On local walks in Yorkshire, we often bump into our friends from the local Protestant church we started in in 2009. It's such a joyful moment to tell them our journey to the SSPX from the Church of England. It was to our advantage that our local town has not had a Catholic Mass since the Chapel of Ease was changed to Church of England by Henry Vlll. This kept us clear from the New Mass and took us logically straight to the SSPX in 2018.

This excellent series should be required viewing for those who desire, not only a deeper and clearer understanding of how and why the present crises of the Church came to be, but of why the SSPX exists and for its necessity. The state of emergency has only grown more acute as time places more distance from the end of the Council. Time has done more, in fact to bring greater focus and scrutiny to the SSPX. And time will hatch its truth.

I traveled to mexico. Could not find a latin mass. Went to the local new mass church. Priest played the guitar during the mass and walking through the main aisle. God help us to see that through reason the Lord is trying to point to the true mass. No coincidence that the own bishop took away the obligation to go to the new mass and people that desired to still receive our Lord went to find Him at a Latin Mass. I am thankful now it makes sense in my heart that I just should have prayed the rosary and the readings rather then expose my soul to a Samaritian type worship. A religion should give due justice to God, the new rite aims towards human respect and dumbs down the path to grow a fear of God out of Love. A true respect and fervor for the supernatural faith. Praise God and Our Lady of Fatima.

Thankfully the one NO I went to in Mexico (was before my confirmation) wasnt that bad. No terrible hymns/instruments, straight forward liturgy (at least I think, I don't know a ton of Spanish) and a lot of people actually didn't come up for communion hopefully signifying that they did not want to receive not properly disposed. They even looked at me funny when I went up for a blessing (I don't think I had attended my first TLM at this point).

Great series. A logical counter argument to the 2nd part of Q5 would be: "The post-conciliar church is taking a classic Protestant stance by protesting the pre-conciliar Church of 2000 years." One who expects one council to supersede and negate all previous councils has failed to understand apostolic succession, replacing it with relativistic descendent superiority.

Years ago, I visited a Novus Ordo church where a friend of mine spent an hour searching for the tabernacle because it stayed in another room where no one could see it from any pew. During a Ukrainian Divine Liturgy, an altar girl held a cloth while the congregants received the Blessed Sacrament.

  • @joshuareagan8819

Perhaps on the objection to the diversity of liturgies I recall Fr. Ripperger saying that all rites have their origin from an actual apostle that logically developed slowly over time by the guidance of the Holy Ghost, and to add to that it would seem The Church is more of a custodian of liturgy rather than its author, as is the Deposit of Faith as a whole as the property of God to be handed down. The Novus Ordo on the other hand is the only one (even though it’s technically classified as the Roman rite) in which such drastic changes were made, things omitted, and things conjured up from scratch.

Regarding the SSPX's teaching authority, 'My sheep know My voice.' For whatever it's anecdotally worth, my family, by the grace of God, went from an Archdiocesan NO to ICKSP TLM. This Series, however, is a real historical, liturgical, intellectual ear opener. Through it, IMHO, our Lord is speaking to confused, dismayed members of His Flock, like me. Thus, we now worship at St. Anne's in Livonia, whose pastor recently lauded CCS from the pulpit. P.s. Primitivism is liturgical Protestantism in pseudo-historical clothing. TY, Father Franks. I have been to some beautiful Byzantine liturgies, and I have been to some awful ones. In one of them, I was shocked how much the Liturgy of St John Chrystosom was altered to have the feel of Novus Ordo mass , and in another the priest sprinkled the Precious Blood liberally and intentionally as people received Communion. The Precious blood was everywhere: on the faithful, on the cloth with which he held the chalice, on the floor. I was throughly mortified. I know that at least some Ukrainian Catholic priests receive most of their seminary instruction in Roman Catholic seminaries and then they get a couple years of instruction at the end specific to their liturgies.

The same diocesan priest, using the old Rituale Romanum, has also acted as the official witness at a wedding at the same SSPX chapel with the SSPX chaplain assisting him. Do we know for a fact that in medieval cathedrals the tabernacle was placed in a side chapel, or in a corner of smaller churches? Is it in the writings or manuscripts or is there some other way to verify this? Was it in all European nations or states, or only some? It does seem out of character, but if that’s the way it was, then that’s the way it was. It could be a partial justification for placing the tabernacle where we often find it in contemporary churches, but to my mind it does seem irreverent to take the tabernacle away from a central, prominent position in the church.

Thank you for the great series and a focus on so important and central topic. I was always wondering why:
1- FSSPX does not use "Quo Primum" stating that it did not preclude future popes to establish new rites. On the other hand, since Trent effectively frozen all rites (older than 200 years) and canonized Roman Latin, how it is even possible that new rite could be even considered?
2- I am not sure if the argument of "fruits of NOM" can stand. When abp Lefebvre decided in 70s to not follow the Pope with regards to NOM, while the wisdom could predict tragic results of NOM, there were no evidence, not yet. And the justification still had to be made.
3- Perhaps I misheard, but somewhere in this series (probably fr. Robinson) said that NOM was promulgated by the Pope. But others say there is no single signature of the Pope under NOM and there is only a notification of by the for the Doctrine. So how it should work?

There are still major issues. For example, the fact that the priest genuflects after the Elevation rather than immediately after the Consecration implies the consent of the people is needed to confect the Eucharist, a Jewish seder prayer instead of an offertory, and on and on.

4:40 Novus ordo deficient and dangerous to the faith but on another video the human catechetical emphasis of the NO is criticized. Instead worship and offering to God is prime in TLM. Hence readings in Latin at the altar. No so in Byzantine Rite where the Epistle may be chanted from the naive by layman and Gospel by priest facing the people in the vernacular. The offertory and consecration is done facing tabernacle in the vernacular as it is addressed to God.

  • @aperta7525

The medievals did on average have a lack of devotion to the Blessed Sacrament. That is the average of the human race. Human nature is darkened by Original Sin and its generational consequences. Being acutely conscious of God does not come to us naturally.
The question should be and should have been, "What does God want? How does God want us to worship Him? What is it that pleases God (not just what He accepts, but what is pleasing)?"
We Trads actually have a form more in common with the children of Israel relative to the Temple and Sanctuary and Holy of holies than with the medievals. If the Novus Ordo proponents aspire to the corrupt eras of man, that resembles to me a mockery of the Christian Religion and amounts to be kind of their problem precisely.

I understand and respect everything you are trying to do. But to hint or outright say that going to a Novus Ordo mass or other officially sanctioned rite by the magisterium is sinful is overstepping your authority and going too far. There’s only one Sspx church is my general vicinity and it’s almost 1:45 away by car. I think it’s dangerous to tell Catholics they can’t attend their local Novus Ordo mass to worship God and fulfill our Sunday obligations and still have problems with the modernist, ecumenical, naturalist undercurrents destabilizing the church. Two things can be true at once: the Novus Ordo mass is deficient but completely valid and reform needs to take place at the highest levels of the church.
