Thanks for this...I cannot get my ET12 into rescue mode...followed reset instructions and have solid magenta light...when I use rescue utility it reports that router is not in rescue mode..any ideas?

Same here. Magenta light, but always says not in recovery mode.

I found myself wondering if an alternative might be to factory reset the router and set up from scratch. Would that be ok?

Yes, factory reset would work fine. The Tool is used only if you have issues with the normal process via the Router.

Because it happend to me, be sure to disable any other connections on your PC like VirtualBox Host-Only Ethernet Adapter. I could not restore my Asus until I disabled that.

if you have a broken rt 56u , you can use the recovery tool (windows) from the ac 68u to restore the ax56u. sad that asus doesnt put the tool for the ax56u on the download page

No, if you have any other 3rd Party firmware it will just reset that version

You may have to reset it within the router again if the bands our missing and try updating to the latest firmware.
