I found out when I was looking at old church records in the Midwest that back in the 1800s and early 1900s there are baptism records that sometimes show the bio father's name. Maybe the ministers felt it was best to not try to deceive the Lord.

Both Dakotas share a border with Minnesota so if Dean was from northeast S. Dakota and Bertha was from southwest Minnesota then they easily lived just a few miles apart. There’s so many small towns in that area that they all meet at different places es. They may meet at the Mills where everyone brings their crops and pay to have say the wheat chaffed or to sell their product. It’s odd that Berthas parents stopped the wedding because these were the days of shotgun marriage where the man would be made to ‘make an honest woman’ of Bertha. Wow you guys are getting a bunch of 90 year olds lately! I can’t imagine carrying this around with me for 90 years! I’m sure glad she got the Answer for her birthday!
