  • The question of one's worthiness to receive communion as a pro-choice politician has surfaced with the election of Joe Biden. Many Catholics have debated this topic. I'd like to just say something about the Eucharist.

Many years ago, my church had a Vietnamese priest. He had spent many years in a Cambodian prison camp. One Corpus Christi, he gave a sermon, telling us how Red Cross workers would smuggle consecrated hosts into the camp for the Catholic prisoners. One of his friends, a Buddhist monk, told him how he envied the unity the Catholics had with the Eucharist. That was 40 years ago, but my friends and I remember this.

Fr Mike Schmitz put it well, “Communion is medicine for the sick, but it is not medicine for the dead. Confession is medicine for the dead.” The wages of sin are death, so we must first be reconciled to God before entering into this covenant, otherwise we are guilty of nothing less than the murder of Christ. It is for this reason that such a restriction is an act of charity.

The Bible supports capital punishment. The Catholic Church had supported capital punishment until last century, when it started to reconsider it. I think that the focus on politicians and their worthiness to receive the Eucharist, we are ignoring a larger issue; there are likely many Catholics who receive communion unworthily-whether it is a person who is contracepting, a person who skips mass and doesn’t go to confession, people who are living together in a sexually active relationship outside the bonds of marriage, and the list goes on and on. This is not just about Joe Biden, and you are right-we need to examine ourselves as well.

It's not the action itself that makes a person unworthy. It's the way this action is done. One cannot receive communion if one carries guild for grave sin. The gravity is not defined solely by whether it touches a grave matter or it touches not a grave matter. Sin's gravity is also defined by persons freedom and consciousness in doing this sin. We can check if the matter is grave, such as we know that abortion is of grave matter, but we cannot check the other two requirements for they are presented exclusively to God and the sinner. So not every person who contracepting and doing any other sin is unworthy, but can be. That is the reason one should not judge another. We can say that the action is evil for can know it, but we cannot say the person has sinned or sinned gravely for we cannot know it.

When Jesus told the woman to "Go and sin no more", He wasn't lording it over her, but rather He was allowing her (and us) to know the path of inclusion into the Kingdom of God. *By upholding His way shown there with people like Biden and others, we aren't showing ourselves better, but rather *also showing the path to heaven as partaking of the Eucharistic host unworthily will d@mn the soul (1 Cor. 11:27),* thus repentance and confession (per John 20:23 and 1 John 1:8-10 of Sacred Scripture) are essential. St. Paul also told the Corinthian church to cast out a Corinthian mother and son for open, flagrant mortal sin.
St. Paul warned humanity of the consequences of sin (in 1 Cor. 6:9-10, Gal. 5:19-21, etc) which Jesus Christ gave His life to free us from.
Jesus said to *"Judge righteous judgment",* and there's nothing more righteous than He or His words, and so when *we open the Bible and reveal what it says,* we aren't judging, but rather it is God who judges, yet so many want to attack the messengers of this and put barriers up between the messengers and humanity (Rom. 10:14) who point all of the aforementioned out.
1 Timothy 5:20: *As for those who persist in sin, rebuke them in the presence of all, so that the rest may stand in fear.*
Ephesians 5:11: *Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them.*
People have to be careful not to isolate themselves from the Eucharistic host. By following Jesus' commandments, Sacred Scripture and Tradition, the full deposit of faith, etc, then we can receive the host along with finding a place in God's family, for Jesus said "If you love me, you'll keep my commandments." (John 14:15).

Paul immediately follows them with an admonition: “Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of profaning the body and blood of the Lord.” Paul even suggests to the Corinthians that this “is why many of you are weak and ill, and some have died.” It is not loving to give Communion to a person in a state of grave sin, for it may harm him more than it helps him. Like a patient who needs surgery but must first be made strong enough that the surgery does not kill him, the person in mortal sin must go to Confession before approaching the altar.

