  • Hmmm..what would I pay to see these very same scenes from say 1978..where the Northwest jets would all' read' Northwest Orient in the silver and dark blue broken cheatline scheme? Answer: whatever it takes!
    But serious, this is the next best thing i guess. Recalling the time when the big red tails were swarming all over Narita. oh the memories..!

    The last ever NWA Bowling shoe 747-251B i ever flew was from HKG-NRT on October 2001. And the last NWA 747-200 in the final, silver livery from NRT-HKG on June 2006. Miss those days!!!

    Pure nostalgia. We used to fly Northwest all the time through NRT.

    Fun fact, N631US is still flying today as EX-47002. I was shocked to find that out!

    Ah so good to see these beasts again :) Remember seeing them mix with the DC10's at LGW in the early 2000's - contrast to all the other 'boring' modern stuff around.

      I agree. I really have to say that the early 2000s were one of the best times for planespotting, since the classics coexisted with the 777s, the -400s, the A330s, etc. Plus there was less consolidation.

    Thanks so much for adding this video. In 2000, I flew from Pittsburgh to Taipei via Detroit and Narita. The 747-200s were a sight to behold. It was almost like going back in time, as we were surrounded primarily by 400s. I'd like to give an honorable mention to the fleet of DC10s I saw earlier that day in Detroit. They will never be forgotten.

      Glad you liked it, as a kid over in Taipei (dad's job) I would be eager to be anywhere near the HSA Compound in downtown Taipei as the daily Northwest Orient 747 streamed just 100ft overhead landing at the old downtown airport, then I'd take the local bus to the airport and take photos from the observation deck, the NWA 747 totally dominated the small airfield. A year later Singapore brought their 747-200 in twice a day, 1 flying SIN-HKG-TPE-Tokyo and the 2nd Tokyo-TPE-HKG-SIN. It was too cool to both of those there.

    @Starboard76 Im not an aircraft engineer but I was amazed at what I saw from the airport-resturant at Narita T1 in August 1997...the UA & NW B747S tattered,repaired,dirty and looking ooldish...some of my Hongkong-friends told me that NW was half-price from HKG to NRT compared to JL or CX..the US carriers made a side market in Asia transporting local passangers and giving discounts..mayby the older airplanes play a part.

    (cont'd) And there were more classics than -400s then. And liveries were mixed. NW Northwest Orient type livery mixed in with the newer livery seen in this video.UA had the grey livery mixed in with the old white livery. Couldn't believe how many 747s seen at one airport. Also saw AA and Swissair MD-11s. Arrived on a -400 from JFK and left on a -200 to MNL with the classic NW Orient scheme and paint peeling on the nose. Love the announcement tone at NRT too.

    I TOTALLY agree, THE BEST. I was apalled at their last all silver & cheap NWA logo right before they went away!

  • @am1966ath
    @am1966ath 13 лет назад

    @hmasurg NWA flew to Narita from Newyork,Chicago,Detroit,San Francisco,Los Angeles and Honolulu and some of the B747S continued on from Narita to Hongkong,Bangkok,Singapore,Manila,Shanghai,Seoul. These B747S that you see on the video were very old even in the late 1990S..early Seventies frames..where replaced by A330 and some B744...Japan airlines hates this "hub" of NWA now Delta and United on their home turf and their 5th freedom rights..they have tried for ages to have these rights rewoked.

    @Starboard76  13 лет назад

    @am1966ath yep, UA 747-100s & -200s were in that great of shape either.It's why both picked up second hand models. When the 747-400 (delayed) came off the line the demand exceeded availability..thus why the used 747-200 market faired so well.

  • @am1966ath
    @am1966ath 13 лет назад

    @Starboard76 Now I know why I saw so many old DC10S,TRISTARS & B747-200S flying around Asia in NW or UA colours in the late 1980S early1990S..Ithought that the US carriers were cash trapped and haveing huge fleets of old airplanes(Northwest Orient having a huge collection of DC-9,B727,747-200 &DC10) they mayby decided to use them instead of getting more modern and flashier planes like SIA,KE or CX..in a way that make sense..an airline fly people,not airplanes.

