  • I'm a dumb fool and bricked my ASUS Router, specifically a RT-N66U. In the video I use the ASUS Utility while the router is in recovery mode by holding the reset button while plugging/powering the router.
    Confirmed Supported Models:
    RT-AC66U
    RT-N65U
    RT-N66U
    RT-N16
    RT-N10U B
    RT-N12HP
    RT-N56U
    DSL-N55U

I do your tutorial 7 times... doesn't work, even when I wait 1 hour on my RT-AC66R. But after I do this steps, it WORKED! So I'll leave the URL here to help anyone wiki.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Asus_RT-AC68U#Original_Firmware_Install_Procedure . This ASUS way to routers' rescue mode is unbelievable insane. I always spent my hole day trying the resurrection. I already boxed it for years, one time it worked with DD-WRT, many times not... few times with original firmware, a lot of times not. But I had and try to use it since 2012, it almost 10 years and still better performance than a lot of cheap routers.

Thank you. Thank you. Thank youi!!! I bricked my RT-N66U over a year ago while trying to do a firmware change to DD-WRT. It was sitting in the box & forgotten until I came across it recently. On a whim, I Googled "bricked ASUS RT-N66U" & came across your tutorial. I followed your instructions to the letter & the router has been resurrected!!!
It took over 35 minutes to perform the "system recovery" (this is in addition to the ~20 minutes for the firmware upload) & then I got the "Failed to connect to router" message. I didn't freak out as the indicator bar did go to 100%. However, unlike in your tutorial, right after the "system recovery" completed, the power light on my router went out. But the connection indicator light was still on & steady. When the power light went on & the connection light & the Wi-Fi indicators started to blink after ~30 minutes, I figured it was time to check the router. Lo & behold, it was alive!
For those attempting this fix -- be patient. Let the router sit there for awhile after performing the steps indicated. YMMV.

You are correct. It will show fail at the end of the 100% recovery process. Just leave the router alone and it will reboot over the next few hours and it will have the new firmware loaded. This is a complete failure by ASUS for firmware recovery. He is right...you must be patient. Ignore the failure indicators at the end. It means nothing. Also the latest firmware by ASUS prevents loading Merlin or any prior version of the firmwares. Another major mistake by them.

same for me. i reckoned half an hour would of been plenty after restoration firmware software said 'wait for system to reboot' and figured it failed. so tried a few times and then gave up. but leave the thing and it will do a reboot eventually - it seems..

Did you wait long enough for the router to finish flashing? Like I mentioned in the video it can take up to 30-90min to complete flashing once it gets to 99/100%. If the light is still blinking on the device and it made it through the flash just WAIT until it goes solid. If not, there's not much I can say at that point.

THANK YOU TIMES 10000000000000. I looked up so many tutorials for how to flash my asus router, it didnt end up working and I semi-bricked my router. I looked up even more tutorials to try and fix that. I stumbled across your video and your instructions worked like a charm!!! 100% works! Now just need to reconfigure my WAN network on my slave router....

This is a great video! I bricked my RT-AC66R upon a failed dd-wrt install. Had to press WPS button + Reset for 5 seconds before turning on the unit to enter Recovery mode. Somehow the buttons get swapped or take on different roles. And be patient people!

Can’t believe this still works in 2018 but all your steps worked and I’m at the final stage where I have to wait for my asus to finish rebooting. I got questions tho. While rebooting is the power and line 1 supposed to flash still? I did the ping in cmd and I got a reply back but it says “192.168.1.2 destination host unreachable “ but the pinging with 192.168.1.1 32bytes of data.

    • @boypakat

I had a lot of luck with DD-WRT on the N66U. My new AC66U however seems to have issues with the 5Ghz band when on DD-WRT and since flashing it has been flaky on the wireless availability so I've been meaning to RMA it as I feel all the DD-WRT shit fucked with it.