Dear Father Casey, I believe in the Covenant between God and I in regards to receiving Christ at Communion. I agree with you that asking the question here is appropriate, but nobody else knows what is in my heart (or Joe Biden's heart) related to our Covenant with God. The American Bishops made a conscious decision to politicize the Eucharist which I find to be offensive. I am a sinner -all of the time -and am not worthy of benefiting from God's covenant with me, but I receive Him when I participate in the mass. A covenant does not go away when we sin, but calls us back to seek forgiveness and to do better. I am disappointed in President Biden's stance on abortion, but do not question his faith or his suitability to receive Christ in Holy Communion. I also believe that this topic tends to make 'True Believers' out of us. We become so intrenched in our opinion that we disregard all points made by others who disagree with our stance. I see this so often in our country now, whether politically left or politically right; Whether pro Black-Lives-Matter or pro Police. Nobody can hear anything when all we do is yell. Acta non verba. Actions not words. It should be a reminder to all of us when we examine our conscience. Biden may say he's a good Catholic but his stance on abortion is irreconcilable to that. Joe Biden's suitability to receive the communion should have been a no brainer when the Catechism (2272) attaches excommunication as penalty to those who cooperate in it. It would not have been politicized this way if he and others were denied communion or excommunicated long ago by their pastors for supporting abortion. But if we try to obscure the issue with nuances and uncertainties, it drags long enough to come to this when enough scandal has already been done. The clear line in the sand should have been drawn long ago.
A soft rebuke will not change Biden and others. Its likely they know that they defy Church teaching but continue to sacrilegiously receive our Lord anyway. That, even as a fellow sinner, I cannot stand. But a hard discipline like a clear denial of Communion and excommunication might just shake them to reconsider. How long will the bishops have to wait to make a clear action on this when our Lord has repeatedly been taken sacrilegiously by public dissenters to the faith? I personally don’t belong to any party but please, BLM is anti-Christian and anti-family because they’re Marxists. Christians should be outright opposed to their agenda. I absolutely loved what the father said about communion, because it is so in line with what I believe, even though I am not a Roman Catholic. Listening to him I felt such a tug on my heart and a desire to be a better and more committed Christian; I am even tempted to investigate further what it would mean for me to become Catholic, because my own tradition seems lacking in many ways. I only draw back because I do not understand the doctrine of the real presence, and I see what he calls the altar, which by definition is a place of sacrifice, as rather a table where the bread and the wine, which represent Jesus' body and blood, are received. In my view all sacrifice was supplied once for all by the Lord Jesus.
However, I loved the father's phrase that it is a ratification of the new covenant performed in a corporate setting. And that I must be slow, very slow, to judge others, but quick to examine my own heart. I appreciated his reluctance to pass judgment from afar, but allowing God's grace to work through the communicant's local priest. This in a way similar to the way we make medical decisions in consultation with our own doctor. So we must consult our priest or pastor in making spiritual decisions which have much more consequence.

      @kevinlove4356 2 года назад +8

Yes, you are absolutely right in writing "... all sacrifice was supplied once for all by the Lord Jesus." Today, in the Eucharist we participate in the once-for-all sacrifice of Jesus upon the Cross. In a very real way we transcend the here and now and participate in the life of God who exists outside of this time and space.
In John 6, Jesus says, "Whoever eats my body and drinks my blood will live in me and I in him." Oceans of ink have been spilled writing about the meaning of the first part of this sentence. But I find it more meaningful to think about what it means to live in Jesus and have Jesus live in me. Jesus living in me means that my life is being transformed into the image of Christ. See Colossians 3.
If my life is hidden with Christ in God (Colossians 3:3) then that means that I too begin to live outside of time and space. And my own suffering becomes united with that of Christ upon the Cross (1 Peter 4:13). By sharing in Christ's suffering, we will also share in his glory when it is revealed.

      Hello Friend,
Please read John 6 50- 70. Jesus told his followers that to have eternal life, you must eat my flesh and drink my blood. Many followers balked at this and did not believe, so they left. Jesus said to the 12 disciples, so do want to leave too? He didn't tell them, boy those guys got it wrong. I was speaking metaphorically. No, he said this is the way to eternal life. Please ponder the gravity of what he is saying.

