In 1964, my 7th grade English teacher, Mr. Jack Coty taught this poem to our class. It so moved me that I memorized it back then and even now. more than 55 years later, I can still recite it and its meaning has grown far deeper at this point in my life.
Dear Robert, I have over almost a lifetime, committed to memory almost every poem you have created, except those story poems, far too long to remember. I also taught my grandchildren your poems to recite to their parents, demonstrating to them how clever their children were! My firstborn granddaughter Emily, never forgot Stopping by Woods, and taught her three sons that poem as soon as they could memorize.! My 12 grandchildren, with their little heads stuffed with Robert Frost. They have done me proud.
Found this today and was moved to tears. I'm not usually keen on hearing poets recite their own poetry as some seem to use a " poetry reciting " voice a bit like when my Mum read out the deaths in the newspaper but Robert Frost is just incredible here. He is chatty and kind like his poems but the strength is like a punch in the solar plexus. I never thought , having known his poetry since the early sixties, that I would see and hear him speaking it.
He wrote this when he was depressed and kind of contemplating suicide one night and this poem were his thoughts and he didn't write it down till later it was him coming full circle in his mind in these words and finally the end of the poem obviously shows that he decided against offing himself. I am sure that this is not anything that people who love Robert Frost don't already know but just in case I wanted to share. It really isn't a whimsical little poem about a winner night lol
And this poem was taped to my wall on a piece of paper in my room when I was a teenager and after my first suicide attempt and the beginning of my battle with depression and mental illness and to this day at 41 years old anytime I get thoughts or go through my darkest times I still read this as a reminder from Mr. Frost about why I have to stick around.
@@alexanderpatrick4866 I always saw it as a bit of fatigue on the speakers part. Like he's not looking forward to how far he has to go before he sleeps. (And this sleep could either be actual sleep or the big 'sleep', the end of his life)

I have never been one for poetry, mainly because I couldn't recite a poem by memory. As time moved on, I realized the use of poetry was indeed more value than riches. I have never been able to name any poet's name, however, of late I have found it soothing to the soul and mind. Now I find poetry a source of comfort especially complex poetry that pull at the heart strings and bring tears to your eyes. Thank you to the poets who bring peace to a broken heart, at least even for a few hours.
reading poetry all my life and the last stanza of this poem, what he wrote in maybe 5 minutes, is the most beautiful and haunting and tangible and efficacious and poignant and simple and perfect stanza ever as graced a page.
@@tombo1140 haha, oh yeah, I'd welcome anyone sharing pearls of poetry or wisdom, any day. Pretty cool of him.I could share plenty with you myself actually, lol - have a good one mate
I love this poem, probably more especially because I have been on the farmer’s side in plain fact and the woodchucks side figuratively. Having in fact sent a shotgun blasts at woodchucks and frequently connecting. They cause a great deal of damage to my property, however they are trying to live as they must.
It’s snowing here. It never snows here. The woods directly next to our home we’re just cut down a week or so ago, for property development… I always used to walk through those woods, reciting Frosts “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening”, every time it snowed… the first time I fully analyzed, and memorized that poem, I walked through those woods… Soon, I worry there will be no trees left for poems like these… “I have miles to go, before I sleep, miles to go, before I sleep…
What a shame that Robert Frost is not the norm in today's society. Overcome with vile music ' if it is lawful to call it such' the gift of a perfect turned phrase, full of meaning but short in pomposity. After reading the comments, my hope is renewed, all is not lost. Fine and thoughtful people are still here. I must look harder. God bless you all, you give me hooe.
STOPPING BY WOODS ON A SNOWY EVENING Whose woods these are I think I know. His house is in the village though; He will not see me stopping here To watch his woods fill up with snow. My little horse must think it queer To stop without a farmhouse near Between the woods and frozen lake The darkest evening of the year. He gives harness bells a shake To ask if there is some mistake. The only other sound's the sweep Of easy wind and downy flake. The woods are lovely, dark and deep, But I have promises to keep, And miles to go before I sleep, And miles to go before I sleep.
Can i say i dont like how the great poet read his own poem...the poem always had an alost auditory music to it even just reading it. When you hear him reciting it to me anyway it seems prosaic. Maybe he is tired of that one, his most famous poem.
Frost would have been a Trump-tard. He was a founder of the college I went to in the '70s, which had a Town Meeting governance written into the founding documents, continuing to August of this year, but alas, no more.

Really it's correct.
Nah, we are more lucky that Robert recited as he asked without hesitating.
Yeah
Exactly.
This video is the first time I heard his voice. I love this poem.
Out of no where, I thought about this poem tonight. Never thought I'd find Robert Frost himself reciting it.
Exactly the same story myself! Small world....

Some guy I delivered food to today quoted this and told me to look it up when I got home.
Why did he recite it to you
