I'm really missing Seiffen and Dresden. The Erzgebirge is called even Christmas land in my home region. The whole region is fantastic when you just drive through it in December. I come from the Erzgebirge, it'sreally missing here!

In 2009 my boyfriend and I drove all the way to Cologne from Holland just to experience (unexpectedly) quite heavy snow storms so they closed the Christmas markets in the 2 days we were in Cologne. We returned to Holland pissed. 🤣

Prague during any time of the year is beautiful but wow, during the holidays it's even more magical! 😍 ✨ I was there for 4 days in the summer a few years ago and it is simply not enough time to explore and appreciate everything this wonderful city has to offer!
Just want to add a plus for Italian Christmas markets - they go on until 6th of January! Had a nice visit to Como a few years ago. Small, but light shows, ice rink, stalls are open til the 6th, when La Befana absailed down the cathedral. This year we are visiting Bolzano in the Dolomiti.
Stockholm was depressing when I visited last year for new years eve. The city was empty like a ghost town and you could not find a restaurant/bar which did not close before 11:00 pm. I had to celebrate the new year in the hotel.

WOW, I totally disagree with #1 being that you've missed Rothenburg ob Der Tauber, Germany! It is the Christmas Market destination with the birth of Schneeballen and the flagship Christmas store of Käthe Wolfhart. Other Christmas Destinations to rival Köln are Rudesheim and Nurnberg. Bruges was actually too crowded for me when I was there last Christmas but the market does go into the new year. You basically can go to any city in Europe and get a great Christmas experience though.
I really missed not traveling to Bruge,ghent or Eindhoven this nov or dec .The Christmas athmosphere was so great !PG.We will be able to travel next year I have decorations i bought in Bruge ,their so unique.We have Christmas markets in Ireland but nothing like main land Europe.Its the cobble streets and old buildings that add to the fairy tale look

Ireland is indeed lovely in summer. A few years ago I visited Dublin and other places and I enjoyed it! Yes, Austria has a beautiful landscape too. Ireland has the sea and cliffs, which we don't have in Austria. Merry Christmas! 🎄🌟⛄
For those who said an American city should be on the list, should take in consideration that American Christmas is like a spectator sport where you stand aside while watching the spectacle such as tree lighting ( Rockefeller Center, NY and the National Tree Washington DC comes to mind), skating ring, Macy's window shopping/browsing and santacon. On the other hand, Europe has Christmas procession through the street, Christmas markets and biblical theme events inside these churches.

I have been here year 2014 Tallinn: Sadly nope, I have never been there.. Prague: Definitely one of my favorite, I have been here year 2017 and I really want to go back again Bath: Nope I have never visited bath although I have been in UK twice Wroclaw: I have been there only for a day because I was on a tour around Poland back then Vienna: YeSS!! This was really the one in this list that I have visited during Christmas season, it was December year 2016 Rovaniemi: Nope I have never been there... Bruges: Check! year 2016 also Strasbourg: I have been here year 2012 and I haven't been back there since Cologne: YeSS!! I also visited Cologne during Christmas of the year 2017
I would definitely recommend visiting Bath if you ever make it back to England; the entire city has been designate a UNESCO World Heritage Site (thanks to its architectural beauty). It is also very close by to many other historic cities like: Oxford, Salisbury and Wells, plus the gorgeous Cotswolds (a region in England that contains hundreds of beautiful stone villages and towns), and other UNESCO sites like Stonehenge and Blenheim Palace.

Agree. I was so incredibly fortunate to visit the Christmas market at Parliament in Vienna! Belvedere had its own market and yes that was not the Belvedere Palace. Schrunbrunn palace was the icing on the cake for me! Unexpectedly I saw a Mozart concert there my last night there! Amazing! Isn't Parliament the largest..in the world? Its the largest somewhere, that i know. Don't miss this one!

Cologne isnt the best german Xmasmarket by far its one of the worse ones even. The most famous are Nürnberg,Dresden and Munich next to smaller ones like Rothenburg. Good to see old german cities as wroclaw(Breslau) and Strasburg still maintain the xmas market tradition.
Cologne number one? Sorry, but this is one of the least attractive large cities in Europe. Almost entirely destroyed during WW2, ist was rebuilt in typical post war europian architecture. Dull, functional and without any charme. The christmas market might be beautiful, the city definitely is not. No comparison with the other featured cities.

The first written record of the decorated Christmas tree in 1510 comes from Riga. Ch.tree was set up in Riga(Latvia) near the Black Head House by merchants of the Guild and decorated with the artificial roses.

Cologne isnt the best german Xmasmarket by far its one of the worse ones even. The most famous are Nürnberg,Dresden and Munich next to smaller ones like Rothenburg. Good to see old german cities as wroclaw(Breslau) and Strasburg still maintain the xmas market tradition.
I disagree, Alsace is the capital of Christmas and it is worth the first place
Cologne number one? Sorry, but this is one of the least attractive large cities in Europe. Almost entirely destroyed during WW2, ist was rebuilt in typical post war europian architecture. Dull, functional and without any charme. The christmas market might be beautiful, the city definitely is not. No comparison with the other featured cities.