    • @aszechy

The reason it may seem that way I think is that this is one of the not so many issues where catholic teaching is really at odds with what many non-religous people think (sexual ethics being the other big one). I mean everyone pretty much agrees that murder, stealing, lying, etc. are bad things so there is not much to argue about there. But abortion - now considered a fundamental women's right and and an issue of "reproductive health" by many - and for us, it's just plain murder. Quite a contrast. So while I certaintly think it's not great that the world has come to see us as if we only cared about things like abortion, homosexuality, etc. I believe I understand why this is and I think it's the world's fault, not ours :)

Those like Biden judge themselves actually (Mt. 12:37)
1.) Biden on 9/2/2021 said (per Twitter): he is “looking at what steps we can take to ensure that Texans have access to safe and legal abortions.” And he said “we” thus including himself in this endeavor.
2.) Biden on 9/3/2021: “I continue to be a strong supporter of Roe v Wade.”
3.) Biden: “I respect those who believe life begins at the moment of conception and all. I respect that, don’t agree but I respect that.”
In Gal. 5:19-21 St. Paul lists other mortal sins that 1 Cor. 6:9-10 doesn't have but there is some overlap and thus all sins from 1 Cor 6:9-10 and Gal. 5 are mortal sins and one would partake unworthily of the Eucharist (1 Cor.11:27) in a state of mortal sin.
      Gal. 5:19-21:
[19] Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are fornication, uncleanness, immodesty, luxury, [20] Idolatry, witchcrafts, enmities, contentions, emulations, wraths, quarrels, dissensions, sects, [21] Envies, *murders,* drunkenness, revellings, and such like. Of the which I foretell you, as I have foretold to you, that they who do such things *shall not obtain the kingdom of God.*
Murder is a mortal sin and abortion is murder.

It seems pretty cut and dry. Those in a state of Mortal Sin ought not to receive the Eucharist. (CCC 1415) That's why we have to go to Confession first. Profaning the Eucharist is Sacrilege and a Grave Sin (CCC 2120.)
Often times, one's Mortal Sin is a private affair and so Priests, not being mind readers, freely give the Eucharist at Mass not knowing the State of the individuals receiving.
However, a Priest can and should deny communion to one that he KNOWS is in a state of Mortal Sin (Code of Canon Law 915) until and unless that individual repents and does Penance. To do otherwise is to fail to hinder Sin when the Priest has an opportunity and obligation to do so (he does.) The Priest thereby cooperates and is complicit in the Sin of another (CCC 1868.)
Moreover, one should not even ask for Communion if they are aware of Grave Sin (Code of Canon Law 916.) If Joe Biden observed this, then this wouldn't even be an issue.
If one's Mortal Sin is of a public nature and is common knowledge, then public repentance and Penance is strongly recommended, though no longer required. The Church has long taught that public repentance of public Sin was required (1917 Code of Canon Law 855,) but this was changed in 1983 with the new Code of Canon Law and it's much less harsh wording (1983 Code of Canon Law 915.)
Joe Biden has openly promoted and supported abortion, which Holy Mother Church teaches is a grave sin, the punishment of which is actually excommunication "by the very commission of the offense" (CCC 2171 - 2172.) His Mortal Sin is therefore public, known to all and no Priest can claim not to know about this, unless he lives under a rock.
Unless Joe Biden repents, preferably publically, and renounces abortion and begins working against it with the power of his office, then all Priests have a DUTY to deny him the Eucharist, not so much for the sake of his immortal soul, although important, but rather he must be denied so as not to cheapen the Body and Blood of Our Lord and scandalize others.
The Eucharist is not a cracker and should not be treated as such.
This isn't about "being judgmental," which is not a negative thing to do, it's about the respect and reverence we render to Our Lord as a matter of Justice.
God is owed respect. Forget about what Joe Biden wants or thinks he deserves, the fact is, Christ Himself deserves better treatment and ought not be abused in this way.
What's so unclear about this? Why have you spent 11 minutes basically saying, "Who are we to judge this man?"
The Church has long taught that those in Mortal Sin are to be denied Communion. St. Thomas Aquinas dealt with this issue in the Summa, Question 80, Article 6, "Holy Communion ought not to be given to open sinners when they ask for it." (Summa Theologica, III, Qu 80, art 6)
The Pope has no authority to simply overturn 2000 years of Church teaching. He can have his own opinions of course, but unless he is going to declare with Papal Infallibility that those in Mortal Sin can Receive, then Church teaching on this matter still stands and therefore Joe Biden and any other Catholic public figure are to be denied until they repent, again, preferably publically.
    This isn't that complicated.

