  • This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Dr. Robinson, the former superintendent of Newtowns public schools tells the story of the Sandy Hook school shooting with profound insight and eloquence.
Dr. Robinson has a Ph.d in Educational leadership from Connecticut University. She has worked as a superintendent for many years. For five and a half years she was the superintendent of the Newtown school district. She was in this position on the day of the Sandy Hook elementary shooting. Soon after the incident she took a position in Stratford and is now the Superintendent of their public schools.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

I lived in a neighboring town when this happened. New Milford, Connecticut. All schools in the area were under lockdown. I never did understand what happened until I was maybe 13. I learned that my mother's science teacher lost her child. Her child was named Olivia. About ten years later, I now think about it and I fear the rest of my schooling. I am a senior now. I cry every December 14th knowing what happened to children that were my age. The fear is still real ten years later. This is still something we have to worry about now.

@@Sputterbugz I don't find it obvious that guns are the problem. People have been killing each other on mass since long before the invention of gun powder and, in fact, some of the deadliest massacres in recent history have been without a single shot fired (like the Bastille day massacre).
It's time for people to stop blaming an inanimate object for something that's clearly the fault of a mental health epidemic we're not adressing.
It appears to me and so many other's that this narrative of “guns are the problem” stems from the fact that firearms are one of the very few tools a free society can utilize to stand up to tyrany, and I say that coming from a country with draconian gun laws and a tyranical state, so yeah, I'm aware that it's a political agenda being pushed because they used the same tactic here 40 years ago.

@@constitutionaldennis it definitely is because of the gun control agenda. She mentioned the AR-15 by name every time she could, as if it's some brand new killing machine and not a 50+ year old design. I'm from Connecticut, the gun laws they passed immediately after classified anything that was semi auto, pistol grip, and detachable magazine as an "assault weapon", plus you need a permit just to buy ammo. But of course everything already owned was grandfathered in, so it was just a feel-good law to pretend they did something. You used to be able to mail order a full auto Thompson shipped right to your door, and in that age there wasn't a surge of school shootings. You're absolutely right it's a mental health problem disguised as a gun control problem, because we currently have the strictest gun laws in American history and school shootings still happen.

I mean it's not hard to pull the trigger 20 to 30 times pretty fast into a group of targets and hit them all. This whole argument of AR vs not an AR is pointless in a situation where only one person has a gun. Only in gun battle does the specific weapon really matter much. Unless you're walking into an enclosed space with a bolt action rifle or a weapon you have to manually chamber, the gun is winning 99 percent of the time so does it really matter much?
