    thanks scott! It's refreshing to hear that about tucking the elbow. Many talented FH players have told me that I don't get my elbow in tight enough when the disc passes the body. what about a submarine pitcher? The motion they make tend to seem similar to a frisbee sidearm

    • @ScottStokelyDG
      @ScottStokelyDG  4 года назад +1

      Great question. This comes up at my lessons at times...
      Submarine pitchers can be amazing but they did not throw at the velocity of those throwing with a three quarter delivery.
      Also, most of us have grown up throwing objects like a ball and not with a submarine motion. Throwing a three quarter delivery is what we’ve always done and for most players be more natural.
      Also, I found this in an article about submarine pitchers ... “If you look at many of the submariners, there really isn’t a lot of difference in their mechanics from a regular pitcher other than the extreme shoulder tilt. The arm still operates in a similar fashion, and the same mechanics still apply to the shoulder and elbow. The arm circle should still be applied and you will see a similar layback of the forearm into maximum external rotation.” What they are basically saying is what I say in that arm mechanics remain similar to three quarter throws but with a shoulder tilt. I call it leaning but we are saying the same thing :-)

    I’m mostly a sidearm only player. Lately I’ve been working on putting sidearm. I’ve made some lengthy shots,
    any reason I shouldn’t be putting using sidearm??
    10-20 ft I typically throw backhand in the past. I’ve been considering only side arm all the time, and see how it goes.

    • @ScottStokelyDG
      @ScottStokelyDG  2 года назад +1

      There is a consensus on proper putting form. The basic mechanics for consistency make the best methods rise to the top. That is why alternate forms like that are not viable as a baseline putting form.

      It’s good to notice though that if you execute sidearm correctly (even Scott’s technique), your elbow will end up going quite close to your body in the middle of the swing, but it’s just a consequence of throwing with the correct technique, leading with the elbow as Scott Stokely explains in one of his other videos. So, you shouldn’t avoid your elbow getting close to your body in the middle of the swing, it just shouldn’t be the focus.

    It was interesting to watch this and Eagle's forehand breakdown. Very different "run-up" and arm position/angle.
    Shows that you can do things in many ways with a great result. Eagle has so flexible joints that his style doesn't suit everyone. I think this is more "universal" and tips that works for everyone.
    Scott is a legend and one of the all time best forehand throwers and knows this stuff. Just interesting to see that other approaches and forms as well with impressive results.
    Scott's advises suits my body better.

    • @caseysmith544
      @caseysmith544 4 года назад

      Yep, Eagle also does a bunch of Yoga to keep being able to throw this way.
      My dad does nearly what Scott does but has the arm in such an angle that the elbow can be forward on the throw. He is powerful enough to use his 172 Star T-Rex/Xcalibur as modern equivalent from Innova for his forehand or could, yet can use a 148 DX Archangel he has on it forehand too.

    Hey Scott! I musk ask, i have been told by watching other vids that you dont activly move the wrist forward at the end. The wrist snap comes from the elbow/forearm lagging behind and when it stops the wrist goes. I dont get any good spinn doing that, guess its not 100% correct right? Should snap it forward right before the disc goes by extra push from my fingers? Ialso wonders how important is the swingback timing compare to a bh throw like when plant foot touch you should be at your reachback peak. / Thanks

    Great information, however, you do need to keep your elbow down in the power pocket of your side. The term "keep your elbow to your side" has been exaggerated to the point people have lost its true meaning. Keeping your elbow to your side doesn't mean keep it there like a tee-rex. That's ridiculous. Keeping your elbow to your side means don't flail out your elbow in a wide arch. You'll dislocate your shoulder.

    In my late 30s now, never was a great player, but from about 2005-2015 I would often park a 420 foot hole, no wind with a side arm. I had this fantasy to get super juiced and break the sidearm distance record but I never got to it . 1: It's all about a violent hip turn with proper timing. (Similar to an open stance forehand in tennis) 2: Imagine you have to sideways chop a midget in the head as hard as you can. That's the proper way to follow through (which is not much of a follow through at all). It's not a throw like Scott says. 3: Blizzard Boss with wind/ neutral wind, Star Boss into the wind . My best throws with the wind are hyzer flips that go 20-30 feet high. Into the wind, they were lazer beams that don't go higher then 10 feet.

    the first video I ever watched about disc golf was you Scott, many years ago, your sense of humor and goofiness was infectious along with your mechanical instructions, which were and are presented in a solid common sense and clear way born from a gifted athlete and teacher. Putting, backhand and now this is the best forearm explanation I could hope for. Don't let the non-creative haters bum you out, keep up the goofiness, silliness and pranks. If I wanted decorum and conservatism, I'd go back to stifling, lockstepping, 100% right wing conservative, white bread ball golf. Your self deprecating absurd spirit is inspirational to me, I started making disc golf music videos, never had so much fun. Keep walking your path and keep annoying the "I'm so cool" Paul McStiffass crowd.

      Maybe those who know that throwing a forehand/flick with a frisbee (yes, not a disc) inside out (so the furthest side facing downwards) can be done from effortlessly to a lot of power and thrown far.
      It might be an area where Ultimate Frisbee (UF)/throws don't quite work out in Disc Golf (DG).
      In UF, if you threw the frisbee Outside-In like in the video, it most likely won't go far compared to the IO.
      Back to the haters, they possibly threw forehands facing the side or wanted to see him throw.

    Scott, as with many of the other comments, I too am learning side arm, and I was totally throwing both side ways, AND "like a frisbee", like a sub marine pitcher! Thanks very much! One question, I see you put your index finger first, and over lap with your middle finger. You see a lot of the top players on tour opposite of that, the middle finger on the rim. As a beginner, does that matter, or is it all preference and what works for each player?