If a person uses his mouth to promote what the Church regards as evil, his mouth is closed. The Bishops and the Priests that allow this person the Eucharist must at least consider the issue. Hi Sean.
Hope some day you also think to obey Jesus when he says that all who want eternal life, need to eat his flesh and drink his blood.
Only in his church its possible to make this happen. Not only scriptures say it very clear but listen to Jesus him self who explains it severas times in John 6, pointing the relevance to do it for eternal life.
      John 6: 52-59

52 Then the Jews began to argue sharply among themselves, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?”
53 Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you.
54 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.
55 For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink.
56 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them.
57 Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me.
58 This is the bread that came down from heaven. Your ancestors ate manna and died, but whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.”
59 He said this while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum.
As you noticed, Jesus is telling all of us this spiritual truth, so we must believe Jesus and that is listen him carefully his word, believe what he is saying and must important obey his truth and comandment.
After this revelation to jews, disculpes and all human kind he also said:
      Luke 22: 7-20
14 When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles reclined at the table.
15 And he said to them, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer.
16 For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfillment in the kingdom of God.”
17 After taking the cup, he gave thanks and said, “Take this and divide it among you.
18 For I tell you I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.”
19 And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.”
20 In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.
So its important we all think about our eternal life. Because we must do what Jesus tells us to do, obeying him because that is loving him.
All those who “mentally” desire to love him but does not do what he says have a beautiful feeling but they do not love him in truth.
He loved his Father and he prooved his love by obeying him, offering us his word, truth, revelation and sacrifice.
Jesus sent his disciples to Baptize all human kind so the people are converted from creatures to God’s children.
Therefore when you are Baptized by a priest (with the autority and power of the Holy Spirit), you are converted in Gods son and be able to participate of the flesh and blood of Christ.
Its important that you know this and also that Jesus gave litteraly an order to his apostles to Baptize, Evangelize, Love, Feed with his flesh and blood, and litteraly to forgive your sins to have his grace.
If you are not obeying him, by following his truth on his word, your eternal life will be compromised.
Just think about it when praying and holding the Bible in your hands.
      God bless!!!

The Mystery of Jesus' physical Presence on earth. In other words, the Person of Jesus, our BFF, is with all of us, all the time, anywhere we are: can't see Him; can't hear Him. He is not a figment of our imagination.

It has to have been close to 15 years ago now, when a family member who had been suffering through a tragic time in life came to a wedding and felt compelled to take the Eucharist. He was clearly moved and while most of us were glad to see him reach out, a few were angry. Afterward the service I can remember the priest chastising family members. That was the last time myself and all of my siblings except one, ever walked into a church again. When I saw the Eucharist used as a way of chastising someone who was trying to come out of the depths of disappear, and people in the church decided how they would use it to hurt or separate people these 'men' decided didn't deserve it, it forever changed my view of the sacrament and the church. That was a long time ago now, but I can honestly say that denying the President the Eucharist would be 'man' using the church to further his goals, not Christ's, and it would be more damaging to the church than I think you realize.

Fair points. I do get frustrated though when the only three issues that ever seem to get brought up when discussing denying Communion are abortion, homosexuality and divorced people. Why is there never a call to deny Communion to those politicians who support the death penalty for instance? Or whose policies keep people in grinding poverty, or vote to participate in unjust wars?

