  • The original plan was to fish a short window of time in the morning for blackfish (tautog) from the kayaks in maybe 20-30' of water but the waves were a bit more than anticipated and my dad didn't have a drysuit so we decided to just walk down the beach a bit to a few exposed rocks and fish from shore. The rain was on its way as well so we didn't have too much time but we made it work. October is the best time to catch them from shore as they typically are still very shallow - we weren't in more than 8' of water here at these boulders and used solely green crabs for bait. I forgot how much more difficult it is from shore with more snags and more weeds, the fish seem less prevalent and even smarter.

    Hi Peter I have caught a few keepers from shore so far this year. Need a bigger rod 9 foot and at least 30 lb braid with jigs on a fluro leader. They seem like they are a little harder to catch from shore but are a lot of fun when you hook a keeper! Tight lines!

    • @PeterRanieriII
      @PeterRanieriII  10 месяцев назад +1

      Nice Will, thats encouraging to hear, especially if its by us in the western sound! Your so right, a 9' rod and lighter/more invisible leader would def be better for the shore. I was shocked at how smart they were biting the crab, they def are more line shy in the shallows I think but absolutely more rewarding when you find that keeper!

    Hey Peter, when I get stuck fishing for blackfish I tighten the drag almost to a complete lock while also bending the rod as much as possible. I leave it like that and release the bail. That pop of the line reverberates all the way to your stuck gear and usually releases it. I do this as a last resort and have about a 70% to 80%success rate. By the way, that is a terrific scenic fishing spot. Hoping to get out again on the west end this weekend. The waters are slowly cooling to the optimal blackfish temperature range of 50 to 60, so I am hoping that will improve the bite in my neck of the woods. Good luck out there. See you on the next one. Gio, Western Long Island sound.

      @PeterRanieriII  10 месяцев назад +1

      this is brilliant, I gotta try that out, thanks! Such a cool spot, almost all of the middle sound beaches look like this with random large boulders that are exposed. There had to be a good amount of some smaller ones under the surface in the area too because we were getting snagged all over the place, lol. I hope we both get out this weekend, so far it looks fishable, fingers crossed - they really are cooling quick, I think sub 60 very soon if not already. Thanks Gio, see ya on the next one

    • @gm1937
      @gm1937 10 месяцев назад +1

      @@PeterRanieriIItrust me it works but you have to apply enormous pressure to the rod, short of breaking it. The bail needs to be positioned in the right spot so that when you pull it The line pops out and that creates a shockwave all the way to your snagged gear. I'll buy you a beer if you can get that on your underwater camera!

    Great change of pace video! Weekend conditions have been brutal for kayak/small craft. I managed to get out for a couple of hours this past Saturday morning until about 930am and got a few nice over slot stripers. Once I got back to land, I took some crabs over to the Glen cove pier and, somehow, got a nice slot striper with crabs right near the side of the wall. Weird times...

    • @PeterRanieriII
      @PeterRanieriII  10 месяцев назад

      Thanks Steve, yeah sometimes these days are perfect just for slowing it down a bit, and not have to mobilize a watercraft lol. Wow thats a great morning, nice to know about the stripers being around. I also got out for like 1.5hrs that morning but the rain came around 8:30am for me so I called it with one keeper tog. Thats crazy catching a slot near the wall, its not very deep there!

      @@PeterRanieriII 25-30 minute setup/tear down is a grind if only going for an few hour or so. But yeah, there are some big fish blitzing on the surface in hempstead harbor .25 miles from launch. They are pretty easy to find.
      It was crazy...I didn't have the gear with me to pull up a 30.5in striper 20ft out of the water up onto the pier, so I had to drop the pole down onto the beach after I beached the fish and ran like 100 yards all the way around to get down to it.

    • @PeterRanieriII
      @PeterRanieriII  10 месяцев назад

      Very tuff, exactly! It felt like a smarter fish bite, I think they can see the terminal tackle much easier and not as much competition to feed. The snags, omg...lost half a dozen jigs whereas I typically only lose 1 on the kayak. Im glad you can relate,

    Peter
    loved the vid
    please tell me you will invest in a nice 11 or even 12 foot rod, even a cheap one will get that bait way the heck out there
    and in the future when you have more money then you can can buy that really nice surf rod
    I mean it was such a crime to see a person of your skill level to be unable to reach the fish
    then again here is an idea, just get a bunch of 4 oz black fish jigs
    and that should do the trick,,,,,,,
    imagine how far you could throw that 4 oz jig on a 11-12 foot rod
    ( uh about a mile)
    so anyway
    I just want to note how everytime I see that water off the north shore
    I am always= impressed with how freakin wild it is
    , and how the drop off is so drastic
    as compared to the South shore
    the whole miles and miles of beach out there just look like great fishing
    I am really going to try my best to move my life out there
    someday baby someday

    • @PeterRanieriII
      @PeterRanieriII  10 месяцев назад

      Steve, haha ok I'll look into getting a surf rod. I actually had a decent one but sold it bc I was never using it since getting the kayak. Yeah you really need to get out there, just go for a visit sometime to see it, try one of the public parks. It does drop off a bit quicker that the south shore but at least in the middle sound region its actually relatively shallow close to shore. But all you need are a few close rocks and the fish should be there!