  • @hmasurg

    How was NW operatins to and from Narita? were their flights out of the states solely from Detroit? and would they fly around asia from NRT..I used to see the NW 747 in MNL. I am assuming this was in the late 90's or early 2000's... It is amazing to me how suddenly the 747 became a rare aircraft to see (even in asian airports). Sad but true.

    Thank you so much for the upload. I was amazed by all of the 742s when I flew to Taipei via Narita in 2000. Earlier that day, I also had the pleasure of seeing a host of DC-10s take off/land in slushy Detroit conditions, complete with some major vortices.

  • @Starboard76

    this was done in 2000 & 2001. I remember the late 1980s -1990s at Narita and boy do I wish I was filming back then! To see all the Northwest Orient 747s classic again..would be way cool. I'm shocked that the japanese video shooters got soooo little of that and of Pan Am at Narita - it must not have been a favorite to see among locals, also they didn't shoot a lot of ANA 747 L-1011 with the mohawk livery..but they've shot tons of JAL action back then. Very odd.

    @Starboard76 Thats true..but in 1978 for example I flew AA B747 LAX-JFK and they had, if not SIA service so much better than you get today..warm,big meal with cutlery and glass...but with de-regulation USA skies became flying greyhound-buslines with people only caring for the price..service,food and smiles vanished.
    SIA is a very rich and well-organized airline but untill mid-80S its fleet of A300 and B743/747 was small..US carriers had armadas of old aircrafts..and murdering competition.

  • @Starboard76
    @Starboard76  13 лет назад

    @am1966ath precisely, and Northwest 'owned' many of those aircraft you mentioned. NWA wasn't big into leasing until Cheechi took the helm. Those DC-9s, many which are/were 40+ years old..now that's old! But they were long paid for..so they were cash cows although they were guzzling fuel.

  • @Starboard76
    @Starboard76  13 лет назад

    @hmasurg ...now that I think about it, add Guam and Saipan to that NRT list. NWA was ultra busy in and out of NRT in those days.

    wow, so this scene continued into the 2000's.when did you finally see more -400's than -200s at Narita?I remember in 1992 even seeing UA -100s still with the three-window upper deck and rotating beacons.Do you have the old OAG NW or UA itineraries for these birds?When this was filmed,did some or most of these originate from the US or were most of them used on intra-Asia missions only and the only -400s used on the long-haul transpacific flights?Guessing they would be used at least from LAX/SEA?

  • @am1966ath

    @Starboard76 the ''cheap " tickets has to do with when you book them...some lowcost-carriers can be more expensive than ordinary carriers if you boofk last minute..today you can pay premium price and receive nada-service. Have flown Hongkong-Taipei on THAI ..you get a food-box but the stewerdesses are gorgeous and the B777 great..but you get more on the 2.40hrs flight from Bangkok to Hongkong.

    what year was this? reminds me of the airport scene at narita when I transited through Narita in 1992 and eating at the restaurant with my uncle who lives in Tokyo and met us there. That restaurant has one of the best viewing I've seen.You see the satellites, taxiways and the single runway. 1992 was one of the best viewing IMO because there was a great mixture of new and classic. UA and NW 747 classics mixed with the still-fairly-new 747-400s from both airlines.

    @Starboard76 NWA started serving Shanghai,Tokyo(Haneda) and Seoul , in 1947 from Detroit and Minneapolis/St.Paul..by Constellation..the only other competitior was PANAM DC-4S..neither JAL nor Lufthansa came along untill 1954/55..Tokyo-Hongkong took 8hours and Hongkong-Calcutta some 12hours..a ticket from the US to Asia was nearly the same as buying a car so it was not Mrs.Kwok from Chinatown or Barabara from Detroit who bougt a chepo ticket on the internet..thats why they had 5th freedom rights.

  • @Starboard76
    @Starboard76  13 лет назад

    @am1966ath ..yup..and they looked tattered and beat up when they arrived on this side of the pond too. Along with Pan Am and TWA's 747s. The reason for cheap pricing however may have had more to do with 'lesser inflight services' versus the asian carriers. The Asian carriers then and now are highly competitive when it comes to 'inflight services'. Pax on the 1:16min TPE-HKG run are treated WAAAYYYYY better than US passengers flying 4-5 hours LAX-JFK - in economy!
