sir
Well. Nice tutorials. I just had nothing to do and watch this. I am advanced player. I am planning to buy a 1a pocket size yoyo that's not from yoyofactory. Any recommendations? Thank you.
The Barracuda is amazing. You might also try the Yeti.
You just need to know the right thing to do**
Well my guy "piloting a plane isn't hard. You just need to know the right thing to do"
I couldn't agree more! Almost anything is attainable if you work at it. Just take it one step at a time, and learn from people who know more than you do.
Mark my yoyo will stop in about 1 second when i land it on a string, iam using a whip from yoyo factory can u tell me whats wrong?
1 second is really fast for any yo-yo to stop spinning. Do you have a tangle in the string? Is the bearing shot? Are you throwing it hard enough?
@@MarkHayward well im not really aware of my yoyos condition and it doesnt feel the same it might be the barring or my string
I bought a yo-yo and this is my new hobby.great job keep it up!!
Great! Thank you! I'll have a new video out in a few days, so keep an eye out!
