I'm a former deputy sheriff, so you know how I feel about what he did. However, the fact that he plead guilty and is testifying the way he is proves that he's really a good person who REALLY phktup. Had he never been in the military and gone to Iraq, I suspect that this event would have never occurred. I've never seen a testimony like this. Especially in a case like this. He sounds 100% sincere to me. The family will never get over their rage, and I completely understand that. I've experienced the loss of a fellow officer more than once, and it creates a rage. This guy is not the typical cop killer.

I agree.. people think because he's not crying he's lying.. people who cry and act all stupid are the ones I never believe... they cry only for themselves.. and man being a cop these days must be extremely hard. People act like cops are supposed to be infallible... that's an expectation that can't be reached.. I've been in all kinds of trouble and delt with many a police officer.. and I've found there like all people. One in 50 is a jerk . U treat them good they treat u good. One out of 50 they dont.. just like in life every where else

This is the ONLY time these people have to hold this man accountable.
And don't kid yourself, he's still manipulating.
"You continued to use drugs despite being in the drug treatment program"
"Yes, I used fentanyl, to try to kill myself."
See....All he needed to say was "yes", and we don't know if he tried to kill himself. If he did, he failed. Which is more than a TAD suspicious as fentanyl is so SO easy to kill yourself with, you don't need to TRY. If he really wanted to kill himself with fentanyl, he'd be dead.
BUT even if that is true. Why did he say that? The only reason is to manipulate the listeners, to feel sympathy for him.

The jury should spare his life. A LWOP term would be sufficient enough. Patrick McDowell did not try to hide something out of his past. And more and more states like Michigan or Virginia abolished capital punishment. That's not a tool of jurisprudence in civilized states and nations. Neither New Zealand, nor Australia or the European Union, nor Switzerland and Norway as neutral nations abolished capital punishment. And the records have shown that the death penalty isn't a deterrent . It's not a game changer and it does not make things more safe an common. It's time to change the bill of rights. Shotguns, firearms, rifles and pistols only should being possessed, carried and used by state officials (= soldiers, police officers, prison staff). Higher education is a privilege of wealthy families. But if the US makes education accessible and affordable to everybody, more citizens can make their money and more people don't feel any need taking/selling drugs and committing murders. Simple as that. And of course: sometimes it happens that even well educated citizens (Ted Bundy) commit horrible , heinous and vicious crimes wich need to become punished. Lifelong without parole is tough enough to protect society from this punks and evil killers. What do you guess: do ya realy belive that Nikk Cruz will ever be able to commit a 2nd Parkland shooting? Regarding the notion of presuming omniscience, that I "act like I know everything", it's not a posture I adopt. Nowhere did I state or imply such.
Now, turning to your other question, 'What would it look like if he meant it?'-to simplify, 👉 congruence is paramount 👈
This encompasses alignment across verbal communication, nonverbal cues, tone, and demeanor. Maintaining this congruence under pressure, such as in a courtroom setting, presents a significant challenge. Interrogators leverage this pressure precisely for this reason.
While the verbal expressions of remorse and empathy may appear convincing, he has clear discrepancies in nonverbal cues, such as the absence of tears or genuine emotional distress, raise flags. Authentic emotional responses are difficult to fabricate, particularly in high-stakes situations.
He said the right words but he expressed little to no emotions. Simply watch a minute or two of his testimony on mute and honestly ask yourself, what emotions am I actually seeing!
I often use a music metaphore for helping my patients and clients: To better understand the mind of those with APD (ie. sociopaths, psychopaths) can hear and sing the words to a song but they can't understand or feel the music because they are capable of hearing the music.
In other words, they know how to use their words to say all the right things when attempting to express remorse but their body language is incongruent, unable to express the emotions those words are implying. This is because they are neurologically incapable of feeling genuine emotions of empathy, sympathy, or really any feelings as it pertains to how others think and feel.
I hope this helps you at have a better understanding as to what I'm referring to. Have a great day. 🙏

I don’t think you will ever here a more sincere statement from someone that has done such a heinous crime. This man is well aware what his consequences are and has no reason to speak so openly and honest about the situation other than to show the family the remorse he feels and the guilt for what he has done. Clearly he is a very intelligent man that could of had a bright future and that was all thrown away because of drugs and bad choices. I’ve been there and I guess I am lucky I was never in his position. Most everyone has drove drunk and gotten away with it then there are others that kill someone while drinking and driving. Same crime just different results. The prosecutor was starting to piss me off by going back on something he already discussed just to make this man more guilty than he already is. It’s a shame what he did and I feel for the deputy and his family. I also feel for this man and the life he unfortunately threw away. It is just tragic all the way around.

I loved the father’s testimony very much. Seemed like he tried so hard to be there and guide Patrick through his life in the best and right way!!
I appreciated the testimony from Patrick as well, I do believe he is remorseful and told more than the absolute truth.
God bless his grandparents who testified as well. Especially on the dad’s side.
Patrick made extremely poor choices and is taking responsibility. Drugs do own you but like he said it is no excuse for what he did.

