Dear Fr, Im a retired doctor. In my work I saw many people over the years who would not "get better" in spite of my very best efforts. I would beat myself up trying this or that, second guessing my knowledge, the way I managed their problem etc etc etc. I came to the realisation, like you, that there are some people who will never get better. Their problems are insoluble even by the best doctors in the world. My role therefore is to support them, help them get through life in the best way I can. Once I removed the burden of the "big cure" off my shoulders, I felt much better inside. I could more clearly focus my attention and medical energies to do the things within my powers and help these patients better, without the impossible expectations one can put on ones self. I wish you well Fr. Happy Christmas!

Father Casey, I am a doctor and I had my frustrations early in my career when I dealt with medical issues that I cannot fix for my patients and I later realized that I am an MD not GOD and I am glad that you realized that you are a father but not Heavenly Father. Many years ago as a new nurse, we had a 15 year old patient who we knew well because he had osteosarcoma. On the night he was dying, his oncologist was leaning against my desk and sort of talking to himself saying, "Did I do everything right? Did I do all I could?"
30 years later it stuck with me because I knew him to be a good man and capable physician yet he doubted himself in that moment.
A priest is like a physician for our soul. Things don't always go the way we would like, but it's always in God's hands.
Just know that you do help so many even if it's to give us words to share and in ways you will not be privy to until you meet our maker.
And the physicians commenting, thank you too. Your job is so hard and I've learned a lot about life from some really great people with M.D. behind their name.

@@lnl3237 I appreciate your words. I agree with you that as fallen human race we are easily depleted because of our sins we can’t hold well to the guidance of the Holy Spirit. I would probably chose the word disappointed from some of the humans who refuse to join him to his eternal kingdom.

Whenever I feel submerged by too many problems (my husband got a brain tumor at the age of 41, with four young children to raise...) I ask Mary to hold my hand and stand close to Her by the Cross, looking to Her and to Jesus... We need not change the world, we need to change our heart. Our small contribution being offered to Jesus, makes it possible for Him to do miracles. I can testify He worked miracles in my life! He is my Lord and my King. Sure He gave power to his disciples and Mother but nothing would happen without Him bc He works through them not theirselves bc they can't do anything without His power. So basically first pray to God and ask if He work through other disciples . Fr. Casey, when I became a nurse 32 years ago, many people said: “You can change the world.” I couldn’t even change nursing. In over 30 years, nurses still face the same challenges with staffing, pay, benefits, and respect that we have faced the entire time, some areas have mild improvement, some have backslidden. I have come to understand that I can’t change anyone. All I can do is meet them where they are, give them reasons to change, and love them no matter the outcome of their decisions. Burnout is a moral injury, it shows that you’re involved in things you care deeply about. Make sure you take time to spend time with people that refill you, because many people take emotional and spiritual energy from you. That energy has to be replaced. Yours in Him, Amy

I have raised two sons, and when I found you on RUclips I was filled with Hope. Like you and so many, I was “trapped without agency”, but hearing a young man describe and witness to the faith I have struggled to keep and defend was life-changing for me. Thank you for this beautiful, humble Advent reflection. May the peace of God that transcends all understanding be with you.

I think it's called a 'Savior complex", Father C. There are among us idealists, high-achievers, or simply compassionate Christians who sometimes succumb to it. But you've described it well and shared your own epiphany with sincerity. This makes the wisdom you've just imparted powerful yet soothing at the same time. Thank you and have a blessed Advent!

the Serenity prayer: "God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference." (and I usually add: "And Lord, smack me upside the head if I start to act like a know-it-all who treats You like a genie.")
But humour aside, this reminds me of something I read in a devotional once: "Sometimes it takes greater faith to allow something to fall apart than to keep praying to stop it from happening." Sometimes we really need to let go and let God. Is it difficult? UhhYES. A daily battle for me. But sooner or later I reach the point where I have no choice but to say "God, I give up. I give in. It's Your turn now."

This reminded me of a line from The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis. For context, the line is spoken by a demon, addressing another.
“Do not be deceived, Wormwood. Our cause is never more in danger than when a human, no longer desiring, but still intending, to do our Enemy's will, looks round upon a universe from which every trace of Him seems to have vanished, and asks why he has been forsaken, and still obeys.”

I'm not saying I will become a Catholic (I'm actually investigating orthodoxy at the moment), but I think that watching your vids made me a bit more open to change and a bit more open to considering a different viewpoint.

I love this. It’s just like it’s said in the Mass, “Through Him, with Him and In Him”. It’s His Kingdom. His plan. We do the human stuff, He does the superhuman stuff.
    All outcomes end in Him.

I have been in the same boat, and, I had to accept the fact that I can't change everyone and everything. I don't respond to every negative thing I see on Facebook or Twitter. I bypass that completely now. I can't change the minds of folks that have no desire to be open to a challenge. I understand that when speaking of faith matters with others, that, sometimes, I am the one who plants the seed, and someone else will have to do the watering of that seed. I pray and know that my prayers are being heard, and answered, deferred or denied, according to His plans. One day we will find out what prayers really impacted others. You are appreciated. You don't have to be perfect. It is part of being human. Keep up the battle!

For years I prayed to just understand how to give things up to God and no longer allowing them to cause me stress. I couldn't even begin to imagine how to go about that. Then about 2 weeks ago I realized I didn't need to give anything up to God. The problem was that I thought I had any control in the first place. It was terrifying then freeing. Thank you for all you do. ❤

I thank you because I really needed to see your video today. Currently going through some struggles of my own similar to you where you just feel no matter how hard you try, some people are just resistant to change, which especially hurts in my situation as it deals with a close relative in my family. You’ve helped me see that sometimes, I need to accept that there are some problems that I cannot solve and are out of my control.

I just wanted you to know that I'm so happy you are going through RCIA! We welcome you to our Catholic faith! It is encouraging to hear that folks are still coming to the faith. In a time when it may not be socially acceptable to be religious, it means a lot to me to know people out there can see all the good things Catholicism has to offer. I am also going through a struggle with a family member. I can't fix it and I wish so much that I could. I have tried so many ways and nothing works. So I have to accept that I just can't fix this, at least now. Maybe God has another time and another way for me. God bless you on your journey 🙏

What a wonderful message. In many ways it is consistent with the spirit of Twelve Steps. (Step One: we acknowledged that we are powerless...). I would even say that this was a great explanation of Matthew 26:11. Most of all, what you managed to do without saying it out loud is to proclaim that we need to dedicate ourselves to true humility. Amen to that. Blessings.

I’m a much more content and patient young man after beginning to realize the meaning of God’s will be done, not mine.
