Lightning and electricity DOES NOT ONLY take the path of least resistance. Electricity takes ALL paths, the most current flows along the least resistance path. Thus the lightning will spread out under the tree and the voltage potential difference between different patches of ground and the air above means you will have electricity running through you.
@@Starberry7 Yes, but in miniscule and deliberate amounts. Especially compared to lightning. Our system is immediately overwhelmed with that kind of voltage and amperage. Voltage alone is not fatal by itself if the amount of flow is small. It has to overcome the resistance of skin and hair first.
If you ever get to see a tree struck by lightning in slow motion video, you may see the ground around it showing the root structure of the tree as the lightning follows the roots into the ground.

My biggest fear is being hit by lightning in your car and not knowing what to do if you don't have anything to contact a person. The weather channel had a really good show where it was showing you what would you do? if you were in a certain situation and they covered that.
At least you would be almost for sure completely safe. Cars are coated in conductor (metal) and you are even insulated from the ground by your tires. The electricity would flow almost entirely through that and bypass anyone inside, unless you were very unlucky. Car would stall out but every vehicle on the planet (except the cyber truck lol) has mechanical backup steering and brakes so you could probably be safe as you coast to a stop. Your phone would be completely unaffected as well.
@hugegamer5988 It's just like how long does it stay insulated the electricity if it hits your car like that?