He is a VERY good manipulator. He is masterful at it. He has avoided mistakes that most people who have been caught doing something horrible did. He's doing the Jeffrey Dahmer routine "I am terrible. I have done such awful things." But at the same time, always sliding in small "it wasn't my fault" bits, while fessing up to the big one because he knows he has to.
    Just like Dahmer.
Still today people talk about how Dahmer was "different from other serial killers. He really seemed to want to know why he did what he did." No he didn't. He knew why he did what he did. He was just manipulating the court and all the US with his act, and even today people still fall for it.
    This man is SO similar.
He got ALL those people in his treatment advocating for him, he had that judge spending hours talking to him. Talking and talking JUST like he's doing now. He is manipulating nonstop, and he is good at it. But watch the details of the stories, the crimes that aren't what he is in court for. See how constantly he minimizes his responsibility.
There is one part that absolutely proves it. And it is when the manipulating and lying really takes off. He'd been doing the humble truthful role up to this point. But from here, he switches gear.
When the prosecutor says: "You failed to use this opportunity after you were given the chance to go to Veterans' Treatment Court, right?"
He replied: "Yes sir, I used fentanyl in a suicide attempt and ended up in hospital."
Right there. He's manipulating again. Right there. And lying.
ALL he needed to say was "yes". But instead of admitting that he just kept using, he instead went for the Pity Grab. There was no legitimate reason to come out with that little anecdote.
And it isn't even believable. Fentanyl kills SO easily. You don't have to "try" to kill yourself with it. It just kills you. The idea that he was actually TRYING to kill himself, with fentanyl, but didn't succeed?
Total garbage. He was using. He was caught using. He used too much fentanyl, so ended up him hospital. So he's trying to pivot and explain this event away AND get sympathy for himself.
It is all total garbage. Even if it is true...no one asked him, so why come out with it?
He didn't answer the question straight.
He pivoted, and tried to get people to feel sorry for him...because he's been doing that for decades. And he lied.
He is MASTERFUL at this. We can see exactly how he worked people with this routine all his life. Now he's fighting for his life, and giving the performance of his life.
I do not believe a single word.
From this point on, he does it constantly. He cannot answer a question without putting responsibility for his actions onto other people, or blaming others for his drug use, drug sales, and thieving.
    1. He says he wanted a drug treatment programme rather than prison "because I wanted the accountability". Oh yeah. He didn't want to avoid prison at ALL. And he kept right on using.
    But then he decides ....
    2. BLAME one of the, many, drug treatment programmes, which the taxpayer paid for. Paid for all his food, his clothing, his housing. It wasn't good enough for him. Didn't come up to his standards. IT failed HIM. HE didn't fail. Not HIM. It was the PROGRAMME"S fault.
3 then he blames THE OTHER addicts in the programme. THEY "failed" HIM.
    4. THEN he says he only started using again because his father sent him a letter that detailed his charges.
Oh, so it WASN"T the other addicts fault? He just finished saying it was and that's why he started using again. Now he's claiming that he wasn't using at that point. It wasn't until..oh boo hoo...he found out that he was still going to be held accountable for SOME, just SOME, of the numerous crimes he'd committed. Now he claims the programme HAD been working up to that point.
Unbelievable. He's blaming the legal system for charging him with the crimes he committed.
    5. when the prosecutor brings up living in a van, he again, pivots, and uses that as an excuse to come up with a story to try to pretend he didn't know that the van was stolen. That he'd forced a guy to settle his drug debt by giving him the guy's mother's car. Again, no one asked where he got that van from. But he was trying to cover himself, in case that came up. And he clearly lied
    6. when the prosecutor points out that he was living off Ms Toll, and also "hanging out" with Noelle, he, again, instead of just answering "yes", tries to push the blame onto Noelle. "SHE contacted ME" But he slips up, He says, " 'She had contacted me because I'd told her I'd got the van back..." So..he contacted HER to "tell her about the van". But he's trying to claim that him contacting her is actually HER contacting HIM. Because, oh that terrible woman "she was trying to get drugs out of me" Well...he was dealing drugs. But once again, he's slipped up. First she contacted him because he'd got the van back. A minute later it's because she "was trying to get drugs out of" a drug dealer. That's usually called: Being a customer. But he's trying to make it out that he was being PURSUED, FORCED to sell drugs. And he throws in "her boyfriend was in jail". Why? To let people know she must be bad, as she has a boyfriend in jail, and she must be bad because she is contacting HIM behind her boyfriend's back. Except..he just said she'd been doing so for weeks, and it was to buy drugs.
7.AND THEN to try to cover his arse for lying to "Bri" and cheating on her, he says "I don't know why I lied because we had agreed to an open relationship." Even trying to slither out of being caught lying to the woman he was living off.
8 But most unbelievable of all...he gives as his reason to come to Nassau...'I had been there 100 times.... with my son." He's now blaming it on his being such a GOOD FATHER. Totally disgusting.
this pos just cannot stop the manipulating, the weaseling out of responsibility for all this crap he was doing, and the lying.
But because he's saying "I feel sick when I think of what I did" he's got people saying "OH he really feels remorse,"
No he doesn't. He's trying to avoid the death penalty. And he is a very practiced manipulator.
He is SO similar to Dahmer in his techniques it is amazing. Disgusting, but amazing.
And people fall for it. That's how this pos kept up his "career" for all these decades.

Obviously, the accused gave a very honest testimony which was seemingly sincere, about the crime he committed that the majority of viewers found heart breaking. Which is fine but unfortunately, I see racial bias with that. . He just seems like a career criminal and unfortunately this officer had the unfortunate experience of coming across the defendant that night. The defendant alone made choices in his life to do drugs and to engage in criminal behavior. Drugs can’t keep being the excuse with individuals after they commit crimes. No one but that individual made that choice.