This is an old, tired out and completely vague argument. Biden makes it very clear that he will push for the murder of children at a federal level. "politicians whose policies keep people in grinding poverty or vote to participate in unjust wars"...how in the world do you know the actual intention of these politicians? How do you know they are not just completely ignorant? What if they thought they did the right thing? How do you know which ones know they are intentionally leading people astray into evil and constantly pushing for it? These questions wouldn't apply to Biden beacuse, again, Biden makes it VERY clear that he knows exactly what the Catholic Church teaches, yet continues to push for the murder of children. So there is no assumption of Biden's intentions, because he says this himself in public, national speeches. I am not judging, I am simply stating the fact that Biden is completely aware of his actions, and has let the world know what he thinks of his actions, and that you can't compare a poltician who makes his anti-life views clear and pushes policies for it, versus a poltician who doesn't make the best political decisions but it is completely unclear as to what his/her intentions are and if they dissent from very important Catholic teachings.
Aside from that, the main thing that Father Casey is correct on, and this is what our Blessed Lord taught us...that first you need to look at your OWN self and examine your own road to conversion first. This is undoubtedly true, but that doesn't take away from the fact that Biden's views and intentions are very clear, that's all I'm saying. As another comment said, "not my place to judge but I really do wish that he was not putting the rest of us in a position to either ignore or condemn."

2267 Recourse to the death penalty on the part of legitimate authority, following a fair trial, was long considered an appropriate response to the gravity of certain crimes and an acceptable, albeit extreme, means of safeguarding the common good.
Today, however, there is an increasing awareness that the dignity of the person is not lost even after the commission of very serious crimes. In addition, a new understanding has emerged of the significance of penal sanctions imposed by the state. Lastly, more effective systems of detention have been developed, which ensure the due protection of citizens but, at the same time, do not definitively deprive the guilty of the possibility of redemption.
Consequently, the Church teaches, in the light of the Gospel, that “the death penalty is inadmissible because it is an attack on the inviolability and dignity of the person”, [Francis, Address to Participants in the Meeting organized by the Pontifical Council for the Promotion of the New Evangelization, 11 October 2017] and she works with determination for its abolition worldwide.

This is an important discussion about authority and spiritual health. To bring in my own two cents, it is indeed meet to exercise restraint when it comes to judging Biden. Christ says, judge not lest ye be judged. This does not mean we shouldn't judge, but that when we judge we are going to be held to the same standards we impose upon others. We need to be careful to not fall to the sin of pride in doing this. Because of this, it is wise to submit to your spiritual authorities on this. When Biden's bishop says that Biden should not take communion, we should submit to that. When the pope of Rome overrides that, we should submit to that too. If you disagree, the best thing you can do is to pray for your leaders, but be careful not to imply judgement in your prayers without willingness to be held to the same standard. It's easy to say, but I'm guilty of this kind of judgement myself, I beg your forgiveness.
In the next point, I also agree with you that an excommunication should not be political. It has been said that some excommunications were politically motivated in history and this is undeniably true. But political leaders (and ordinary laymen) have been excommunicated before as a call to repentance. Remember St. Ambrose excommunicating Emperor Theodosius because he had caused a massacre. St. Ambrose felt obligated to bar Theodosius from the eucharist because he deemed it dangerous for Theodosius' spiritual health to consume the blood and body of Christ in his current state, a change of heart was needed first.
It is traditional for committers of serious sins like adultery and assault to be barred from the eucharist. When they repented, they would be admitted to communion right before Easter, after having done the Lent fast.
The notion that holiness can be dangerous is clearly expressed in the Old Testament. The closer you were to the Holy Place, the more strict you had to follow the purity laws. So it goes Strangers -> Hebrews -> Priests -> High Priest.
When Aäron's sons went into the tabernacle, they were burned by holiness because they were impure. This is the very real danger of the eucharist that we should not lose out of sight. We need to purify our hearts before eating the eucharist, because the spiritual risk is real.

