- Thanks to SteveW for this and the description below:
Saint & Greavsie was a popular ITV programme presented by ex-footballers Ian St. John and Jimmy Greaves which ran from 1985 to 1992. Previously the duo had presented "On the Ball" in the World of Sport show.
Although Greaves and St. John had been contemporaries in the 1960s football world, they had never played for the same club and were English and Scottish respectively. However, a bond was quickly struck up and a long-running partnership soon began. Greaves had only recently won his battle against alcoholism when he began co-presenting but he was forever cracking his unique brand of gags that would have the audience either laughing or crying. Jokes about Scottish goalkeepers were a particular favourite, in a bid to wind up straight man St John.
Jimmy Greaves was suffering with flu at the time of this broadcast and somebody had the brilliant idea of substituting him, not with another football pundit, but with his rubber puppet from the 'Spitting Image' programme.
This one is a real hoot, so funny that the production crew can be heard laughing in the background at times. It is also quite surreal in that, at times, Ian St.John discusses serious football isues with the 'puppet' and appears to have forgotten that it's not the real Jimmy Greaves.
The programme features reports on :
The re-unification of the German football team.
Peter Shilton's Testimonaial Match.
The 'Art' of celebrating a goal.
When is an own-goal not an own-goal?
Highlights and goals from matches played during the previous week :
Germany v Switzerland
Malta v Holland
Spain v Albania
Oldham v Plymouth
Portsmouth v Ipswich
Tranmere v Birmingham Спорт
One of the best theme tunes ever!!!
It's a funny old game!! Took me right back to the good old days. You'd watch it before going to a match!!!
Absolute brilliant, RIP Greavsie! You were a brilliant player and a brilliant pundit with Saint. A firm part of mine and many childhoods!
That Bassett Atkinson sketch was a classic. In fact the whole episode was. Loved Saint & Greavsie.
That report about a unified Germany was brilliant.
RIP Ian St John.
Thanks for the upload in 2012 - I remember this episode so well and it's mentioned in an obituary today.
Friday night favourites - it was always Tranmere rovers
RIP Saint 🙁 - This was a great episode, so funny... Great tribute to Saint... Hoping Greavsie is doing ok...
What an unbelievable talent van basten was
Miss these days proper football with decent presenters. Every boy would watch this with either your dad, grandad, brother etc..
I used to watch it with my grandad when I was a kid,i remember when greavsie would come on my grandad would start saying here he is pissy arse,i was kid so I didn't have a clue what he was talking about.
pleasure to see people speaking english in interviews rather than the dubbed or subtitled form that we are used to
The puppet's voice is provided by the legendary Peter Brackley, who's a comedian and impressionist during the increasing number of times when he's not commentating.
Saint & Greavsie emerged from the regular Saturday pre- match interviews Greavsie would do talking to Brian Moore from the Birmingham studio. He was hilarious & you could hear the production crew in fits of laughter every week. This was all some years before Soccer AM.
So gooooood, thanks for this
Great episode, don't remember it when it was originally shown.
RIP Peter Brackley. *Brighton born and bred.*
I had that football collection folder and all the stuff inside. Can’t remember much else about it though!!
Best football show ever
Great episode. Funny old gaaayme Saint !
I was at the Shilton game!
Klinnsman's interview was very telling. *we welcome them to our team* how is that a united country?
Chilly jocko land
I couldn't understand a word that Andy Townsend said ! His Irish accent too much!!
Those two were cut from a different class, the spitting image puppet was a naster stroke and can imagine Jimmy laughing at home watching it.
Halcyon days
😁😁
two Manchester United Managers in the ad break
The full spitting image show?
You'd never get the top players now messing about with the fans like wealan and townsend
Jurgen was crap at Penalties. When he came to us at White Hart Lane I watched him strike a penalty just as crap at David James - same outcome.
Fergie and Big Ron, wtf
Premier league ruined football.