Communion is a covenant, yes, but it is God's work and God's gift alone. Communion, like Baptism, is not the work of human hands, but of God's hands. We humans are incapable of earning or making such lofty promises. We can't even ask for God's forgiveness except that the Holy Spirit moves us to do so. So, in taking Communion, I'm not signing a contract with God. God knows I'm incapable of keeping it. But what I am doing is receiving God's grace and mercy, and being healed in it.

Even if we were a predominately Catholic nation, the President would still have a duty to Americans of all faiths. Hindus, Muslims, Jews, Christians, the religiously unaffiliated, and the million other varieties of faith as well as their countless sects and schisms. All of these faiths have different, sometimes even contradictory beliefs, and all should be entitled to the same respect and entitlement to practice their beliefs. So thus the only proper route that a quality President would have would be to allow each person the ability to follow the teachings of their own faith and not legislate from their own belief system.
With regards to abortion specifically, other faiths have direct contradictions to the Catholic teaching. There is the Satanic Abortion Ritual that people like to bring up in these discussions, but it's not nearly as interesting as the name would imply nor even the oldest account of religiously accepted abortion. In the Jewish faith, a woman may be commanded by her Rabbi to undergo an abortion if the mother's life would be at risk, as in Judaism the lives of those already living are prioritized over lives that may be. (Though I would like to add I am no Rabbinic scholar and these views may differ between different sects of Judaism as well as the reasons for justification) There are also many other faiths I haven't even listed that similarly condone or even require the procedure across a whole spectrum of causes.
So President Biden is in a bit of a pickle. He can choose to be a good President and allow Americans as individuals to choose to live their lives according to their own morals and religious teachings. Or he can choose to be a good Catholic and legislate from his Bible and transform America into a more Catholic nation. It is not an enviable position to be in and I'm certain this conflict weighs heavily on his mind, even without the Internet giving their two cents on the issue. All we can do is pray for him to find resolution to this conflict he is facing and hope he finds peace.

I mean sure, but should the KKK be granted freedom to lynch black people?

@@abelj5145 I think if a KKK were President he would have to follow the law that murder is against the law and against the Church. The problem for me is that Biden is going against the laws of the Church but is following the law of the Country which he swore an oath to uphold. More complicated.

@@marthawissmann8268 He is not just following or "upholding" the law. He is working very hard, or getting other people to work hard, at removing any semblance of legal protection for pre-born children. He is working to codify Roe v. Wade. He should refrain from sacrilegious Communion as should anyone else, politician or not, who supports pro-choice.
Hitler was Catholic by birth. If he had needed Catholic support to get elected, he too, would have made a big show of his Catholicism , all the while supporting mass genocide. We need manly clergy to confront him and his like.

Biden is NOT in a pickle; he specifically chose to push abortion. He rescinded the Mexico City Policy and the ban on Title X funding for abortions. He could have easily and legally kept those policies in place by simply doing nothing, but he chose to go out of his way and repeal them. He is specifically pro abortion.

@@e_rock_3149 yeah also Judaism in no way requires elective abortion. There are plenty of pro-life Jews.

I would find his case more convincing if he used the same argument to argue that, say, Bill Barr should also be denied Communion because of his support of capital punishment, which is specifically condemned in the Catholic Catechism.
I have yet to hear a single high-profile American cleric argue that Bill Barr should not receive Communion.
Which renders the focus on Biden as utter hypocrisy and politically-motivated.
The tacit approval of far right politics from large sections of the Catholic Church in the USA is utterly crazy. I would have very bitter taste in my mouth as a Catholic in America.

Although I’m not a believer, I sent this video to my sister/BIL/nephews, since this is a beautiful explanation of the sacrament. It’s why I cannot walk to the alter at a wedding and/or holiday, since I do not want to disrespect the tradition

Your comment is possibly one of the more sensitive and tender replies. Especially since you state you are not a believer. I think it is not only that you don't wish to disrespect the tradition; but that your spirit recognizes on a deeper gut level, that God is there.
